The deteriorating situation in Haiti has forced Royal Caribbean to change planned visits to its private destination.

Guests and travel partners of Royal Caribbean received a major update about sailings to Labadee, Haiti. In emails, the cruise line has announced that it is cancelling stops in Labadee due to the evolving situation in Haiti. 

In its communication to guests and travel partners,  Aurora Yera-Rodriguez, Assistant Vice President of Royal Caribbean International, wrote: “Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we're temporarily suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet. We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”

Although there have been a number of travel advisories for Haiti for many years, this has not resulted in a significant impact on Royal Caribbean, as Labadee, its private destination, is located on the northern coast of Haiti, far from the turmoil in the that has plagued the capital for years. 

What does this mean for guests currently cruising to Labadee? 

How does this impact cruisers currently on their way to Labadee? Further elaborating on the subject, Yera -Rodriguez explained: “Guests onboard Adventure of the Seas on a March 14 sailing will be re-routed Grand Turk, Turks, and Caicos.” Grand Turk is a port island northern island of Turks and Caicos, used by Carnival Cruise line, not usually visited by Royal Caribbean. 

Alternatively, some guests have received emails noting that they will have a sea day in lieu of the port day in Laadee. Guests onboard the Symphony of the Seas for their March 14th sailing, were advised: “We'll now enjoy a Sea Day instead of visiting Labadee. We've also added extra time to our visit to Falmouth, Jamaica, so you'll have more time to enjoy everything this beautiful destination has to offer.” 

Although this is no doubt a disappointment to many guests, Royal Caribbean has repeatedly stated that the safety of its passengers and crew is of the utmost importance. 

Excursion refunds 

On social media, some guests have expressed concern about money lost for booked excursions. Royal Caribbean addressed this issue: “Any pre-paid Royal Caribbean International shore excursions booked for Labadee will automatically be refunded to your original form of payment. In the meantime, feel free to browse all the exciting shore excursion options for your sailing in My Royal Cruise to level up your vacation. Thank you for your understanding. We can't wait to welcome you onboard Symphony of the Seas!”

Typically, guests enjoy fishing trips, a day out on the ocean, jet skis, and ocean water-based activities while visiting Labadee.  On land, there are also some nice amenities, such as cabanas at Barefoot Beach or the thrill of the Dragons Tail Coaster, which provides the ultimate in adrenaline rush riding down the side of the mountain. The 680-foot ride provides incredible views of other surrounding areas while cruising at speeds near 30 miles per hour.

Labadee is also renowned for its beaches, and guests love a beach BBQ while enjoying the majestic waters of the area.

Escalation in recent days

Although this is disappointing for many, the news is not unexpected; in recent days, Haiti has made global headlines for gang violence, and on March 3, a mass prison break in Port-au-Prince led the government to declare a state of emergency after thousands of inmates escaped.  The US Embassy has advised US citizens to depart Haiti as soon as possible.

 The situation in Haiti has been worsening over the last several weeks.  Just last week, Royalcaribbeanblog.com updated readers on the ongoing situation. At the time, the cruise line sent a statement to media outlets, explaining: “The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area." Additionally, the cruise line warned: ""At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly."

This heightened attention has been due to the US Department of State’s Level 4 travel advisory, updated on July 27, 2023, citing “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure,” among the reasons the US State Department has advised against travel to Haiti for some time. Other countries that have Level 4 advisories include Russia and Syria. 

Yesterday, Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry tendered his resignation and appealed for calm as the country descends into chaos.

Royal Caribbean’s exclusive location in Haiti 

While many cruisers think of Labadee as a private island, Labadee is the name of Royal Caribbean’s beach but unlike Perfect Day at CocoCay, it isn't a private island but rather a peninsula. It’s a private port only accessible to Royal Caribbean. In fact, the area of Labadee is secured and monitored to ensure the safety of cruise passengers and crew members. 

Royal Caribbean was monitoring the situation carefully. Labadee is located on the northern coast of Haiti, where the majority of the violence occurs further south in more populated areas. Port-au-Prince is almost 100 miles from Labadee.

Just last week, Royalcaribbeanblog.com reported on the escalation of violence, Presidential crisis, and official travel warnings, with many of our readers inquiring if their cruise will still happen as scheduled. 

