San Juan, Puerto Rico to expand cruise ship pier to make room for Quantum of the Seas

Puerto Rico's Governor announced plans to expand the cruise pier in Old San Juan to be able to handle cruise ships carrying 6,000 passengers.

The plan according to Alejandro Garcia Padilla will be able to accomodate Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas, which will visit San Juan in December 2014, with nine more visits scheduled for 2015.

The new pier expansion will cost $8.7 million and will extend the pier by 182 feet as well as build a new baggage inspection office.

Quantum of the Seas will be 167,000 tons and carry at least 4,180 passengers when she begins sailings in November 2014.

Quantum of the Seas godmother Kristin Chenoweth to star on Macy's Thanksgiving Parade float

Royal Caribbean announced today that its Quantum of the Seas godmother Kristin Chenoweth will be the center of attention onboard their parade float during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade this year.

Chenoweth is a Broadway and television star and is well known for her ability to sing.  It's unclear yet what Chenoweth will be doing besides waving to the crowd.  Many expect her to perform a song as part of the festivities, although this remains to be seen.

Chenoweth will appear on the parade float that Royal Caribbean is calling, "A World at Sea" that depicts three “WOW” moments found only on Royal Caribbean, including the cruise line’s signature FlowRider surf simulator, thrilling zip line and iconic rock climbing wall.

The 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs nationwide on NBC-TV on Thursday, November 28, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon in all time zones.

Royal Caribbean offers preview of Thanksgiving Day Parade float

Royal Caribbean revealed yesterday the design for its new parade float that will be a part of the 87th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

Royal Caribbean is calling its float "A World at Sea" and was designed by the creative artists of the Macy’s Parade Studio and will bring the cruise vacation experience to midtown Manhattan and beyond via three distinct postcard scenes which take place onboard a Royal Caribbean ship. The rotating scenes depict three “WOW” moments found only on Royal Caribbean, including the cruise line’s signature FlowRider surf simulator, thrilling zip line and iconic rock climbing wall.

The float will also be a big advertisement for Quantum of the Seas, the brand new cruise shop that will have its inaugural cruise in November 2014.  Royal caribbean is promising a "special, surprise performance" along with the float.

The 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs nationwide on NBC-TV on Thursday, November 28, 2013 from 9 a.m. to noon in all time zones.

Meyer Werft launches Quantum of the Seas web cam

Ship builder Meyer Werft has announced their web cam is up and running in Hall 6 to document the build process of Quantum of the Seas.

The web cam is available via the Meyer Werft web site, although it is worth noting the web cam is not a live cam, but rather a static photo that is updated periodically, usually once per week.

With the cam online, anyone can monitor the progress Quantum of the Seas makes as it is put together. The cam will be available until the ship work in dry dock is completed.

Royal Caribbean announces Dhani Jones will be celebrity sports and fitness expert for Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean announced that former NFL star and TV show host Dhani Jones will be the Sports and Fitness celebrity expert advisor for the brand new Quantum of the Seas cruise ship. 

Jones will be part of the Quantum Experience Advisors, a team of celebrity experts who will help shape the look, feel and offerings aboard the new Quantum class cruise ships Royal Caribbean is building.  Jones is the second advisor, following interior designer and HGTV-star Genevieve Gorder.

Jones has been working with Royal Caribbean's guest activities team in Miami, Florida since June 2013 to come up with new exciting activities for cruise ship guests. Jones has been lending his expertise on the latest active trends and providing fresh ideas for Quantum of the Seas' SeaPlex sports zone.  The SeaPlex will be the largest entertainment complex at sea.

Since starting with Royal Caribbean, Jones has taken a look at the existing Royal Caribbean programming for guests as well as the signature Royal Caribbean offerings.  He has come up with some new ideas for the Quantum-class ships and been lending his expertise on the latest active trends and providing fresh ideas for SeaPlex.

Dhani Jones is best known for being an 11-year veteran of the NFL and has since become a host on the Travel Channel's show Dhani Tackles the Globe, the self-proclaimed adventurer participated in many of the world's games. From Rugby to Sambo, Jones immersed himself in each culture and learned how athletes around the world compete in their favorite sports. Off the field, Jones is currently starring in a new show on FOX Sports 1, Jones and Mosley, and also is an author, entrepreneur and philanthropist, founding a company that sells high-end bow ties for various charities around the world.

"I'm having a phenomenal time working with Royal Caribbean as a Quantum Experience Advisor," said Jones. "It's giving me the opportunity to demonstrate my passion for sports, travel, fitness and adventure, and draw on my own experiences traveling the globe to contribute ideas that will bring good fitness and good fun to Quantum of the Seas."

Genvieve Gorder releases first Quantum of the Seas webisode

Royal Caribbean released the first video starring Quantum Experience Advisor Genvieve Gorder, detailing her work on the interior design of the brand new Quantum of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean announced a few weeks ago that Gorder was hand-selected to be the first celebrity expert designer that will work on creating the look for Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship that debuts in late 2014.

Quantum of the Seas cruise director will be Jimmy Rhodes

Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship that is under construction, Quantum of the Seas, has its cruise director picked and the lucky man is Jimmy Rhodes.  Rhodes has been a cruise director for Royal Caribbean for 10 years now.

As cruise director, Rhodes said he will head all entertainment for guests 18 and older. In doing so, Rhodes said he will manage a team of about 120 dancers, musicians, youth and activities staff.

While Rhodes may be the full time cruise director for Quantum of the Seas, there are other reports that Richard Spacey will be the cruise director for Quantum of the Seas during its first few cruises, with Rhodes assuming the duties afterwards.

Quantum of the Seas' inaugural cruise is set for November 14, 2014 from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
