Have you ever thought about going on a Royal Caribbean cruise for Christmas? We get a lot of questions about what it is like to cruise on Royal Caribbean over the holidays, so here is a look at the main dining room menu for Christmas day.

Holly Herrera snapped this photo of the Christmas dinner menu on Oasis of the Seas.  Like other holidays, the main dining room menu on holidays tends to be the same across the fleet.

On holidays, the main dining room menu typically retains the usual options, along with an added holiday menu.

What would you order for dinner from this menu if you were onboard? Share your answers in the comments below!

Where should I spend my money on a Royal Caribbean cruise?

Every vacation dollar counts, and first-time cruisers often want to know what is really worth spending a little bit (or a lot) extra on for their Royal Caribbean cruise.

Ultimately, this is a very subjective question, but here are a few areas that I think one can make a compelling argument for spending more on, and a few areas you can definitely save your cash.

Worth spending extra!

Shore Excursions

When you go on a cruise vacation, a big draw of cruising is being whisked away to different ports of call from the comfort of your ship. With that in mind, what you do on shore is a major component to the vacation, and what you should be spending your money on after the cruise fare.

The ports you visit offer a variety of activities to do, from snorkeling, to zip lining, to food tours, to nature hikes and more. In short, the places your ship will visit offers a taste of the very best you can experience and spending money on a tour that takes you to somewhere beautiful or immerses you in another culture is a worthwhile cost.

Whether you book your shore excursion through Royal Caribbean or on your own, every cruiser should allocate extra room in the vacation budget for what you will do on shore.

Specialty Dining

While there is plenty of fantastic complimentary food included in your cruise fare, there is also a great deal of equally awesome food in cuisines and cooking styles not otherwise available on the ship to enjoy.

Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean has gone from a neat little side offering, to a major component of the dining experience onboard. While you do not need to eat only at specialty restaurants, I do think indulging in a restaurant or two during your cruise is a fantastic way to enhance the vacation.

What makes specialty dining more compelling as something truly worth spending your money is the advent of dining packages. A specialty dining package allows you to enjoy multiple (or even unlimited) specialty restaurants for half the price of paying for them individually. If you plan on spending extra on specialty dining, invest in a dining package to reap greater rewards.

Escape Rooms

Perhaps the best activity to be added to Royal Caribbean ships in recent years is the escape room game.  Available on more and more Royal Caribbean ships, escape rooms are a timed challenge where a team of guests compete to solve a series of riddles and clues that will "unlock" the sequence to the primary puzzle.

Royal Caribbean teamed up with one of the leaders in escape room games around the world, and the result has been an ever-increasing challenging and entertaining activity for nearly all guests to enjoy.

Escape rooms do come with an additional cost, but because they are so well-themed and developed, I think it is worth spending extra for to see if your family is up to the challenge.

Honorable Mentions

For the right person, these add-ons are also worth the cost of buying on a Royal Caribbean cruise:

  • Drink Packages: If you can drink enough every day of your cruise, there is no doubt that a beverage package will save you money on drinks. If your cruise visits Perfect Day at CocoCay or Labadee, then the value proposition increases dramatically.
  • Voom WiFi: For those of us that like to be connected and checking in online (that's me), an internet package is a great option. Plus, it helps keep in contact with other guests onboard.

Save your money

Casino

Full disclosure: While logically this argument makes sense, I tend not to follow my own advice.

Logically, the casino is somewhere that statistics show you are much more likely to lose your money than win it back. Sure, the casino can be fun (especially if you start winning), but if there was one place you ought to skip and spend your money elsewhere, it is probably here.

Art auctions

While art auctions are a staple of many cruise lines, they also carry an unfortunate reputation for long processing times and subjective thoughts on perceived value of the pieces available.

At the end of the day, you are better off buying your art elsewhere and spending that art auction money on something else onboard.

Your thoughts

What do you think is definitely worth spending extra on during a cruise? Is there something we included you think is (not) worth the money? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

New visa requirements for cruises visiting Vietnam

In:
24 Dec 2019
By:
Matt Hochberg

Royal Caribbean shared an update on necessary travel documentation needed for cruises visiting any port in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Visa On Arrival (VOA) program for the following nationalities has changed. Effective immediately, any guests sailing from the below countries should be informed to apply for a visa prior to the arrival at the Vietnam port of call. Please note that the 12 highlighted countries have just been added to the list.

  • Israel
  • Turkey
  • Serbia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Kazakhstan
  • Afghanistan
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Pakistan
  • Morocco
  • Yemen Arab Republic
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Nigeria
  • Oman
  • Bangladesh
  • Jordan
  • Cameron
  • Democratic Republic Of The Congo
  • Sierra Leone
  • Fiji
  • South Africa
  • Mozambique
  • Kenya
  • Ghana

Any Royal Caribbean ships calling at Vietnam ports will no longer be able to apply for the VOA for those guests from the above listed countries. If a guest fails to obtain the visa prior to the cruise, they may be allowed to sail with the ship. However, they will not be able to disembark in any of the Vietnam ports.

Guest should be sure to keep your travel documents and SetSail Pass handy. They’ll need them from the moment they arrive to the port, all the way to boarding the ship, so they won’t want to pack them in their luggage.

Following a few days of civil unrest on the French side of St. Martin, where the entire half of the island was closed off, we have an update on the situation there now.

Following "a series of civil demonstrations that began on December 12, 2019," the St. Martin Tourist office issued a statement on the current situation.

