Celebrity Ascent will be Celebrity Cruises' fourth Edge Class ship, and it is only a few short months away from hitting the high seas.

Celebrity-Ascent-Caribbean

“I am so excited to introduce the world to Celebrity Ascent and continue the legacy of Celebrity’s Edge Series,” remarked Laura Hodges Bethge, Celebrity Cruises’ President.

“First launched in 2018, the Edge Series transformed what cruising could be and its ships like Edge, Apex and Beyond quickly became consumer favorites. Continuously striving to offer travelers a better way to enjoy travel and reach the world around them, we are so proud of what we have built and look forward to welcoming both seasoned and new cruisers alike.”

Here is what guests can look forward to on the newest Edge Class ship, Celebrity Ascent.

Edge Class favorites

Celebrity-Ascent-Concept

If you have previously sailed on an Edge Class ship, there are numerous venues that you can look forward to seeing onboard.

First, there will be the Theatre that will be home to imaginative performances that utilize state-of-the-art technology.

If you would rather enjoy the outdoors, head up to the Rooftop Garden. Dubbed the "ultimate outdoor haven," this is a space to enjoy live music, movies, and infinity float pools. Do not worry-- if you get hungry, it is easy to grab something to eat al fresco at the Rooftop Garden Grill.

There will also be a return of the spa, luxurious Resort Deck with a large main pool and two-story martini glass shaped hot tubs, adults-only Solarium, Sunset Bar, Magic Carpet, and the Grand Plaza and Martini Bar.

When it comes to dining, you can expect to find venues like the three-story Eden Bar and Restaurant, as well as Le Petit Chef, which offers a fully immersive dining experience for an extra cost and will feature a never-before-seen show.

Infinite Verandah on Celebrity Edge

And when you return to your cabin at night, you can rest easy in Celebrity's luxurious and modern accommodations. When booking your cruise, you will have your pick of the Edge Class first Infinite Veranda, as well as other standard cabins. The ship even welcomes the return of AquaClass staterooms for wellbeing-seekers who want to enjoy exclusive amenities.

Brand-new and refreshed dining experiences

LeVoyage-MainDiningRoom

When Celebrity Beyond made her debut in 2022, she introduced new dining venues that set her apart from the previous two ships in the class. Likewise, Celebrity Ascent is taking on a similar tactic. Cruising onboard this ship will be different from any other ship in the class!

Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud was first introduced on Celebrity Beyond; however, it will be completely redesigned onboard Celebrity Ascent. Headed by KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group, Daniel Boulud's second restaurant at sea will offer an intimate fine dining experience that is based upon the Chef's travels.

The world-class cuisine offered at Eden Restaurant is going to be expanded with a plant-based tasting menu, which will bring guests closer to the earth through seven courses that are crafted with untouched, fresh, and seasonal ingredients.

Eden Celebrity

Fans of high-end bourbons will appreciate the tasting and seminars at Craft Social, while martini fans can rejoice in the expanded martini menu at the Martini Bar.

Here, you can find low-sugar cocktails, as well as some brand-new creations, such as the lychee and passion fruit martini.

Even the complimentary dining experience is getting a refresh. As with the other Edge Class ships, there will be four main dining options, each with a signature menu and rotating nightly dishes.

Cosmopolitan-1-Ascent

On Celebrity Ascent, however, the Cosmopolitan restaurant will be redesigned, with the inspiration coming from the culture of champagne.

Finally, Blu, the exclusive restaurant dedicated to AquaClass guests, will have an outdoor terrance with the ability to seat 24 guests.

Enhanced entertainment, art and retail offerings

Art-Gallery

While food is a major aspect of the cruising experience, entertainment is another selling point for many passengers, and there is no lack of things to do onboard Celebrity Ascent.

First, there will be three brand-new production shows in the Theater, as well as interactive digital experiences in the Club and immersive shows in Eden Bar and Restaurant. Each show will feature world-class dancers, vocalists, musicians, and even specialty artists.

Plus, the Resort Deck is going to be the center of all your nightlife needs. There will be live performances, music, and even a DJ.

Casino

For those who want to try their luck at the casino, you will find that the casino floor has been redesigned and will feature brand-new games. You will find a new layout, design, and slot machines with the latest technology.

The Art Gallery has also been reimagined, making it so that guests are able to better experience the displayed places, as well as enjoy various auctions and events.

Last but not least, Celebrity Ascent will be home to the Sunset Collection by Nate Berkus. This is a collection of travel and home accessories that can only be found onboard Celebrity Ascent!

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Celebrity Apex in Greece

Celebrity Ascent is scheduled to begin her maiden season in Caribbean before making her way across the Atlantic Ocean for a summer European season. This means that you can relax on the beautiful white sands of the Caribbean or enjoy a culturally rich trip, crossing multiple bucket-list destinations off of your list.

If you would like to be one of the first to sail onboard, you can book a preview sailing. The first departs on November 22, 2023 and is a 4-night cruise to Cozumel. The second is a 3-night Bahamas getaway to Nassau, departing from Fort Lauderdale on November 26, 2023.

Nassau buildings

The official maiden voyage is slated to begin on December 3, 2023. This is a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Puerto Plata.

Between mid-December 2023 and early April 2024, you can elect to cruise on one of two 7-night Caribbean itineraries: Bahamas, Mexico, and Grand Cayman or San Juan, Tortola, and St. Kitts.

Mediterranean cruise in Rome

Since she will be in the Caribbean over the holidays, perhaps you will enjoy ringing in the New Year onboard this brand-new ship. The Christmas cruise departs on December 24 and sails to the Bahamas, Mexico, and Grand Cayman, while the New Year's cruise is to San Juan, Tortola, and St. Kitts and leaves on December 31.

While in Europe, you can take the ultimate Mediterranean getaway during the 9-night Italian Riviera and France cruise. If that does not interest you, there is also a 12-night Best of Italy and Greece itinerary, sailing to places like Rome, Naples, Mykonos, and Santorini!

MrBeast, YouTube's most acclaimed entertainment star, boarded Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas for an afternoon of fun.

harmony-mr-beast-split-hero

MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has amassed 159 million subscribers and over 27,131,438,600 total views. In terms of popularity, only two YouTube channels have more subscribers, and both are brand channels: T-Series and Cocomelon.

In fact, he is the second YouTube creator in the site's history to surpass 100 million followers. Even his Instagram account is popular, with over 38 million followers.

In a recent video, he boarded Harmony of the Seas to see what the $1 billion ship has to offer and how it compares to other ships, including a boat that he paid a single dollar for.

Since published on June 10, the video has gotten over 71 million views!

Just how popular is MrBeast?

Mr-Beast-Kids-Choice-Awards-Stock

MrBeast is not just a content creator. He is also a philanthropist who has founded and co-founded numerous different organizations, included the Arbor Day Foundation, which has raised over $23 million dollars.

In terms of his viewership, about 112 million people watched the Super Bowl LVII. During the average month, MrBeast harbors roughly 41 million views.

Tim Kasser, a psychologist who studies materialism, conducted a study to prove that if MrBeast were to advertise for any given company or brand, it could cost about half as much as a traditional commercial while reaching a larger audience.

Mr-Beast-Harmony-3

As of June 2023, his most watched video is titled "$456,000 Squid Game in Real Life!" Since it was posted on November 24, 2021, the video has gained over 438 million views.

That, of course, is nowhere close to the most watched YouTube video of all time, Baby Shark Dance, which has been watched over 12 billion times in the six years since being posted to the social media site.

Harmony of the Seas

Harmony of the Seas

While not the largest cruise ship in the world, Harmony of the Seas currently ranks number third, following Symphony and Wonder of the Seas.

When Icon of the Seas launches in January 2024, her position will be bumped down to fourth.

The ship, which measures an astonishing 226,963 gross registered tons, was launched in 2016. Currently, she is sailing from Miami, Florida. In November, she will be repositioned to Galveston, Texas, where she will make 4, 6, 7, and 8-night Western Caribbean cruises through at least April 2025.

Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis Class ship, meaning that she is part of one of the most unique classes of ships in the world and is divided into seven different neighborhoods for guests to explore:

  • Royal Promenade
  • Central Park
  • Boardwalk
  • Pool and Sports Zone
  • Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center
  • Youth Zone
  • Entertainment Place

Likewise, she offers passengers numerous different dining -- both complimentary and specialty -- and entertainment options, such as the infamous AquaTheater performances, Wonderland, Izumi Hibachi and Sushi, and headliner acts in the Royal Theater.

Additionally, there are countless activities for guests to enjoy -- think water slides, FlowRider surf simulators, multi-story dry slide, mini-golf, a zip line, and more. It is easy to see why MrBeast wanted to check out this impressive ship.

In short, there is something for everyone onboard, and there is no possible way that you could be bored while on a Harmony of the Seas cruise.

MrBeast's maritime adventure

Mr-Beast-Harmony-of-the-Seas

MrBeast's YouTube video begins by showcasing yachts of various price points, including one that he paid $1 for.

According to the yacht's previous owner, the storage costs were racking up, and he was spending $18,000 per year to storage it. Shortly after the purchase was made, the ship began to sink! They jumped off the vessel moments before it was submerged under the water.

Mr-Beast-One-Dollar-Yacht

After the $1 yacht, he goes on to explore ships worth $1 million, $10 million, $25 million, $50 million, and $300 million dollars. The final ship on the agenda was Harmony of the Seas, which cost a little over $1 billion dollars to build!

"You cannot fathom how massive this ship is," said MrBeast, speaking about the size of Harmony.

"It is literally a floating city...This boat has waterslides, an indoor mall, a basketball court, and tons of other stuff I can't even name!"

Mr-Beast-Harmony-of-the-Seas-2

He and his friends break up to explore different neighborhoods, with Chandler and Nolan heading to the Pool and Sports Zone first.

After being amazed by the water slides and live music on the pool deck, the duo headed over to play a round of mini-golf.

Mr-Beast-Harmony

Next, Chris appears on the Boardwalk: "So I went down a slide [referring to the Ultimate Abyss], and now I'm teleported into like a different world. And you have a carousel?!"