Labadee is monitored by guards, and a huge fence blocks it from the public, although you may not see it during your visit. In short, it's walled off from the rest of the country and is in a remote area. It's guarded by a private security force. Most employees working in the restricted area of Labadee live in remote villages located nearby, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, is over 100 miles away . Government warnings about travel to Haiti always focus on the cities.

1. Save money on drinks

Drinks can be an expensive add-on to a cruise vacation. Depending on what and how much you drink, a package may be the way to go. Celebrity offers both a classic and premium alcohol package as well as non-alcoholic options. Details are listed on your cruise planner, and it's cheaper to snag a pre-cruise deal rather than waiting until once you are onboard to purchase them.  

Another way to save money is to bring your own wine onboard. Guests of the drinking age are allowed to bring one 750 ml bottle of wine per person but no spirits or beer.  Do note that alcoholic beverages purchased from onboard shops or in ports of call will be secured by ship until the end of the vacation.​​​

2. Watch for deals 

Celebrity offers a quality cruise experience, and its prices often reflect that. While not the most expensive in the marketplace, it can run slightly higher than some other companies, such as Royal Caribbean. 

Good news though, the cruise line offers numerous promotions throughout the year. A frequent deal is 75% off the second guest, along with additional onboard credit. Watch out for other discounts that include basic wi-fi and the classic drink package. Make sure to sign up on their website to get up-to-date offers. Also, working with a good travel agent can help you understand what is available.

3. Book packages and excursions early

Celebrity offers a number of pre-cruise deals, such as internet packages, shore excursions, dining, and spa treatments. Not only does advance purchasing get you a better deal, but it can also help avoid the disappointment of a sold-out excursion. If something is no longer offered, there are no guarantees that space will open up. It is far better to book something in advance and then cancel it later. 

Booking early even applies to the cruise itself. Cruise prices have been trending upward, so don't expect last-minute deals. Celebrity does offer its “Best Price Guarantee so that if a lower cruise fare is found, guests may apply for the savings, which offers some peace of mind. In the event of a price drop, contact the cruise line directly (or through a travel agent) to see what you are entitled to in terms of savings (some conditions apply).

4. Leverage your Royal Caribbean Crown and Anchor status

Celebrity has its own loyalty program called Captain's Club, which has six tiers offering varying perks to repeat cruisers. The cruise line has a reciprocity agreement with Royal Caribbean due to their common ownership. 

What does this mean for new cruisers? You can qualify for loyalty perks even before your first Celebrity cruise (Although you can’t combine points among the different brands). Cruisers with established status with Royal Caribbean are asked to contact the Captain's Club to ensure they are promoted to the equivalent tier prior to sailing. 

5. Know what’s included in your cruise fare

There are two main fare options when booking a Celebrity cruise. The basic fare is called the cruise-only rate, which is their lowest fare and is available for inside, oceanview, veranda, and concierge-level staterooms. This is the standard cruise offering dining, entertainment, and daily activities.

The “all included” option includes the Classic Drink Package and Basic Wi-Fi, which can be significant savings if guests plan to purchase packages anyway. 

In addition to this, the cruise line offers AquaClass, which has special access to Blu, a private restaurant, the thermal suite, and complimentary fitness classes. You do not have to purchase the all-inclusive package, though. You are able to stay in an AquaClass room with a base fare. 

One above this is the Retreat, which is the most all-inclusive option with premium drink and wi-fi packages, private dining, sundeck, and lounge, as well as concierge and butler service.

6. Use a good travel agent 

serif">Clearly, Celebrity has a lot of options, different fares, cabin alternatives, and lots of onboard experiences to choose from. Using a good travel agent can be a great way to navigate all these choices and make sure you get the best price possible.

Often the best way to get a travel agent is to get a recommendation from a friend or family. They should be familiar with Celebrity and have booked/ sailed with them before. Travel agents are paid through the cruise line, so there is no additional cost for cruisers, and they can save you both time and money by finding the best deal, as well as managing any issues that come up. 

7. Kids are welcome on Celebrity Cruises 

Celebrity may not be known as a family cruise line, but it does welcome passengers of all ages. The cruise line provides numerous complimentary programs, family-friendly excursions, and pint-sized menus to make cruising easier and more fun for families.