Dated December 23, the statement starts off with good news that, "much of St. Martin has returned to normal". The statement goes on to say, "shops and restaurants in Marigot, Grand Case and Orient Bay are open and operational as well as the main tourist attractions."

"St. Martin Hotels, guesthouses and villas are open with ease of arrivals and departures."

"The Grand Case airport, The Marigot Port and Ferry Terminal as well as Marina Fort Louis are operating as usual."

The Tourist Office did noe that there may still be debris left from roadblocks, particularly in the Sandy Ground and French Quarter areas.  But they reiterated that all roadblocks have been lifted and visitors can come and go once again.

It looks like one of the most-asked about features in Royal Caribbean's app might debut in the second half of 2020.

A RoyalCaribbeanBlog reader shared a response from Royal Caribbean's app support account to the question of when chat might available. The email says, "we hope to have chat on all of our ships by the third or fourth quarter of 2020."

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. SVP Digital Experience Jay Schneider recently shared some insight into the cruise line's digital evolution, and spoke to the fact they are keenly aware of the strong demand for this feature to become available, "We know people want chat. We know it's the number one feature they ask for, and it's something we're trying to rush to the market."

A beta version of the chat feature is currently available on Allure of the Seas & Harmony of the Seas

There is no cost to use Royal Caribbean's app while onboard and you do not need an internet package to use the app either.

The app is available on the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

What is the best time to cruise to Alaska?

In:
21 Dec 2019
By:
Matt Hochberg

When you're ready to have the Alaska cruise vacation of your dreams, picking the best time to cruise is going to be the first major decision to make.

Alaska is very different from the Caribbean in terms of cruising, but don't let the cooler temperatures and ice fool you. It's just as fun as a tropical vacation because of the amazing opportunities waiting in the 49th state.

Nearly all Alaska cruises are at least seven nights in duration, but you'll need to pick the perfect week to head up and try it.

Our team has sailed to Alaska dozens of times, and we've tried a cruise during different months of the season to figure out the best times.  There are plusses and minuses to every month, but we can draw some conclusions based on our collective experience.

To help pick the best time of year to cruise, we have a comprehensive look at what you need to know about taking a cruise to Alaska.

May

May is the early part of the Alaska cruise season, and it is the time of year when things begin to truly thaw in Alaska after winter. The average high temperature in Juneau in May is 56°F. May is also one of the driest months of the Alaska cruise season, which means less of a chance of being rained on during your shore excursion.

May is also one the best values for cruising to Alaska, with the lowest fares of the season. In fact, May is part of the "shoulder season" because of the lower temperatures and the fact school is still in session, so bargain hunters will want to target this month. To that point, you will generally find lower crowds in Alaska during this month.

June & July

North Star

The summer cruise season is during the months of June and July, and is one of the most popular times of the year to go on a cruise to Alaska. You will find the most daylight hours (14 to 18) during this time of year. The average temperatures range between 62°F - 65°F in June and July. The weather can still be a little drier in early June, but that will change by July.

July is the warmest month of the Alaska cruise season, with average highs around 65°F. Predicting the weather in July is difficult, as you can experience rain, hot temperatures and everything in between.

In terms of crowds, you will find peak cruising season begin in mid-June, and extend through much of August. In short, this is peak cruising season, so deals and low fares are few and far between.  Bargains can still be found in early June, but the closer you get to July, the higher those prices.

Helipad in Alaska

If wildlife is of interest, then early June is a great time for whale watching because this is around the time of year where whales reach Alaska waters and active near or at the surface.

It is also worth noting that peak Mosquito season is from mid June though about the end of July. The good news for cruisers is that mosquitoes are not seagoing and they do not like wind at all. Moreover, mosquitoes tend to be worst in Northern Alaska, so it is less of a concern for cruise ship guests.

August

Kayaking in Alaska

August is another busy time of year for cruises to Alaska, but it also represents the tail end of the peak cruise season. The closer to the end of the month, the better prices you will find on cruises. In general, prices in August tend to be lower than June or July, making it a more affordable time of year to cruise.

August averages about 16 hours of daylight, so this means daylight hours are at their peak. Most of the month is still quite busy from a crowds standpoint. Rainfall is at its highest in August, with around half the days in August experiencing rain.

The Alaska berry picking season is anywhere from late August to late September. In addition, bears are quite active in August due to the great salmon spawn. Whales are also active in August, as they start their migration south.

September

Ovation in Alaska

September culminates with the end of the Alaska cruise season, and it is a shoulder season for sailings. As a result, you can find some of the best deals of the year for Alaska.

Autumn arrives early in Alaska, and that means leaves changing colors and cooler weather. Temperatures are usually closer to the beginning of the cruise season. The average rainfall is still rather high.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says moose, caribou and muskoxen all mate during this time, so they are active in open areas while they search for a mate or spar for dominance within the herd. Bears, however, tend to begin their hibernation during this month.

Which month to choose

Serenade of the Seas near Hubbard Glacier

To pick the right time of year to cruise for you, you will have to weigh cruise costs, weather, and what you are most interested in seeing. Alaska cruise prices are lowest in May or September. The least amount of rain is typically in May or early June. June, July and August offer the warmest temperatures and some of the most active wildlife spotting opportunities.

  • Best value: May or September
  • Best time for whale watching: June or July
  • Best time for bears, moose and other animals: August

The bottom line is a cruise to Alaska is rarely disappointing. Regardless of which month you choose, Alaska is a fantastic place to explore and each month provides some intriguing benefits.