Not only did he charter the ship for himself and his friends, but he ended the video by bringing 400 of his subscribers onboard to partake in the fun, whether that be hanging out on the pool deck, exploring the Boardwalk, playing games in the arcade, climbing the rock wall, eating at Wonderland, and more.

Mr-Beast-Harmony-2

Plus, every single subscriber onboard at the time was gifted with a free three-night cruise on Icon of the Seas.

If they all thought Harmony was impressive, they will be blown away by everything that the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas will offer, including the record-breaking Category 6 Water Park, AquaDome, brand-new dining concepts, and much, much more.

Things you'll notice when cruising on the newest cruise ship

In:
13 Jun 2023
By:
Matt Hochberg

I often say that it's hard to have a bad cruise on a new cruise ship, and a large reason for that thought process is because of how much you can see and do on a new cruise ship.

Wonder of the Seas pool deck

Royal Caribbean's fleet of cruise ships offers ships of different size and age. There's a good reason to try them all, with the newest ships offering some superb experiences that truly stand out.

Of course, a new cruise ship will come with a premium price.  The newest ships have the most demand because of how intriguing they are to the general public. It leaves some people wondering what exactly a new cruise ships gets you and why you'd want to pay extra to sail on a brand new Royal Caribbean cruise ship compared to one that isn't as new.

Regardless of a ship's age, Royal Caribbean does a good job of maintaining its fleet with regular updates and even upgrades to some vessels.

Odyssey of the Seas pool deck

The appeal of the latest and greatest certainly draws in plenty of cruisers, because it represents the very best Royal Caribbean has to offer. When you watch a commercial for Royal Caribbean, inevitably you want to do the same things you see in the commercial, and those are offered on newer ships.

If you've only sailed on older ships, or are simply curious what makes a new ship different from an older ship, there are a few nuances you will notice about a brand new cruise ship when you get onboard.

Updated cabin aesthetics

Connecting rooms

If you think all cruise ships are the same regardless of age, you have to see the cabin of a new ship.

New cruise ships have much more modern aesthetics, and I'd say the look and feel of a new ship cabin mirrors that of a land based hotel much more than older ships cabins.

Royal Caribbean ship cabins on ships built prior to 2014 seem to have a very traditional maritime look to them, and it seemed like the motif for these staterooms was very much the same whether you were on a Radiance or Voyager Class cruise ship.

Oceanview balcony cabin on Anthem of the Seas

With the Quantum Class, the look of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship cabin began to change, and since then, it seems Royal Caribbean hasn't been content with delivering the same sort of cabin.

The colors have evolved over the last 10 years, and there's more accents that make your cruise ship cabin look less like a cruise ship cabin.  In my opinion, new ship cabins evoke more of a land resort look to them than older ship cabins did.

Smart TVs

Something else you'll notice in your cabin on a new cruise ship are the televisions.

I certainly don't watch a lot of TV while on a cruise, but when I do, the experience is much more enjoyable on a new TV given the feature set and performance you'll get with them.

Newer Royal Caribbean ships have interactive TVs, where you can complete your muster drill experience, order room service, review charges and more.

Suite living room

On the very newest Royal Caribbean ships, the TVs have a means to stream content from your smart device.  This alleviates one of the major pain points guests have had for years of trying to get a movie from their computer or phone on the TV without having to bring an HDMI cable and universal remote.

Plus, the new TVs change channels a heck of a lot quicker.  My pet peeve is using a TV that has a noticeable delay in trying to change channels, which is common with older units.

While the stateroom television isn't a reason to book a cruise or not, it certainly makes it slightly more enjoyable.

More specialty restaurants

Mason Jar with kids

There's simply more dining choices on a new cruise ship.

Part of the reason you'll find more dining variety is because the ship is bigger, which means more space onboard for more restaurants.

Over the years, Royal Caribbean has doubled down on specialty dining in particular because of how well-received it has been from guests.  It offers more cuisines and cooking styles than you can find in the complimentary venues, and it allows Royal Caribbean to experiment with new concepts too.

Playmakers

For those that opt to indulge in extra cost restaurants, you'll have many more choices on a new ship than an older ship.

As an example, Icon of the Seas will have more than 40 food and beverage concepts, with 23 of them completely new to Royal Caribbean.

pier-7-icon-surfside

Whether you go to all of those restaurants is secondary to the fact you have the choice to visit, and the sheer variety stands out to guests.

When you sail on an older ship, the amount of dining choices is considerably less.

Newer songs in production shows

AquaTheater on Wonder of the Seas

If you want to tell which decade a cruise ship was launched, watch the production shows and listen for which songs are included.

When Royal Caribbean builds a new cruise ship, they develop new shows for guests onboard.  Inevitably, there are hit songs from the last few years included in the dance numbers.

When I went on Anthem of the Seas earlier this summer, I recall hearing Macklemore's, "Can't Hold Us" as part of a show in Two70.  It's a great hit from 2012, and it instantly sets the age of a ship in your mind.

Newer cruise ships seem to sample newer songs in their shows.

A lot of new cruisers

Bartender at Lime and Coconut

New cruise ships are built to bring in the crowds, especially those that have never cruised before.

Growth in the cruise industry is predicated on the concept of marketing to people that have never taken a cruise before because that is the largest segment of the population. According to statistics published by Cruise Lines International Association, around 15% of the total US population have ever cruised.

As a result, Royal Caribbean designs new cruise ships to be very intriguing to someone who has never cruised before, and the result is there will probably be a lot of new cruisers onboard.

To be fair, you'll find new cruisers on every Royal Caribbean cruise ship.  But there seems to be many more newbies on a new ship.

Certainly there will be many families on a new ship because of Royal Caribbean's historic appeal to the family travel market.

Those Royal Caribbean television commercials are made to attract the public to the ship, and often the whizz-bang activities onboard are the sort that compel someone who has never cruised before to try the ship. The Bionic Bar, Ultimate Abyss, and FlowRider all endear themselves to first time cruisers because they are the sort of activities someone might not have imagined you could do on a cruise ship.

More storage space in your cabin

Room

Going back to the rooms on a cruise ship, one big difference with a new ship is how much more storage space there is in your cabin.

When I started cruising, I found storage space to always be at a premium.  But with cruise ships built in the last decade, there has been many more drawers, closets, and nooks added to store all of your belongings.

Inside Plus

Instead of rationing shelves, I find even in inside cabins more shelving and drawers than we can possibly use.

This is especially helpful when cruising with kids, as the amount of stuff you have seems to grow exponentially.

Read more8 things you should know about your cruise ship cabin

The line's best musical acts

In terms of entertainment on a new cruise ship, the better acts tend to end up on the new ships.

When Royal Caribbean launches a new cruise ship, they will pluck the top rated bands and musicians to sail on the newest ship. This is largely based on guest feedback and reputation these performers have garnered over the years.

To be clear, all the musical acts across the fleet are talented, but the stagemanship the best acts have makes them stand out.

More app features

The Royal Caribbean app is now a must-use part of the cruise experience, and the feature set on a new ship is substantial.

The bottom row of the app has various things you can do in the app, and the newest ships in the fleet can do things like being able to open your stateroom door, augmented reality experiences, and even open your cabin curtains.

Whether you use all these features or not is another question, but it's nice to have them all as an option.

Better suite amenities

Royal Loft Suite

If you'd like to stay in a Royal Caribbean suite, you'll find the best suite perks on a new ship.

Royal Caribbean has two tiers of suite benefits, with its new ships offering Royal Suite Class amenities that are aimed at rivaling land resort suite benefits.

AquaTheater suite on Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Suite Class has three tiers: Sea Class, Sky Class, and Star Class. They are available only on Quantum, Oasis, and Icon Class ships.

Read moreGuide to Icon of the Seas cabins and suites

Not only are the benefits better on new ships, but the size and layout of suites are arguably superior too.

Ultimate Family Townhouse

Because of how lucrative the suite market is for the cruise line, Royal Caribbean has developed larger and more opulent suites that feature multi-deck layouts, in-suite slides, and private jacuzzis.

A suite on an older ship will still be a lovely experience, but when you try a suite on the newer ships, I think the variety of perks stands out more.

How to beat the crowds on your cruise ship

In:

By:
Matt Hochberg

No matter which Royal Caribbean cruise ship you sail on, there's going to be a few thousands other passengers onboard with you, but that doesn't mean the ship will be crowded all the time and everywhere.

Sail away crowd

In some cases, a crowd is a good thing. It's nice to have the energy of a crowd for a theater performance, during a sing-a-long in a bar, or as part of the sail away party.

Royal Caribbean designs its ships to distribute guests around so crowding doesn't become problematic.  This is through a combination of placing venues at different ends and decks of the ship, as well as scheduling competing events at the same time.

While these methods help reduce crowding, it's not going to feel like a private yacht or anything quite that empty.  That's to be expected to some degree on a mass market cruise line, but there's still a few ways to keep crowds to a minimum.

Crowd on pool

Depending on your cruising style, budget, and energy to seek out alternatives, you can enjoy a Royal Caribbean cruise without nearly as many crowds.

If your goal is to find ways to minimize crowds on your cruise, here are some strategies to side-step the crowds while enjoying your cruise.

Book a suite

Royal Loft suite on Icon

If you want to throw money at the problem, staying in a Royal Caribbean suite gives you certain privileges that can assist with avoiding crowds.

Your suite cabin is going to be substantially larger than a standard balcony room, and that gives you private space to enjoy every day. This is especially nice with your suite balcony, which is quite a bit larger than a regular balcony.

Another way staying in a suite can give you an uncrowded experience is access to suite-only areas, such as the suite lounge and suite sun deck.

Suite Sun Deck on Wonder of the Seas

The suite sun deck is a popular option, because it allows you to enjoy the bright sunny days at sea without having to compete as much for a lounger.

Having your own bar and lounge in the suite lounge really makes a difference too, especially since drinks are complimentary here in the evening.

Suite Sun Deck render on Icon of the Seas

Looking ahead to Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean has dedicated the most space ever for suite guests in an entire neighborhood.