They also offer free kids and teen programs in a dedicated, supervised environment. Camp at Sea features sports, arts and crafts, theme parties, treasure hunts, and much more. Teens can hang out with friends in their own spaces, play in video game competitions, dance, and enjoy sports. They can even take culinary classes.

 8. Maximize loyalty points  

Make sure to sign up for Celebrity’s loyalty program, called Captain’s Club, which awards points based on the length of sailing and stateroom category. Even when you aren’t sailing, there is the opportunity to earn more points. Celebrity’s Power Up points give guests a chance to earn extra points by watching videos, taking surveys, or engaging in social media activities. Power Up points are converted at a ratio of 10 Power Up points to 1 Club point.

The activities are easy to complete and informative. The recent promotion in May (worth 30 points) asked loyalty members to watch a video that features Celebrity captains as they discussed how the Edge series of ships continue to revolutionize the industry.  

9. No smoking in the casinos

Celebrity’s onboard casinos provide passengers with various slots and table games, including blackjack, poker, craps, baccarat, and roulette. The cruise line offers casino guests Blue Chip Club Rewards, which has concierge service, beverage perks, free play, and much more.

It may be a surprise to many, though, to find out that Celebrity Cruises has a no-smoking policy when it comes to their casinos. This may be welcome news to some or an unexpected disappointment for others. The cruise line cites the health and comfort of guests as the rationale for this rule.

The no-smoking policy extended to most areas of the ship, including cabins and balconies. There are limited outdoor areas onboard areas that are designated for smoking.

10. Dine at complimentary venues

Beyond the main dining room and Oceanview Cafe, there are some other great free dining venues to check out onboard.

• Café al Bacio, is a European-style café onboard many Celebrity ships. Cruisers seem to love the café and often has a lineup for its custom coffees and gelato. While the coffees are an extra charge, the exquisite pastries and sweets are complimentary for all. This is an absolute must-try!
• Eden Café offers a wide variety of morning beverages and casual culinary bites. The bright and airy atmosphere and al fresco make it the perfect spot. 
• Spa Café is another venue to enjoy. Grab something fresh and flavorful, such as avocado bruschetta, a fresh fruit place, or an acai bowl. Great for a post-workout, healthy snack, or if you want a break from over-the-top cruising eating.
• The Mast Grill is a top deck eatery where guests can get their barbeque/ grill favorites, such as a burger, along with other options like a sandwich and salad.

11. Know the dress code

In recent years, dress codes have become a somewhat controversial topic among cruisers as some lament the days of tuxedos and ballgowns, whereas others feel that they are on vacation and should be able to dress as they please. 

On Celebrity Cruises, guests are expected to dress at minimum “ smart casual" for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered smart casual. And, unlike many other cruise lines, this is enforced. If a guest shows up in shorts for dinner, they can fully expect to be refused entry into those venues. So pack accordingly so as to not miss out on the main dining room or have to buy pants onboard.  

12. Sail the world with Celebrity 

For guests wanting to try a different type of itinerary, Celebrity has an impressive range of sailings that span the globe. Their fleet of 15 has many mid-sized ships that can venture to ports of call that some of the bigger ships can't. Even the new Edge series can sail through the Panama Canal.

From North and South America to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific, Celebrity ships stretch out to visit 300 ports worldwide. It has even designed a series of ships to visit the Galapagos Islands, with advanced technology that minimizes the impact on the environment and provides an incredibly intimate setting with under 100 guests.

13. Try a variety of activities 

Celebrity Cruises offers its guests a wide range of entertainment and activities onboard its ships. World-class theatre productions, live bands, classes of all types, and trivia are some of the fun things to do while sailing.

There are also some unique and interesting activities beyond the expected. How about lawn bowling or practice putting on real grass? Wine pairing, whiskey tasting, a ship tour, pickleball, glass blowing, or watching a movie on a rooftop garden are part of the amazing selection of events. 

Celebrity ships do have a lot to love, but there are some things you won't find on a Celebrity ship. There are no epic waterslides, waterparks, bumper cars, roller coasters, rock climbing walks, ice skating, and carousels that are common on the mega-ships of cruise lines like Royal Caribbean.

14. Try out the Magic Carpet (for free)

The Edge series of ships feature the brightly colored Magic Carpet, which jets off one side of the ship. It is far more than a gimmick; it is a multipurpose venue that offers the most specular views, in addition to acting as a launch pad for tenders in ports that require them. 