Icon’s expanded Suite neighborhood will include a new Mediterranean restaurant in The Grove, a multideck outdoor area with a pool and hot tub, reserved for suite guests.

Suite Sun Deck render on Icon of the Seas

Of course, staying in a suite isn't a cheap option, and it may be out of the question for most people's budgets.  But if you can afford one, staying in a suite is one easy way to avoid crowds.

Seek chairs away from the pool

Chairs on Oasis of the Seas

If you want to enjoy time outdoors in a chair or lounger, there are usually lots of seating choices if you don't mind being away from the pool.

While the pool is a focal point for sea day activities, you'll find lots of seating choices on the outer decks if you venture further aft or forward from the middle of the deck.

Solarium loungers

What I love about getting a lounger away from the pool is it's quieter and a better chance of getting a lounge chair in the shade.

There are also chairs on the promenade deck that wraps around the outside of the ship on deck 4 or 5 (depending on the Royal Caribbean ship class).

Go indoors on sea days

Schooner Bar on Vision of the Seas

If you value a quiet day on a sea day, head indoors when everyone is outside at the pool.

During the day, the bars are open on sea days and you'd be surprised how uncrowded some of these venues can be in the morning and afternoon.

A bar indoors will be quieter and sparsely crowded because a lot of other guests want to be outdoors to enjoy the sun or activities. If your goal is to read a book, watch a movie, or chat, being in an indoor venue isn't a bad idea at all.

Plus, you'll still find activities held indoors to keep you busy.

Cruise in the shoulder season

Radiance of the Seas in Alaska

While Royal Caribbean ships rarely sail less than full capacity, picking a cruise during the shoulder season can feel less crowded, especially in the ports of call you visit.

The term "shoulder season" refers to the beginning and end of a cruise season when demand is less. Some examples of shoulder season are:

These times of the year are when demand is less because of weather or school schedules, and the result is (generally) lower prices and less demand.

Anthem of the Seas in Geiranger

While I don't think your cruise ship will be half empty by any means, one advantage of shoulder season cruising is fewer ships in port. That makes shore excursion touring far less crowded, especially in cities or at popular beaches.

Avoid Windjammer on embarkation day

When you board a Royal Caribbean cruise, the first place you may run into a crowd is at the ship's Windjammer buffet restaurant.

A lot of people boarding want to grab lunch before enjoying their first afternoon onboard and that can result in a busy lunch crowd.

Instead, get something to eat at another venue.

El Loco Fresh

Depending on your ship, there's usually a couple of alternatives you could choose from for an embarkation day lunch.

Park Cafe, El Loco Fresh, Cafe Promenade, or Sorrento's are all complimentary options you could enjoy a lunch at for no extra cost.

In addition, some specialty restaurants are open for lunch on the first day, such as Chop's Grille, Johnny Rockets, Playmaker's Sports Bar, or Giovanni's.

Check a past Cruise Compass to get a sense of restaurant choices and operating hours.

Book with a group and rent out a venue

Private ice skating

If you're sailing with a group of friends, you might be able to rent out a venue onboard.

Assuming you all booked with the same travel agent, Royal Caribbean's group department provides certain services, such as the ability to rent out a venue.

You could rent out a bar, specialty restaurant, water slide, or lounge. Depending on the size of your group, this might be something the equity generated by the group could cover partially or entirely in cost.

You'll need to have a group set up with Royal Caribbean's Groups department, but with some advanced planning, this can be a really fun way to enjoy certain venues of a ship without anyone else!

Do activities during dinner time

Learning to surf on Flowrider

Want to ride the water slides, climb the rocking wall, or try the Flowrider without any lines? Go during dinner time.

Royal Caribbean usually operates its signature activities into the late afternoon and early evening, and this is one of the best times to go without much of a wait because most other guests are either at dinner or preparing to go to dinner.

Once the clock hits 4pm or so, the pool and sports decks start to empty out considerably because everyone wants to go to dinner.

In the summer, there's plenty of day light in the early evening, and it's a great time to enjoy these venues that are otherwise super popular other times of the day.

Book a private shore excursion

I mentioned how shoulder season cruising can ensure a less crowded port day, but if you can't do a shoulder season cruise, another good option to avoid crowds is to book a private tour.

No matter which port you visit, there are bound to be private shore excursions you can book through third party operators.

A private tour means it's just for you and your group, so you don't have to worry about a crowded bus or waiting around for a large group to move.

Private Tour

Plus, your private tour will be more nimble than a large group, and that can allow you to get to and from hot spots in port before the larger crowds descend.

A private tour will cost more than a group tour, but if you value avoiding the crowd, a private tour is the way to go.

Icon of the Seas is coming together nicely, and we have a new photo update of the progress being made.

Under construction in Turku, Finland, Icon of the Seas is looking more and more like a cruise ship (instead of a construction site). If you're like me, you want to see every update possible of what's happening there.

More water slides have been installed, the siding of the ship has been better revealed, and the ship looks to be getting prepared for her upcoming sea trials.

Of all the cruise mistakes to avoid, booking a flight the same day your cruise departs is probably among the worst.

Travel delays could mean a cancelled or delayed flight, and if you miss your cruise embarkation window, there goes your entire vacation cost.

Planning a cruise on Wonder of the Seas? There are a few things you should know before you book a cruise on this mega ship.

Wonder of the Seas in Labadee

Wonder of the Seas is the newest ship in Royal Caribbean’s fleet of 26 vessels, and she is a popular choice for a Caribbean vacation. With eight distinct neighborhoods, mind-blowing entertainment, and an abundance of family-friendly activities, the ship makes an ideal vacation for those in search of a fun getaway.

Like any cruise ship, it’s helpful to do a little research ahead of time to avoid any surprises once onboard. Knowing what to expect when it comes to the ship’s size, activity offerings, dining choices, and entertainment will better help you plan your vacation.

Wonder of the Seas

Sure, you can board a ship having done no prior research, but it’s in your best interest to be at least a little prepared for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

If you’re hoping to book a cruise on Wonder of the Seas, here are six things to know.

Wonder of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world, and she sails 7-night Caribbean cruises from Florida

Wonder of the Seas in Port Canaveral

Wonder of the Seas is currently the world’s biggest cruise ship.

What does it mean to be the world’s largest cruise ship? Here are a few stats:

  • Wonder of the Seas weighs 235,600 gross tons
  • She is 1,188 feet long and 215 feet wide (362 meters long and 65 meters wide)
  • Her total guest capacity is 7,084 and she has 2,867 cabins
  • There are 18 decks on Wonder of the Seas, 16 of which are accessible to passengers

Because of her size, Wonder of the Seas is among Royal Caribbean's most family-friendly ships. She features activities like a zip line, laser tag, waterslides, mini golf, a surfing simulator, and rock climbing wall.

Family playing mini golf

Outside of these thrills are activities including karaoke, live music, production shows, trivia, and comedians. On the world’s biggest cruise ship, there are endless ways to spend your day, leaving no passenger feeling bored.

Wonder of the Seas currently sails from Port Canaveral, Florida. She offers primarily 7-night roundtrip itineraries visiting either the Western or Eastern Caribbean, with port stops including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Wonder of the Seas has several design differences compared to her four sister ships in the Oasis Class

Perfect Storm waterslides on Wonder of the Seas

If you have sailed on other Oasis Class ships before, such as Harmony of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, you’ll notice a few design differences with Wonder of the Seas.

Most of the layout and activity offerings on Wonder of the Seas are the same as other ships in the Oasis Class. The ship still features an outdoor Boardwalk neighborhood with a carousel and AquaTheater, a Central Park with live plants, and a spacious Royal Promenade with shopping, restaurants, and lounges.

Despite similarities, Wonder of the Seas is not a carbon copy of her Oasis Class sisters.

On the sports deck, you’ll find just one FlowRider surf simulator instead of two. In its place is the Wonder Playscape, an underwater-themed playground for young children with small slides, climbing nets, and playground games.

Playscape on Wonder of the Seas

Additionally, a new bar called The Vue replaced what would be a second cantilevered hot tub on the pool deck. This bar is one of the best places onboard to watch sailaway, as it jets off the side of the ship offering sweeping views both day and night.

Speaking of the pool deck, the Wonder of the Seas pool deck has a revamped layout compared to other Oasis Class ships. Not only does the pool deck have a Caribbean resort-style theme, but it features private casitas, a Lime and Coconut Bar, and the largest TV screen on any Royal Caribbean ship.

The pool deck’s adults-only Solarium is fully indoors, another difference from other Oasis Class ships, allowing for more climate control compared to the usual open-air spaces.

Most differences on Wonder of the Seas are positive, and they won’t make an impact on your overall cruise experience. If you’re a hardcore FlowRider surfer, though, it might be best to book a ship with two FlowRiders for more surfing time.

The Mason Jar, Royal Caribbean’s signature southern cuisine restaurant, is only available on Wonder of the Seas and you should try it

Some restaurants on Royal Caribbean are found on nearly all ships, such as Chops Grille and Izumi. Others, however, are found on only a few ships in the fleet.

One such restaurant—found only on Wonder of the Seas—is The Mason Jar. In comparison to the international cuisines typically found at Royal Caribbean’s specialty restaurants, The Mason Jar’s menu is curated from dishes from around the American South.

Related: The Mason Jar Southern Food Restaurant Review on Wonder of the Seas

Open for brunch and dinner, you’ll find everything from chicken and waffles to red velvet pancakes, blackened cajun catfish, and chicken pot pie on the menu. The unique offerings, inspired by dishes from Louisiana to Kentucky and beyond, are unlike any dishes you’ll find elsewhere onboard.

Fried Chicken at Mason Jar

Many passengers on Wonder of the Seas do not dine at southern cuisine restaurants often at home, making it a special occasion when on the ship.

In addition to the restaurant itself is The Mason Jar Bar, which serves up southern-inspired cocktails like a PB&J Old Fashioned and Mississippi Moonlight. Small bites are also available to order from the bar without dining in the restaurant, including crab beignets and a crispy chicken sandwich.

A southern band plays country tunes most evenings of the cruise as well, and the bar is among the most popular places for a late-night hangout onboard.

Couple at Mason Jar

The Mason Jar is a specialty restaurant, meaning it comes with an extra cost on top of your cruise fare. Brunch has a cover charge of $24.99 and dinner will set passengers back $39.99. Small appetizers and sandwiches ordered at the bar range from $3-9 each.

If you’re staying in a suite, it doesn’t get better than Wonder of the Seas

Couple with drinks on Suite Deck

Of all ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, Wonder of the Seas offers the most impressive suites-only areas.

Oasis Class cruise ships have seven neighborhoods, all of which have a different theme and are designed to spread out crowds around the ship. Neighborhoods include Central Park, where guests can relax among nature, and Entertainment Place, home to theaters and live performances each evening.

Related: Wonder of the Seas neighborhoods tour

On Wonder of the Seas, however, there are eight neighborhoods, the eighth of which is the Suite Neighborhood. In the past, ships had a few suites-only areas scattered around the ship, including a Suite Lounge and Suite Sun Deck.

Suite Sun Deck on Wonder of the Seas

With Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean wanted to put all suites-only areas in one place, thus creating the Suite Neighborhood. In the Suite Neighborhood you’ll find a Suite Lounge, Coastal Kitchen suites-only restaurant, and expansive Suite Sun Deck with a private plunge pool, bar, and comfy loungers.

Wonder of the Seas’ Suite Neighborhood is the closest you’ll get to a “ship within a ship” concept on Royal Caribbean, and it’s truly a luxurious enclave on an otherwise busy cruise ship.

Wonder of the Seas does not have a Broadway show, but there’s no shortage of entertainment

AquaTheater show on Wonder of the Seas

Several of Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ships, including the first four ships in the Oasis Class, feature a Broadway show in the theater. Whether Mamma Mia, Cats, Hairspray, or Grease, watching a Broadway show is a favorite activity among cruise fans.

If you enjoy attending Broadway shows on Royal Caribbean, you may be surprised to find out that Wonder of the Seas does not have a Broadway show. Instead, the ship features original productions in the theater, ice-skating rink, and AquaTheater.

Luckily, the lack of a Broadway show does not mean there’s not quality entertainment onboard. In fact, we’d argue Wonder of the Seas has the best productions in Royal Caribbean’s fleet. Broadway show or not, you should make a point to see as many shows as possible during your week on the ship.

In the AquaTheater you’ll find InTENse. As the name implies, this show features an intense performance of high diving, slack lining, tightroping, acrobatics, and synchronized swimming by an all-female cast.

The ice-skating rink, Studio B, is home to the production of 365: The Seasons on Ice, which transports guests to all four seasons through technology-driven set design and professional performers. You’ll almost certainly be amazed watching the cast perform backflips, triple axels, and aerial performances on ice!

In The Royal Theater you’ll find the original production of The Effectors II: Crash n’ Burn, telling the story of a band of superheroes fighting their arch-nemesis, Crash. Although the storyline might sound cheesy, the combination of technology, drones, singing, and dancing makes this show a must-see while onboard.

Aside from these three main shows are smaller production shows and live music around the ship. Despite the lack of a Broadway show, there is more than enough entertainment to enjoy on Wonder of the Seas—it will be practically impossible to see it all in just one week.

The Windjammer on Wonder of the Seas is the biggest in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, but there are plenty of other options

One complaint you’ll often hear about Oasis Class ships is that the Windjammer buffet is too small, but this isn’t the case on Wonder of the Seas.

When Royal Caribbean designed the Oasis Class, they designed the ships with a wide selection of complimentary dining venues such as El Loco Fresh, Solarium Bistro, and Park Cafe. In theory, the cruise line thought that increasing the amount of dining venues would decrease the amount of guests eating at the buffet.

Related: Guide to Royal Caribbean’s Windjammer Cafe buffet

As a result, they designed the Windjammer on Oasis Class ships to be smaller than what would usually be expected for such a large vessel. What they later realized, however, was that guests still wanted to dine at the buffet despite the other options available.

Taking customer feedback into consideration, Royal Caribbean designed the Windjammer on Wonder of the Seas to be the largest buffet in the fleet. The Windjammer wraps around the entirety of the aft of deck 15 and is better suited to the amount of passengers onboard.

If you’re a Windjammer fan, you’re sure to find the buffet on Wonder of the Seas to be less crowded and chaotic compared to other Oasis Class ships.

Not a buffet fan? The good news is that, like other Oasis Class ships, there are many dining options available that are included in your cruise fare. Outside of the Windjammer, guests can dine at the following venues:

  • Main Dining Room
  • Solarium Bistro
  • Park Cafe
  • Cafe Promenade
  • Sorrento’s Pizza
  • Boardwalk Dog House
  • El Loco Fresh
  • Vitality Cafe
  • Coastal Kitchen (suites only)
  • Room service (continental breakfast only)
  • Johnny Rockets (breakfast only)

7 most important crew members to meet on your cruise ship

In:
08 Jun 2023
By:
Matt Hochberg

You'll meet lots of crew members on your cruise ship vacation, but there are a handful that are the most important to seek out.

Important crew members to meet

The crew are so important because they can really enhance your cruise experience. Most guests have a great cruise regardless of which crew members they interact with, but if I've learned something over all my cruises, it's there are a few crew members that can greatly enhance it.

Read more25 times Royal Caribbean crew members wowed cruise ship passengers with excellent service

That isn't to say if you don't meet these crew members you'll be at any kind of a disadvantage.  Rather, think of it like ice cream toppings: they make what is otherwise really good even better.

The next time you're on a cruise, see if you can find these crew members to at least say hello to and put a face to the name. Some may make a big difference, while others may simply be a good resource to be aware of, should the need arise.

Stateroom attendant

Inside cabin on Symphony of the Seas

It may seem obvious and obligatory that your stateroom attendant is on this list, but some cruisers don't really interact with their attendants and that's to their detriment.

Your stateroom attendant takes care of your cruise ship cabin every day of your cruise. She or he will visit it once per day to fresh up the room, and they're probably the crew member you'll see the most.

symphony-bathroom-interior-cabin

I recommend meeting your cabin attendant on the first day of the cruise so they can be aware of any special requests you may have, such as:

  • Extra towels
  • Splitting or combining the bed
  • Providing ice in the cabin
  • Laundry services

They're also the person to get a hold of if there's a maintenance issue with your cabin.

Over my years of cruising, I think the cabin attendant has had the most direct impact on my experience. From making towel animals that impress us, to transforming our kids' mess into organized order, cabin attendants have stood out for how helpful they can be on nearly every cruise.

Hotel Director

Royal Promenade on Adventure of the Seas

It took me years to fully appreciate what the hotel director does, and how they can impact your cruise.

The hotel director is in charge of the hotel operations of the cruise ship.  If you think of your ship has a floating resort, there's the hotel operations, marine operations, and food and beverage. A cruise ship hotel director is in charge of all aspects of the hotel-type operations, including everything related to your cabin and housekeeping.

While you want to start off with your stateroom attendant for nearly every issue, if a problem lingers or the resolution is not up to your liking, be sure to reach out to the hotel director.

You can always call down to Guest Services to get the extension of the hotel director and quickly get in touch with him or her.

Suite Concierge

Radiance of the Seas concierge lounge

If you booked a suite (Grand Suite or above), one of the best Royal Caribbean suite perks are the services provided by the suite concierge.

It is the job of the suite concierge to make sure everything is going well, and they are the problem solver for suite guests.

Part guest relations, part dining guide, and part event coordinator, the concierge is empowered to do a lot, especially when problems arise.

In a lot of cases, the concierge may have inside information on changes occurring onboard and know exactly who to reach out to about most situations.

The suite concierge will have regular hours they are available in the Suite Lounge, so be sure to stop in and say hello on the first day to not only meet them, but get a copy of their schedule.

Lead bartender in your favorite bar

Imagine this: You find yourself gravitating towards a certain bar for one reason or another. Maybe it's the live music, maybe it's the menu, or perhaps the atmosphere.  Whatever the rationale, you find yourself spending more time in one bar over another.

Look for a bartender who has a uniform that looks different from everyone else, and that's probably the lead bartender. And if you can't spot them, ask one of your other bartenders for whom it is.

The lead bartender has enough experience to catapult them up above the other bartenders, and these are great mixologists as well as crew members to get to know.

In my experience, the longer a crew member has worked for Royal Caribbean, the more "tricks of the trade" they seem to posses, and that's an asset to you. They can mix drinks better, might know cocktails not listed on the menu that you might want to try, and have enough stories to pass the time when the bar is slow.

Cruise Director

Marc Walker on Royal Promenade

Every cruise director has their own style, but you'd be surprised how helpful a cruise director can be to your sailing.

They're not only the emcee for all the activities onboard, they can also help with other things to do.

One of my favorite TikTok cruise ship hacks I learned about a cruise is to ask the cruise director for an activity you might not see on the schedule.

You can ask the cruise director to add events to the calendar if there's something you think is missing.

An example was when a guest wanted more outdoor deck parties on a recent sailing instead of the one they had on the schedule.  They ended up adding one every day of the cruise as a result of the request.

Casino host

Casino host

Not everyone gambles, but if you do, be sure to meet the casino host.

The casino host is more than a friendly smile. They are there to answer any and all casino questions you might have.

Royal Caribbean's Casino Royale program is complicated, but there are some seriously good benefits if you can get status with them.

Don't hesitate to stop by the casino host's desk and ask for more information on how the casino loyalty program works, how to play a new game, or what your progress looks like so far.

Read moreI gambled enough in Royal Caribbean's casino to get free drinks and a cruise

Loyalty Ambassador

I get asked many questions about Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor Society perks, and the best person to solve these quandaries is the loyalty ambassador.

This crew member's job is to look after every single member of Royal Caribbean's loyalty program, and you'd be surprised how much they can fix for you.

Explaining benefits, changing your preferences, answering frequently asked questions, the loyalty ambassador is the person to meet for these types of issues.