Although dining at the Magic Carpet is an extra cost, during the day, guests can enjoy the scenic views for free (drinks are extra, though). Its opaque roof allows for breezes while keeping out of the hot sun. A perfect spot to relax. 

15. Indulge in specialty dining

For those who consider themselves foodies or love to explore different types of cuisine, Celebrity is the place for you. There is a wide array of dining experiences beyond the traditional buffet and main dining rooms. 

French cuisine, highlighted at Le Petit Chef, sushi, steakhouse, and Eden, all delight guests with their gastronomy. There is an extensive range of options led by Michelin-star chefs and other culinary experts to ensure top quality. Buying a dining package before the cruise is the most economical way to go. 

16. Celebrity is autism friendly

Celebrity Cruises offers autism-friendly interactive initiatives for families, including sensory-friendly films,  toys, and dietary menu options. Additionally, they offer a wide range of autism-friendly products and services, such as priority check-in, boarding, and departure, and special dietary accommodations. The cruise line seeks to make things easier with flexible grouping by ability for children 3 to 12 years old. 

For more fun, autism-friendly films are presented in a low-lighting and low-volume environment. The cruise line also has an Autism Friendly Toy Lending Catalog along with non-toxic crayons, markers, watercolors, building blocks, dominoes, and picture books.

17. Enjoy the (free) extras

One of the biggest surprises of sailing on a Celebrity cruise are some of the nice (and more often free) touches. One of the best is the ability to drop your stuff off in your cabin, even when it's not ready. No worries about lugging around carry-ons while you explore the ship. A small thing, but super convenient. 

Cabins have a few extra niceties, including upgraded bath products. No three-in-one mystery shampoo, conditioner, and soap in the shower. Pool towels, no problem, no need to be held hostage over a fee for a towel you never signed out.

Another plus is the variety of chilled fruit waters on the dock to welcome guests back to the ship, particularly nice after a hot day in the sun. They also had a crew there with cool towels to freshen up. All these little things add up, making you feel pampered and appreciated. 

18. Gratuities vary by cabin type

Celebrity automatically adds gratuities to guests' accounts, an additional thank you to employees who work very hard to make your cruise vacation special. The amounts are: 

• $18 USD per person per day for Inside, Ocean View, and Veranda staterooms

• $18.50 USD per person, per day for Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms  

• $23.00 per person per day for guests of The Retreat.  

This is separate from the 20% gratuity that will be added to all beverages, mini bar purchases, and beverage packages. Celebrity has noted that gratuities are distributed to dining, bar, and culinary services staff, stateroom attendants, and other hotel services teams.

19.  Rotate between themed main dining rooms

While only offered on the Edge series of ships, one of the most significant changes Celebrity has made is the separation of the main dining rooms into four different themed venues. Cyprus, Cosmopolitan, Tuscan, and Normandie offer specialties as well as classics such as steak, chicken, and shrimp and signature dishes.

Being smaller than a standard main dining room, these themed dining rooms have more of a specialty dining feel and offer some mouth-watering options. Before you book the pricier specialty dining venues, you may want to give them a try. Normandie, in particular, is well known for its beef tenderloin dish, among other gourmet items on its menu. 

20. Leave some things at home

There are a few items that are prohibited on Celebrity ships for the safety of the guests and the smooth operation of the vessel. Guests cannot bring an iron or steamer onboard the ship, but they do offer laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing services for an additional fee. This can be arranged through the cabin attendant.

Other things to leave home include anything that generates heat or has open flames, like candles, hot plates, coffee makers, or kettles. Curling and flats irons are okay. Extension cords, illegal drugs (including marijuana), knives, and other weapons aren't allowed as well. Although wine is permitted, hard alcohol and beer are sadly not. 

21. You can use your Celebrity drink and wi-fi packages at Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay 

A private island in the Bahamas is quite an exciting addition to any sunny Caribbean itinerary, and Celebrity has recently announced that it will be visiting Royal Caribbean’s popular Perfect Day at CocoCay. This is great for families as well as adults who want a day in the sun. The island has a waterpark, a lively Oasis Lagoon pool, as well as tons of laid-back beaches, and the stylish Coco Beach Club that features an infinity pool, lobster for lunch, and incredible over-the-water bungalows. 

Celebrity passengers visiting for the day can use both their drink and wi-fi packages while on the island, which has a number of great bars and complimentary food venues. 

22. Watch out for gift card limitations 

Gift cards have become increasingly popular, a great present for that hard-to-buy person on your list. Celebrity gift cards are available in increments of $25, $50, $100, $250, and $500, providing a wide range of options. 

There is a catch, though. Gift cards can only be applied toward new bookings. They cannot be used to pay for any ship board charges, including but not limited to gift shop purchases, casino debts, shore excursions, or gratuities. For those wanting to give a more flexible gift, onboard credit can be purchased for a cruise at the Celebrity Store on their website. 

23. Prepaid gratuities are no longer included in the all-inclusive packages

Celebrity gained a lot of praise from cruisers for its all-inclusive package, making for a stress-free vacation thanks to a number of included benefits like drinks, wi-fi, and gratuities. However,  the cruise line has recently announced that they are removing prepaid gratuities from these packages. Cruisers will need to make sure to budget accordingly. 

Any new booking after October 4, 2023, will be subject to these new exclusions. Thankfully, it does apply to current bookings.

This is a significant change that cruisers might not realize when booking, especially if they have had the all-inclusive package in the past. This change will add to the cost of a cruise, especially for Retreat guests, who will now pay $23 per day per person.  

24. Download the Celebrity App 

Don’t wait until onboard; download the Celebrity App prior to the cruise to check out information like menus and events. Checking in and the muster drill can be quickly done on the app. Another great bonus is that the app can also be used to keep in touch with fellow cruisers with a free chat feature. 

Once onboard, the app provides a wealth of information on activities, events, excursions, and announcements, as well as keeps up to date on onboard spending. Some ships, such as the Edge series of ships, allow passengers to control their stateroom via their phone, including the TV, lighting, temperature, and window shades. It can be downloaded through the app store or Google Play. 

25. Celebrity’s buffets are scaled back in the evenings 

Something a little surprising, but Celebrity’s buffet offering is paired down during dinner, in comparison to a much more extensive lunchtime offering. For those who love the full-size buffets on ships such as Royal Caribbean, be prepared for a different style of evening buffets. This isn’t to say that the food is not good; it is, and in fact, Celebrity is well known for their top not-cruise, and their buffets have a number of stellar dishes. 

This new change was introduced earlier this year, with staff explaining that it was to prevent food waste. With so many guests heading to the main dining room and specialty restaurants, the Oceanview Café is not busy enough to demand such a large offering. For those with picky eaters in your group, you may want to head to the main dining room or consider specialty venues. 

26. Basic wi-fi is only available as part of all-included packages 

Celebrity offers its guests two options to connect to the internet:  basic and premium wi-fi. The lowest-priced option, the basic wi-fi allows passengers to browse the web, send emails, and text family and friends via select messaging apps. 

However, Celebrity has recently made a change, whereby this value option is only available when purchased as part of eligible “All Included” rates. It can no longer be purchased separately, either before or during the cruise. This all-included rate also includes the classic drink package and can add several hundred dollars to the cost of the cruise fare. 

27. There is no self-serve laundry onboard 

For guests who are on a longer trip or have some younger, messy guests in their traveling party and are in search of laundry, there are limited options. Celebrity provides laundry and dry cleaning services on a per-item basis for suits, dresses, and more casual items. There are no self-serve facilities, unfortunately. 

As with most cruise lines, guests cannot bring an iron or steamer on board; however, the cruise line does offer pressing services (priced by item) with a 4-item special of $25.00. Many cruisers hang up wrinkly clothes right away in the bathroom, letting the steam of the shower do its magic. There is also Downy Wrinkle Release, which works wonders. They have smaller, travel-size bottles, which are perfect for a cruise. ,

28. Upgrade your cabin for less 

For those guests who are interested in upgrading your cabin, Celebrity has their Move UP Program that allows guests to bid on an upgrade. You can log in to the website to determine if your cruise is eligible and review the stateroom options. You can bid on more than one room and will only be charged for the first two people for the room you win. 

It is a good idea to check out the current price for the cabin when making a bid to ensure it is worth the money. There are a couple of important caveats to consider when trying this program. Once the bid is accepted, your card will be charged immediately, and the upgrade amount paid is final and non-refundable. You have no choice in location. 