The biggest problem is locating the loyalty ambassador. On some ships, it seems their office is hidden around the ship.  But once you find them, they are a terrific crew member to know.

Take a look inside a cruise ship captain's living quarters

In:

Elizabeth Wright

We have all seen the videos of how crew members live onboard cruise ships. They live in tight quarters and often have to share a room with another member in their department.

Captain Kate shows what her cabin looks like

Cruise ships captains, however, live a little bit more luxuriously. A captain oversees all onboard operations to ensure that the ship is safely operating during each and every sailing-- it is not an easy job!

While captain of Celebrity Edge, Captain Kate McCue posted a TikTok showing what her living quarters looked like. The video, which was published in August 2020, has amassed over one million likes!

Keep reading to see Captain McCue's living quarters while captain of Celebrity Edge!

Who is Captain Kate McCue?

Captain Kate at the helm

Captain McCue made history as the first American woman to be named captain of a mega cruise ship. In 2015, she became the commanding officer of Celebrity Summit at only 37-years-old.

During her time at California State University, she landed an internship with Chiquita Brands International, where she worked on one of their cargo ships and helped to transport bananas between Ecuador and Los Angeles.

After graduating with her degree in business administration, she moved to Hawaii and worked as a general deckhand on a catamaran. When Captain McCue began to apply for positions with cruise lines, it took her nine months to be offered an entry-level third mate role by Disney Cruise Line.

In 2003, she moved to Royal Caribbean after being offered the role of second officer, and only one year later, she was promoted to first officer.

Her dream was to take command of a vessel one day. In order to accomplish this goal, Captain McCue knew that she needed to further her education, and in 2009, she earned her Chief Mate and Master's License from the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies

By 2011, she was working as a staff captain for Royal Caribbean. This position is second-in-command!

Celebrity Cruises asked Captain McCue to consider applying for a captain’s position in 2015, and she accepted the job of commanding officer for Celebrity Summit, making her the first first female commanding officer of a mega ship in the United States.

As of June 2023, she is captain of Celebrity Beyond, the cruise line's newest ship that is sister to Celebrity Edge. For those interested in following along on her journey as a cruise ship captain, you can subscribe to one of her social media platforms. On TikTok, for instance, she has around 3.5 million followers on TikTok, as well as a total of 8.6 million likes!

What does the main living space look like?

kate-mccue-living-space-celebrity-edge

"Welcome to my humble abode also known as the Captain's Quarters!" says Captain McCue as she began the video and opened the door to her cabin.

There is no shortage of natural light in this stateroom thanks to the amount of windows and infinite veranda.

Immediately, viewers get a sense of how important Bug Naked, an elf sphynx cat that lives with Captain McCue onboard the ship, is to her! You see a plush bed directly under the infinite veranda, perfect for Bug.

captain-kate-living-quarters-edge

The room is furnished with a large couch and coffee table, media console, and television. As she continues on with the video, she shows a framed picture of Saint Nicholas on one of the built in shelves.

captain-kate-mccue-patron-saint

"Because we're superstitious," she says, "there's somebody we never travel without; this is our patron saint of seafarers, Saint Nicholas."

What do the bedroom and bathroom look like?

captain-kate-bedroom-celebrity-edge

Overall, the bedroom feels pretty standard for Celebrity Cruises. She shows a king sized bed, night stands, and another television. As soon as she walks into the bathroom, however, you realize that this is no ordinary stateroom.

captain-kate-mccue-bathroom-celebrity-edge

There is a double sink, rain shower, and even soaking tub, which is great for Bug! The bathroom even connects directly to the primary entry hallway, as well as the bedroom.

Let's take a look at the main galley and office

captain-mccue-main-galley-celebrity-edge

Directly across from the bathroom is the main galley, and yes, there is another television in here! It is also home to Bug's litter box and stroller.

Despite not having a fully equipped kitchen, Captain McCue's Captain's Quarters does have a full-sized refrigerator that is stocked with water and Bug's cat food. Likewise, the drawers of the galley are packed with snacks, such as gummy bear and candy bars. Plus, there is a large table that is able to seat six guests.

captain-mccue-office-celebrity-edge

Connected to the main galley is Captain McCue's office, which in turn is connected directly to the ship's Bridge.

The Bridge is where the ship is commanded, and it is located at the forward of the ship. This is where the captain and other crew members carry out navigational duties.

"We have a minimum of three very qualified and licensed officers manning the bridge at all times," said McCue.

"Three different teams rotate every four hours on and eight hours off....[and] the teams are made up of an officer of the watch, assistant officer of the watch and a quartermaster look out."

How do other crew members live?

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour

Kristine Kugler is currently a dancer onboard Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas, and she posted a video to her YouTube channel in March 2023 showing what her living situation is like. While Captain McCue has her own stateroom, Kugler shares a stateroom with another crew member.

Depending on the crew member's position onboard, they, too, might be able to have their own cabin, albeit not as luxurious as Captain McCue's.

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour-2

Kugler shows a bunk bed, large television, drawers purchased from Amazon for additional storage, closer, and foldable table.

While the room itself is in no way a spacious suite, Kugler provides the most commentary about the size of the bathroom. "The first time we stepped into these bathrooms, it was definitely a culture shock," she said.

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour-3

"Because it's a lot tinier than really anything we're used to, and we have to share it with another person."

At the end of the day, the stateroom that a crew member is assigned to is based on their position. Since Captain McCue is the ship's highest responsible officer with decades worth of experience, she has earned the right to one of, if not, the best possible accommodations onboard.

If you are interested in learning more about Captain McCue, check out her social media pages! She has a TikTok and Instagram and posts content regarding operational duties onboard and ports of call.

The costly cruising mistake newbies make planning their first cruise

In:
07 Jun 2023
By:
Matt Hochberg

It's one thing to make a mistake on your cruise, but it's quite another if that mistake ends up costing you a lot of money too.

Liberty of the Seas sailing away from Port Everglades

No one wants to make a mistake, but a costly mistake hurts much worse than a mistake that is simply a lesson learned.

On a cruise in 2019, I booked a last-minute hotel in Nassau, Bahamas because I thought it was a great rate at the popular Baha Mar resort.  It turned out to be a very similarly named hotel nearby, and without access to the incredible resort I thought I was going to.  Since it was non-refundable, I wasted a lot of money on that mistake.

While that mistake hurt my wallet, there are worse mistakes a new cruiser could make, such as putting their entire cruise vacation investment in jeopardy.

Oasis of the Seas turning basin

That got me thinking about the absolute worst mistake someone could make that would cost them the most money if they did it.

I wanted to narrow down the options to something someone could choose to do and think it was a good idea, as opposed to something more subjective. Certainly a Royal Caribbean drink package you never order any drinks for would be costly, but that depends on the person.

In considering the costliest cruise mistake possible, it would have to be something that puts your entire vacation cost at risk.

Booking a flight the same day the cruise ship departs

Fort Lauderdale airport

In considering the possible negative financial ramifications along with the probability of it happening, it's clear to me booking your flight the same day your cruise is set to begin is arguably the costliest mistake.

For a land vacation, anyone would book a flight for to arrive in the city they'll be staying in on the same day of their first night of their hotel stay.  That makes perfect logical sense for a land trip, but it's counterintuitive for a cruise vacation.

Essentially, you're playing with fire by relying on your flight to be on time and not impacted by the typical delays and cancellations the air travel industry encounters often.

Cancelled flights

Having a tight schedule of landing, collecting your luggage, and then getting to the port leaves little wiggle room for any kind of delay.

Flight delays or cancellations, bad weather near your house, car breakdowns and a variety of other unforeseen possibilities can wreak havoc on your schedule.

The embarkation window on the first day of your cruise is limited, and if you arrive too late, you'll miss your cruise and there's no refunds for a no-show.

That means your entire cruise fare will be lost.

Mariner of the Seas sailing away

Not only can you not board a cruise ship late, the cut-off time for embarkation is actually a lot earlier than the sail-away time.

Even if you book an early flight, there's no guarantee that flight wont encounter a problem that results in getting you to your destination too late to make the ship.

Royal Caribbean (nor any cruise line) will not refund your money if you miss the cruise due to a travel delay.  Trip insurance might pick up some of the tab, but it will not allow you to actually go on the cruise vacation you planned and dreamed about.

Airplane in airport

The way to guard against this problem is to book a flight that gets you to your embarkation city at least one day before your cruise sets sail.

By flying in a day early, if your flight is delayed or cancelled, you have another day to make a flight, and the chances of a catastrophic delay happening twice in a row is unlikely.

In addition, flying in early means significantly less stress for everyone. The last thing you want to do is start your vacation worrying every minute until you arrive in your embarkation port that a travel delay could appear. Just the lingering thought of a delay is enough to make your vacation anything but relaxing.

What if I book my flights with the cruise line?

You might think by booking your flight with Royal Caribbean's Air2Sea program, you'll be safe if your flight is delayed because the ship will wait for anyone that booked flights with the cruise line.

This is actually a misconception, because even if you arrive late on a flight booked through the cruise line, the ship still will sail without you.

JFK airport

Instead, Royal Caribbean will assist in getting to the ship at another port. That doesn't account for the time you miss onboard the ship.

"The Emergency Travel team will work with you to find alternative flights. In some instances, same day viable flight options may not be available, and in those instances we accommodate you to the next available port where you may legally join the ship."

Note the word "legally" in the Air2Sea policy, because you may not be allowed to join the ship in the next port.

Jewel of the Seas in Portland

The United States (and other countries) have cabotage laws that prevent foreign-flagged ships to pick up and drop off passengers in any port.

Foreign flagged cruise ships (which are all of Royal Caribbean's ships) are required to make a stop in a foreign port when sailing roundtrip from the United States.

The law is part of the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA) of 1886 is to protect the U.S. Merchant Marine (the licensed (officers) and documented (trades) personnel on the ships) and to protect U.S. shipyards that both build and repair the ships.

In layman's terms, this means Royal Caribbean cannot let you join a ship at a U.S. port if you later will be disembarking at a different U.S. port unless a visit to a distant port such as Aruba is on the itinerary.