29. Board early when possible 

Once check-in is complete,  Celebrity provides its guests with a time frame for arrival at the ship. The earlier you check-in online, the earlier your port-assigned port arrival time will be. Getting onboard earlier means your vacation starts earlier, and you can also get any must-dos out of the way, like booking specialty dining.

This does not mean you can show up whenever you want, though. If you arrive several hours before your assigned time or even before current passengers have disembarked, you may end up waiting, in some cases, outside. Conversely, give yourself plenty of time to get to the port, and it is highly recommended to not fly in on the day of the cruise, given the issues with flight cancelations of late. 

30. Pick your cabin carefully 

For those of you who are light sleepers who don’t ever want to hear your neighbors watching TV, or the annoying sounds of pulsating music, it is a good idea to look at the floor plans carefully to get the best cabin possible. The Celebrity website provides deck plans for each ship with venues and cabins clearly marked. It is a good idea to look at what is above, below, and beside the stateroom you are considering.

Adjoining rooms and unobstructed views are something to consider as well. For example, on Celebrity’s newest Edge series of ships, the Magic Carpet moves up and down along the side of the ship. This can mean that the platform passes by cabins, with the ability to see in, especially if the curtains/shades are open. Additionally, people who are prone to seasickness do better on the lower decks and in the middle of the ship. Avoiding the front (bow) and rear of the ship.

31. Drop off your carry-on in your cabin 

One very nice perk of sailing with Celebrity Cruises is the ability to quickly stop in at your cabin on embarkation day to drop off your carry-on luggage. This is something that is not ordinarily common on many other cruise lines but is a really nice touch. 

Sometimes, even small bags can weigh you down while navigating the ship, getting lunch, and balancing that all-important first cocktail. This can be even trickier with excess baggage. A quick drop-off (while the crew gets things ready) is a great way to start a cruise and lessen the load. 

32. Book flights with Celebrity (for peace of mind) 

An option that many cruisers value is the ability to book their airfare with Celebrity. This provides peace of mind, knowing that they will handle any flight disruptions and delays. This is very important in this day and age with constant aviation disruptions, which can wreak havoc. In fact, Celebrity promises that If your flight is changed or canceled, they will help you find a seat on a new flight or even meet the ship at the next available port.

It can also help with cash flow management as flights do not need to be paid until the final cruise payment, unlike regular bookings that require immediate payment.

33. Try older ships to save money

Celebrity has gotten a lot of fanfare for its innovative Edge series of ships, which have reimagined cruise ships in the best of ways. But don’t ignore some of the veteran ships of the fleet, many of which have been modernized and often come at a lower cruise fare cost. 

The cruise line’s modernization program, “revolutionized” as they call it, has a budget of $500 million for updates to the entire fleet, which includes new spaces, the addition of the Retreat Area, updated restaurants and bars, as well as cabins, casino, spas and Retreat Area (suite-only area). Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Summit are two of the ships that have gone through the process. This means that passengers get to enjoy updated ships, with oftentimes lower prices than the newer ships in the fleet. 

34. Get the muster drill out of the way early 

One of the best updates to cruising has been the addition of a virtual muster drill whereby guests can watch a video to learn about all the safety rules and regulations for their cruise. This can easily be done on your phone in less than five minutes; in fact, many passengers complete it while waiting to board. Then, once onboard, just a quick drop-in at the muster location, and it's all done. 

Although you don’t need an internet package to complete it once onboard, you will need access to wi-fi to download the Celebrity app, which is best to do at home.

35. Review Celebrity’s cancelation policy 

When booking and paying off a cruise, it is really important to understand the terms and conditions associated with this purchase. For example, if you book a non-refundable cruise and want to cancel, you will lose your deposit and a portion of the payment, depending on how long until the cruise. 

For example, within 30 days, guests are not eligible to receive any money back, which is why insurance is so important. If you are sick or you miss the cruise due to a delayed flight, the cruise line will not refund you. Guests can purchase insurance directly from Celebrity, in addition to numerous other independent companies, some of which cover transportation delays, medical issues, or cancel for any reason. 

36. Photo packages can’t be purchased post-cruise 

A photo package can be a fantastic way to capture all those wonderful cruise memories. Many love getting pictures done on formal nights when they are dressed and look great. Also, it is an opportunity to get family pictures in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. 