Who to call if you have a problem getting to the ship on embarkation day?

Cruise ship docked in Miami

Royal Caribbean has a phone number for emergencies on the day you are set to cruise.

If your travel plans are disrupted and you're unable to make the cruise, you can call Royal Caribbean's Day of Sailing helpline at 800-256-6649 or 305-539-4107 (Int'l).

50 Best Celebrity Cruises Tips & Tricks (2024)

In:
07 Jun 2023
By:
Chantal McPhee

If you're looking for an elevated cruise experience, Celebrity Cruises is known for providing guests with a memorable cruise vacation that comes with a plussed atmosphere.

Celebrity Edge

Whether it's your first Celebrity cruise or you want to learn more about the cruise line, we have assembled some of the best tips and tricks to make the most of your cruise vacation.

Advice on saving money, when is the best time to book packages and excursions, and can't miss events and activities are all critical to know.

Here are our top 50 tips and tricks to help you have a fantastic Celebrity cruise.

1. Save money on drinks

Celebrity drinks

Drinks can be an expensive add-on to a cruise vacation. Depending on what and how much you drink, a package may be the way to go. Celebrity offers both a classic and premium alcohol package as well as non-alcoholic options. Details are listed on your cruise planner, and it's cheaper to snag a pre-cruise deal rather than waiting until once you are onboard to purchase them.

Another way to save money is to bring your own wine onboard. Guests of the drinking age are allowed to bring one 750 ml bottle of wine per person but no spirits or beer.  Do note that alcoholic beverages purchased from onboard shops or in ports of call will be secured by ship until the end of the vacation.

2. Watch for deals

Celebrity sale

Celebrity offers a quality cruise experience, and its prices often reflect that. While not the most expensive in the marketplace, it can run slightly higher than some other companies, such as Royal Caribbean.

Good news though, the cruise line offers numerous promotions throughout the year. A frequent deal is 75% off the second guest, along with additional onboard credit. Watch out for other discounts that include basic wi-fi and the classic drink package. Make sure to sign up on their website to get up-to-date offers. Also, working with a good travel agent can help you understand what is available.

3. Book packages and excursions early

Celebrity excursion

Celebrity offers a number of pre-cruise deals, such as internet packages, shore excursions, dining, and spa treatments. Not only does advance purchasing get you a better deal, but it can also help avoid the disappointment of a sold-out excursion. If something is no longer offered, there are no guarantees that space will open up. It is far better to book something in advance and then cancel it later.

Booking early even applies to the cruise itself. Cruise prices have been trending upward, so don't expect last-minute deals. Celebrity does offer its “Best Price Guarantee so that if a lower cruise fare is found, guests may apply for the savings, which offers some peace of mind. In the event of a price drop, contact the cruise line directly (or through a travel agent) to see what you are entitled to in terms of savings (some conditions apply).

4. Leverage your Royal Caribbean Crown and Anchor status

Crown&anchor

Celebrity has its own loyalty program called Captain's Club, which has six tiers offering varying perks to repeat cruisers. The cruise line has a reciprocity agreement with Royal Caribbean due to their common ownership.

What does this mean for new cruisers? You can qualify for loyalty perks even before your first Celebrity cruise (Although you can’t combine points among the different brands). Cruisers with established status with Royal Caribbean are asked to contact the Captain's Club to ensure they are promoted to the equivalent tier prior to sailing.

5. Know what’s included in your cruise fare

Celebrity fares

There are two main fare options when booking a Celebrity cruise. The basic fare is called the cruise-only rate, which is their lowest fare and is available for inside, oceanview, veranda, and concierge-level staterooms. This is the standard cruise offering dining, entertainment, and daily activities.

The “all included” option includes the Classic Drink Package and Basic Wi-Fi, which can be significant savings if guests plan to purchase packages anyway.

In addition to this, the cruise line offers AquaClass, which has special access to Blu, a private restaurant, the thermal suite, and complimentary fitness classes. You do not have to purchase the all-inclusive package, though. You are able to stay in an AquaClass room with a base fare.

One above this is the Retreat, which is the most all-inclusive option with premium drink and wi-fi packages, private dining, sundeck, and lounge, as well as concierge and butler service.

6. Use a good travel agent

travel agent

serif">Clearly, Celebrity has a lot of options, different fares, cabin alternatives, and lots of onboard experiences to choose from. Using a good travel agent can be a great way to navigate all these choices and make sure you get the best price possible.

Often the best way to get a travel agent is to get a recommendation from a friend or family. They should be familiar with Celebrity and have booked/ sailed with them before. Travel agents are paid through the cruise line, so there is no additional cost for cruisers, and they can save you both time and money by finding the best deal, as well as managing any issues that come up.

7. Kids are welcome on Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity kids

Celebrity may not be known as a family cruise line, but it does welcome passengers of all ages. The cruise line provides numerous complimentary programs, family-friendly excursions, and pint-sized menus to make cruising easier and more fun for families.

They also offer free kids and teen programs in a dedicated, supervised environment. Camp at Sea features sports, arts and crafts, theme parties, treasure hunts, and much more. Teens can hang out with friends in their own spaces, play in video game competitions, dance, and enjoy sports. They can even take culinary classes.

 8. Maximize loyalty points

Power up points

Make sure to sign up for Celebrity’s loyalty program, called Captain’s Club, which awards points based on the length of sailing and stateroom category. Even when you aren’t sailing, there is the opportunity to earn more points. Celebrity’s Power Up points give guests a chance to earn extra points by watching videos, taking surveys, or engaging in social media activities. Power Up points are converted at a ratio of 10 Power Up points to 1 Club point.

The activities are easy to complete and informative. The recent promotion in May (worth 30 points) asked loyalty members to watch a video that features Celebrity captains as they discussed how the Edge series of ships continue to revolutionize the industry.

9. No smoking in the casinos

Celebrity casino

Celebrity’s onboard casinos provide passengers with various slots and table games, including blackjack, poker, craps, baccarat, and roulette. The cruise line offers casino guests Blue Chip Club Rewards, which has concierge service, beverage perks, free play, and much more.

It may be a surprise to many, though, to find out that Celebrity Cruises has a no-smoking policy when it comes to their casinos. This may be welcome news to some or an unexpected disappointment for others. The cruise line cites the health and comfort of guests as the rationale for this rule.

The no-smoking policy extended to most areas of the ship, including cabins and balconies. There are limited outdoor areas onboard areas that are designated for smoking.

10. Dine at complimentary venues

Cafe al Bacio

Beyond the main dining room and Oceanview Cafe, there are some other great free dining venues to check out onboard.

  • Café al Bacio, is a European-style café onboard many Celebrity ships. Cruisers seem to love the café and often has a lineup for its custom coffees and gelato. While the coffees are an extra charge, the exquisite pastries and sweets are complimentary for all. This is an absolute must-try!
  • Eden Café offers a wide variety of morning beverages and casual culinary bites. The bright and airy atmosphere and al fresco make it the perfect spot.
  • Spa Café is another venue to enjoy. Grab something fresh and flavorful, such as avocado bruschetta, a fresh fruit place, or an acai bowl. Great for a post-workout, healthy snack, or if you want a break from over-the-top cruising eating.
  • The Mast Grill is a top deck eatery where guests can get their barbeque/ grill favorites, such as a burger, along with other options like a sandwich and salad.

11. Know the dress code

Celebrity dress code

In recent years, dress codes have become a somewhat controversial topic among cruisers as some lament the days of tuxedos and ballgowns, whereas others feel that they are on vacation and should be able to dress as they please.

On Celebrity Cruises, guests are expected to dress at minimum “ smart casual" for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered smart casual. And, unlike many other cruise lines, this is enforced. If a guest shows up in shorts for dinner, they can fully expect to be refused entry into those venues. So pack accordingly so as to not miss out on the main dining room or have to buy pants onboard.

12. Sail the world with Celebrity

Celebrity Alaska

For guests wanting to try a different type of itinerary, Celebrity has an impressive range of sailings that span the globe. Their fleet of 15 has many mid-sized ships that can venture to ports of call that some of the bigger ships can't. Even the new Edge series can sail through the Panama Canal.

From North and South America to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific, Celebrity ships stretch out to visit 300 ports worldwide. It has even designed a series of ships to visit the Galapagos Islands, with advanced technology that minimizes the impact on the environment and provides an incredibly intimate setting with under 100 guests.

13. Try a variety of activities

Celebrity lawn

Celebrity Cruises offers its guests a wide range of entertainment and activities onboard its ships. World-class theatre productions, live bands, classes of all types, and trivia are some of the fun things to do while sailing.

There are also some unique and interesting activities beyond the expected. How about lawn bowling or practice putting on real grass? Wine pairing, whiskey tasting, a ship tour, pickleball, glass blowing, or watching a movie on a rooftop garden are part of the amazing selection of events.

Celebrity ships do have a lot to love, but there are some things you won't find on a Celebrity ship. There are no epic waterslides, waterparks, bumper cars, roller coasters, rock climbing walks, ice skating, and carousels that are common on the mega-ships of cruise lines like Royal Caribbean.

14. Try out the Magic Carpet (for free)

Magic carpet

The Edge series of ships feature the brightly colored Magic Carpet, which jets off one side of the ship. It is far more than a gimmick; it is a multipurpose venue that offers the most specular views, in addition to acting as a launch pad for tenders in ports that require them.

Although dining at the Magic Carpet is an extra cost, during the day, guests can enjoy the scenic views for free (drinks are extra, though). Its opaque roof allows for breezes while keeping out of the hot sun. A perfect spot to relax.

15. Indulge in specialty dining

Eden Celebrity

For those who consider themselves foodies or love to explore different types of cuisine, Celebrity is the place for you. There is a wide array of dining experiences beyond the traditional buffet and main dining rooms.

French cuisine, highlighted at Le Petit Chef, sushi, steakhouse, and Eden, all delight guests with their gastronomy. There is an extensive range of options led by Michelin-star chefs and other culinary experts to ensure top quality. Buying a dining package before the cruise is the most economical way to go.

16. Celebrity is autism friendly

Kids activities

Celebrity Cruises offers autism-friendly interactive initiatives for families, including sensory-friendly films,  toys, and dietary menu options. Additionally, they offer a wide range of autism-friendly products and services, such as priority check-in, boarding, and departure, and special dietary accommodations. The cruise line seeks to make things easier with flexible grouping by ability for children 3 to 12 years old.

For more fun, autism-friendly films are presented in a low-lighting and low-volume environment. The cruise line also has an Autism Friendly Toy Lending Catalog along with non-toxic crayons, markers, watercolors, building blocks, dominoes, and picture books.

17. Enjoy the (free) extras

Celebrity water

One of the biggest surprises of sailing on a Celebrity cruise are some of the nice (and more often free) touches. One of the best is the ability to drop your stuff off in your cabin, even when it's not ready. No worries about lugging around carry-ons while you explore the ship. A small thing, but super convenient.

Cabins have a few extra niceties, including upgraded bath products. No three-in-one mystery shampoo, conditioner, and soap in the shower. Pool towels, no problem, no need to be held hostage over a fee for a towel you never signed out.

Another plus is the variety of chilled fruit waters on the dock to welcome guests back to the ship, particularly nice after a hot day in the sun. They also had a crew there with cool towels to freshen up. All these little things add up, making you feel pampered and appreciated.

18. Gratuities vary by cabin type

Celebrity spa cafe

Celebrity automatically adds gratuities to guests' accounts, an additional thank you to employees who work very hard to make your cruise vacation special. The amounts are:

  • $18 USD per person per day for Inside, Ocean View, and Veranda staterooms

  • $18.50 USD per person, per day for Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms

  • $23.00 per person per day for guests of The Retreat.

This is separate from the 20% gratuity that will be added to all beverages, mini bar purchases, and beverage packages. Celebrity has noted that gratuities are distributed to dining, bar, and culinary services staff, stateroom attendants, and other hotel services teams.

19.  Rotate between themed main dining rooms

Tuscan Celebrity

While only offered on the Edge series of ships, one of the most significant changes Celebrity has made is the separation of the main dining rooms into four different themed venues. Cyprus, Cosmopolitan, Tuscan, and Normandie offer specialties as well as classics such as steak, chicken, and shrimp and signature dishes.

Being smaller than a standard main dining room, these themed dining rooms have more of a specialty dining feel and offer some mouth-watering options. Before you book the pricier specialty dining venues, you may want to give them a try. Normandie, in particular, is well known for its beef tenderloin dish, among other gourmet items on its menu.

20. Leave some things at home

Packing for a cruise

There are a few items that are prohibited on Celebrity ships for the safety of the guests and the smooth operation of the vessel. Guests cannot bring an iron or steamer onboard the ship, but they do offer laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing services for an additional fee. This can be arranged through the cabin attendant.

Other things to leave home include anything that generates heat or has open flames, like candles, hot plates, coffee makers, or kettles. Curling and flats irons are okay. Extension cords, illegal drugs (including marijuana), knives, and other weapons aren't allowed as well. Although wine is permitted, hard alcohol and beer are sadly not.

21. You can use your Celebrity drink and wi-fi packages at Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay

A private island in the Bahamas is quite an exciting addition to any sunny Caribbean itinerary, and Celebrity has recently announced that it will be visiting Royal Caribbean’s popular Perfect Day at CocoCay. This is great for families as well as adults who want a day in the sun. The island has a waterpark, a lively Oasis Lagoon pool, as well as tons of laid-back beaches, and the stylish Coco Beach Club that features an infinity pool, lobster for lunch, and incredible over-the-water bungalows.

Celebrity passengers visiting for the day can use both their drink and wi-fi packages while on the island, which has a number of great bars and complimentary food venues.

22. Watch out for gift card limitations

Celebrity Store

Gift cards have become increasingly popular, a great present for that hard-to-buy person on your list. Celebrity gift cards are available in increments of $25, $50, $100, $250, and $500, providing a wide range of options.

There is a catch, though. Gift cards can only be applied toward new bookings. They cannot be used to pay for any ship board charges, including but not limited to gift shop purchases, casino debts, shore excursions, or gratuities. For those wanting to give a more flexible gift, onboard credit can be purchased for a cruise at the Celebrity Store on their website.

23. Prepaid gratuities are no longer included in the all-inclusive packages

Celebrity crew

Celebrity gained a lot of praise from cruisers for its all-inclusive package, making for a stress-free vacation thanks to a number of included benefits like drinks, wi-fi, and gratuities. However,  the cruise line has recently announced that they are removing prepaid gratuities from these packages. Cruisers will need to make sure to budget accordingly.

Any new booking after October 4, 2023, will be subject to these new exclusions. Thankfully, it does apply to current bookings.

This is a significant change that cruisers might not realize when booking, especially if they have had the all-inclusive package in the past. This change will add to the cost of a cruise, especially for Retreat guests, who will now pay $23 per day per person.

24. Download the Celebrity App

Celebrity app

Don’t wait until onboard; download the Celebrity App prior to the cruise to check out information like menus and events. Checking in and the muster drill can be quickly done on the app. Another great bonus is that the app can also be used to keep in touch with fellow cruisers with a free chat feature.

Once onboard, the app provides a wealth of information on activities, events, excursions, and announcements, as well as keeps up to date on onboard spending. Some ships, such as the Edge series of ships, allow passengers to control their stateroom via their phone, including the TV, lighting, temperature, and window shades. It can be downloaded through the app store or Google Play.

25. Celebrity’s buffets are scaled back in the evenings

Celebrity buffet

Something a little surprising, but Celebrity’s buffet offering is paired down during dinner, in comparison to a much more extensive lunchtime offering. For those who love the full-size buffets on ships such as Royal Caribbean, be prepared for a different style of evening buffets. This isn’t to say that the food is not good; it is, and in fact, Celebrity is well known for their top not-cruise, and their buffets have a number of stellar dishes.

This new change was introduced earlier this year, with staff explaining that it was to prevent food waste. With so many guests heading to the main dining room and specialty restaurants, the Oceanview Café is not busy enough to demand such a large offering. For those with picky eaters in your group, you may want to head to the main dining room or consider specialty venues.

26. Basic wi-fi is only available as part of all-included packages

Celebrity internet

Celebrity offers its guests two options to connect to the internet:  basic and premium wi-fi. The lowest-priced option, the basic wi-fi allows passengers to browse the web, send emails, and text family and friends via select messaging apps.

However, Celebrity has recently made a change, whereby this value option is only available when purchased as part of eligible “All Included” rates. It can no longer be purchased separately, either before or during the cruise. This all-included rate also includes the classic drink package and can add several hundred dollars to the cost of the cruise fare.

27. There is no self-serve laundry onboard

laundry-stock

For guests who are on a longer trip or have some younger, messy guests in their traveling party and are in search of laundry, there are limited options. Celebrity provides laundry and dry cleaning services on a per-item basis for suits, dresses, and more casual items. There are no self-serve facilities, unfortunately.

As with most cruise lines, guests cannot bring an iron or steamer on board; however, the cruise line does offer pressing services (priced by item) with a 4-item special of $25.00. Many cruisers hang up wrinkly clothes right away in the bathroom, letting the steam of the shower do its magic. There is also Downy Wrinkle Release, which works wonders. They have smaller, travel-size bottles, which are perfect for a cruise. ,

28. Upgrade your cabin for less

Celebrity suite

For those guests who are interested in upgrading your cabin, Celebrity has their Move UP Program that allows guests to bid on an upgrade. You can log in to the website to determine if your cruise is eligible and review the stateroom options. You can bid on more than one room and will only be charged for the first two people for the room you win.

It is a good idea to check out the current price for the cabin when making a bid to ensure it is worth the money. There are a couple of important caveats to consider when trying this program. Once the bid is accepted, your card will be charged immediately, and the upgrade amount paid is final and non-refundable. You have no choice in location.

29. Board early when possible

Celebrity embarkation

Once check-in is complete,  Celebrity provides its guests with a time frame for arrival at the ship. The earlier you check-in online, the earlier your port-assigned port arrival time will be. Getting onboard earlier means your vacation starts earlier, and you can also get any must-dos out of the way, like booking specialty dining.

This does not mean you can show up whenever you want, though. If you arrive several hours before your assigned time or even before current passengers have disembarked, you may end up waiting, in some cases, outside. Conversely, give yourself plenty of time to get to the port, and it is highly recommended to not fly in on the day of the cruise, given the issues with flight cancelations of late.

30. Pick your cabin carefully

Celebrity oceanview cabin

For those of you who are light sleepers who don’t ever want to hear your neighbors watching TV, or the annoying sounds of pulsating music, it is a good idea to look at the floor plans carefully to get the best cabin possible. The Celebrity website provides deck plans for each ship with venues and cabins clearly marked. It is a good idea to look at what is above, below, and beside the stateroom you are considering.

Adjoining rooms and unobstructed views are something to consider as well. For example, on Celebrity’s newest Edge series of ships, the Magic Carpet moves up and down along the side of the ship. This can mean that the platform passes by cabins, with the ability to see in, especially if the curtains/shades are open. Additionally, people who are prone to seasickness do better on the lower decks and in the middle of the ship. Avoiding the front (bow) and rear of the ship.

31. Drop off your carry-on in your cabin

Carry-on suitcase

One very nice perk of sailing with Celebrity Cruises is the ability to quickly stop in at your cabin on embarkation day to drop off your carry-on luggage. This is something that is not ordinarily common on many other cruise lines but is a really nice touch.

Sometimes, even small bags can weigh you down while navigating the ship, getting lunch, and balancing that all-important first cocktail. This can be even trickier with excess baggage. A quick drop-off (while the crew gets things ready) is a great way to start a cruise and lessen the load.

32. Book flights with Celebrity (for peace of mind)

An option that many cruisers value is the ability to book their airfare with Celebrity. This provides peace of mind, knowing that they will handle any flight disruptions and delays. This is very important in this day and age with constant aviation disruptions, which can wreak havoc. In fact, Celebrity promises that If your flight is changed or canceled, they will help you find a seat on a new flight or even meet the ship at the next available port.

It can also help with cash flow management as flights do not need to be paid until the final cruise payment, unlike regular bookings that require immediate payment.

33. Try older ships to save money

ship

Celebrity has gotten a lot of fanfare for its innovative Edge series of ships, which have reimagined cruise ships in the best of ways. But don’t ignore some of the veteran ships of the fleet, many of which have been modernized and often come at a lower cruise fare cost.

The cruise line’s modernization program, “revolutionized” as they call it, has a budget of $500 million for updates to the entire fleet, which includes new spaces, the addition of the Retreat Area, updated restaurants and bars, as well as cabins, casino, spas and Retreat Area (suite-only area). Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Summit are two of the ships that have gone through the process. This means that passengers get to enjoy updated ships, with oftentimes lower prices than the newer ships in the fleet.

34. Get the muster drill out of the way early

Muster drill

One of the best updates to cruising has been the addition of a virtual muster drill whereby guests can watch a video to learn about all the safety rules and regulations for their cruise. This can easily be done on your phone in less than five minutes; in fact, many passengers complete it while waiting to board. Then, once onboard, just a quick drop-in at the muster location, and it's all done.

Although you don’t need an internet package to complete it once onboard, you will need access to wi-fi to download the Celebrity app, which is best to do at home.

35. Review Celebrity’s cancelation policy

Edge

When booking and paying off a cruise, it is really important to understand the terms and conditions associated with this purchase. For example, if you book a non-refundable cruise and want to cancel, you will lose your deposit and a portion of the payment, depending on how long until the cruise.

For example, within 30 days, guests are not eligible to receive any money back, which is why insurance is so important. If you are sick or you miss the cruise due to a delayed flight, the cruise line will not refund you. Guests can purchase insurance directly from Celebrity, in addition to numerous other independent companies, some of which cover transportation delays, medical issues, or cancel for any reason.

36. Photo packages can’t be purchased post-cruise

Celebrity photo package

A photo package can be a fantastic way to capture all those wonderful cruise memories. Many love getting pictures done on formal nights when they are dressed and look great. Also, it is an opportunity to get family pictures in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

Often a disappointment to many, pictures and packages cannot be purchased post-cruise, so it is important to make sure this is booked if this is a must-have for you and your family.

37. Take advantage of embarkation day offers

Spa

Although most things like wi-fi and drink packages are cheaper when purchased pre-cruse, there are some embarkation specials to watch out for. Specialty dining, spa packages, and services are among the most popular and can be a fantastic add-on to a cruise vacation.

Before rushing into purchasing these extras, it is a good idea to make sure of any restrictions. Some deals are only valid on sea days or shorter than a standard service. Overall, it can be a great way to start the cruise and save some money at the same time.

38. Book your next cruise before you disembark

Celebrity Summit

The end of a cruise can be a sad occasion for most, with cruisers feeling no rush to get back to reality. A great way to get over this and save money is to book your next cruise while still onboard.

With its Future Cruise Vacations Program, Celebrity offers its guests the best offer available, as well as current promotions such as extra onboard credit. There are two options for this program. The first is the Book Now Program, where guests select their itinerary and dates and receive up to $500 in onboard credit. The other option – Book Later Program, allows guests to reserve a sailing, with the option to pick up a cruise within 6 months. With this option, passengers will receive up to $500 in onboard credit.

39. Check your onboard account often

Celebrity shopping

There are plenty of ways to keep track of spending while onboard, and while this can be a not-so-fun part of the day, it is best to keep tabs on your bill. Thanks to Celebrity’s app, this is a quick process that can be done in seconds. Alternatively, you can visit guest services and get a printout of the bill.

Sometimes mistakes happen, or your kids charge something you are unaware of. Whatever the issue, it is best to keep on top of it. It is far easier to pop into guest services while onboard instead of dealing with an issue once home.

40. Enjoy free room service

Everyone loves a free perk, and starting the day off with breakfast on your balcony is heavenly. Passengers receive complimentary room service on Celebrity ships. In particular, guests can enjoy a continental breakfast, which is available e from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day of the cruise except disembarkation day. Outside of these hours, room service has a fee of $9.95*, plus a 20% gratuity will automatically be added to your check.

For guests staying in the Retreat, room service is complimentary. Celebrity top-end suites, in addition to Zenith Captain Club members, receive complimentary room service 24 hours a day.

41. Cruise off-season

Rome

Sailing off-season, or shoulder season as it is commonly referred to, is one of the best ways to save money and a great time to cruise. Early January and fall can be great times to travel, especially when kids go back to school.

Celebrity offers a vast array of cruises, with lots of choices every month. One great itinerary to take advantage of during the off-season is cruising to the Mediterranean during the winter months. With exotic ports in Egypt and Israel as well as Spain, it is a spectacular cruise. Another bonus is that there are far fewer crowds during these months, which makes seeing famous sites a lot more manageable.

42. Bring a reusable water bottle

reusable-water-bottle-stock

There are a lot of great reasons to bring our own water bottle on a cruise. Save money by skipping pricey bottled water, being good to the environment, and staying well hydrated are some of the top reasons. It is always a good idea to add some nice cold water to the mix while sipping cocktails in the sun.

This is also a great option when going onshore and unsure about the cost and quality of local water. Some bottles even have filters to clean water-borne illnesses or bacteria, getting rid of E. coli. No need to worry about local water when doing an excursion for a day.

43. Be ready to cruise

Woman with carry-on suitcase

Around 45 days before your cruise, check-in will become available, and it’s a good idea to do this as soon as possible to secure an early boarding time. Earlier on the ship means you get your vacation started sooner!  Check-in is a fairly quick process but does require appropriate identification on hand to upload details to the system.

When that magical day finally arrives and you get to the ship, make drop-off seamless by printing your luggage tags ahead of time.  Porters have blank luggage tags at the port, but it is a good idea to print them ahead of time and ensure they are well fastened to your bag. Many people use plastic holders to protect them, so the names and stateroom are clearly legible. In addition to this, staple them on, and be sure to give your porter a tip.

44. Try a guaranteed stateroom to save money

Celebrity balcony

When booking a cruise, Celebrity provides its guests with the option to select from a number of cabin categories, including interior, ocean view, veranda, and suites, among other options. Once the room type has been picked, cruisers can choose between letting Celebrity assign them a room or self-selecting.

What is the benefit of letting the cruise line assign a cabin? The answer is money. This option can save hundreds of dollars off the total cruise fare. There is a catch, however. You may end up in a cabin with an obstructed view or in a less desirable area of the ship, like under a nightclub.

45. Plan to arrive a day ahead when flying to catch your cruise

Airplane taking off and landing

This is one of the most important tips for getting on a cruise. Fly in the day before. There have been countless stories of guests missing their cruise due to flight delays, and unfortunately, it has become a reality for traveling these days. The last thing anyone wants is to start their vacation by stressing out whether they will make it to the port on time. Come the day before, get a hotel, and relax by the pool.

In addition to this, for those driving a good distance, again, it is best to allow for lots of time. Accidents appear out of nowhere, which can clog up roads for hours. If the worst case happens, the ship will not wait and not be reimbursed for the lost cruise.

46. Pay attention to ship time

Celebrity excursion 2

Cruise ships sail on their own time, “ship time," as it is called. All of the activities, entertainment, embarkation, and disembarkation are according to this nautical clock. Many cruise ships sail across a number of time zones while traveling, and the cruise line will advise its passengers if and when they need to adjust their clocks. Sometimes, this aligns with local time, and sometimes it does not.

This can be confusing at times, especially after a few drinks and you misread the clock at the local bar. Everyone has seen pier runners on social media as they race down to the dock, screaming at the cruise ship to wait for them. You do not want to be one of those people. If you have your phone on roaming, it will adjust to local time, which can add to the confusion. Set your phone to not change by putting it on airplane mode or use an old-fashioned, offline analog watch.

47. Don’t bother bringing a towel

Celebrity pool

This is a frequent question for many but no, guests do not need to bring a towel when packing for their Celebrity cruise. With all the other things that you need to pack, plenty of clothes and shoes, as well as leaving room for souvenirs, a bulky towel is not necessary.

The cruise line has a number of places throughout the ship to get beach towels to bring on shore for beach days, as well as regular towels in the stateroom. Another plus to sailing with Celebrity is that there is no signup process to get a towel; you just help yourself with no fear of being charged if you leave it by accident on your pool chair.

48. Bring some cash

Cash on cruise ship

It is a good idea to bring some money on your Celebrity cruise, but many people are not sure how much. While most places accept credit cards, cash can be better when dealing with small vendors in ports. Often, for a couple of dollars for some fun souvenirs, they won't take credit cards. It's also good for tipping in a taxi.

Onboard, cash is the best way to show your appreciation for hard-working staff. Many guests bring small bills for bar staff, cabin staff, waiters, or anyone else who makes the cruise special.

49. Join a FB group for your sailing (or other message boards)

Magic Carpet people

There are numerous message boards and Facebook groups that have pages for specific sailings for each cruise line. This is a great way to get information and meet other guests who will be on your cruise. Many times, they organize information events and meet-ups, as well as other activities once you are all onboard.

This is also a good opportunity to share ideas about excursions, what’s great to do onboard, as well as other trip details like hotels and transportation to the port.

50. Bring must-haves from home

Little boy

Although there are a number of shops onboard Celebrity ships, must-have items like sunscreen can be quite expensive, and the range of products is limited. Your favorite shampoo, late-night snack, or protein bars for a short excursion will probably not be available on the ship.

Packing all you need is particularly important for families with kids. Make sure to include diapers, your kids' favorite pre-packaged snacks, and everything that your kids need to feel comfortable. Some of these items should be included in your carry-on, as it might be hours until your luggage is delivered to your cabin. Bathing suites are must-haves for many who want to enjoy the fun right away. Don't forget to include them in your carry-on!