Often a disappointment to many, pictures and packages cannot be purchased post-cruise, so it is important to make sure this is booked if this is a must-have for you and your family. 

37. Take advantage of embarkation day offers

Although most things like wi-fi and drink packages are cheaper when purchased pre-cruse, there are some embarkation specials to watch out for. Specialty dining, spa packages, and services are among the most popular and can be a fantastic add-on to a cruise vacation. 

Before rushing into purchasing these extras, it is a good idea to make sure of any restrictions. Some deals are only valid on sea days or shorter than a standard service. Overall, it can be a great way to start the cruise and save some money at the same time. 

38. Book your next cruise before you disembark

The end of a cruise can be a sad occasion for most, with cruisers feeling no rush to get back to reality. A great way to get over this and save money is to book your next cruise while still onboard. 

With its Future Cruise Vacations Program, Celebrity offers its guests the best offer available, as well as current promotions such as extra onboard credit. There are two options for this program. The first is the Book Now Program, where guests select their itinerary and dates and receive up to $500 in onboard credit. The other option – Book Later Program, allows guests to reserve a sailing, with the option to pick up a cruise within 6 months. With this option, passengers will receive up to $500 in onboard credit. 

39. Check your onboard account often

There are plenty of ways to keep track of spending while onboard, and while this can be a not-so-fun part of the day, it is best to keep tabs on your bill. Thanks to Celebrity’s app, this is a quick process that can be done in seconds. Alternatively, you can visit guest services and get a printout of the bill. 

Sometimes mistakes happen, or your kids charge something you are unaware of. Whatever the issue, it is best to keep on top of it. It is far easier to pop into guest services while onboard instead of dealing with an issue once home. 

40. Enjoy free room service

Everyone loves a free perk, and starting the day off with breakfast on your balcony is heavenly. Passengers receive complimentary room service on Celebrity ships. In particular, guests can enjoy a continental breakfast, which is available e from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day of the cruise except disembarkation day. Outside of these hours, room service has a fee of $9.95*, plus a 20% gratuity will automatically be added to your check.

For guests staying in the Retreat, room service is complimentary. Celebrity top-end suites, in addition to Zenith Captain Club members, receive complimentary room service 24 hours a day.

41. Cruise off-season 

Sailing off-season, or shoulder season as it is commonly referred to, is one of the best ways to save money and a great time to cruise. Early January and fall can be great times to travel, especially when kids go back to school. 

Celebrity offers a vast array of cruises, with lots of choices every month. One great itinerary to take advantage of during the off-season is cruising to the Mediterranean during the winter months. With exotic ports in Egypt and Israel as well as Spain, it is a spectacular cruise. Another bonus is that there are far fewer crowds during these months, which makes seeing famous sites a lot more manageable. 

42. Bring a reusable water bottle 

There are a lot of great reasons to bring our own water bottle on a cruise. Save money by skipping pricey bottled water, being good to the environment, and staying well hydrated are some of the top reasons. It is always a good idea to add some nice cold water to the mix while sipping cocktails in the sun. 

This is also a great option when going onshore and unsure about the cost and quality of local water. Some bottles even have filters to clean water-borne illnesses or bacteria, getting rid of E. coli. No need to worry about local water when doing an excursion for a day. 

43. Be ready to cruise 

Around 45 days before your cruise, check-in will become available, and it’s a good idea to do this as soon as possible to secure an early boarding time. Earlier on the ship means you get your vacation started sooner!  Check-in is a fairly quick process but does require appropriate identification on hand to upload details to the system.

When that magical day finally arrives and you get to the ship, make drop-off seamless by printing your luggage tags ahead of time.  Porters have blank luggage tags at the port, but it is a good idea to print them ahead of time and ensure they are well fastened to your bag. Many people use plastic holders to protect them, so the names and stateroom are clearly legible. In addition to this, staple them on, and be sure to give your porter a tip. 

44. Try a guaranteed stateroom to save money 

When booking a cruise, Celebrity provides its guests with the option to select from a number of cabin categories, including interior, ocean view, veranda, and suites, among other options. Once the room type has been picked, cruisers can choose between letting Celebrity assign them a room or self-selecting. 

What is the benefit of letting the cruise line assign a cabin? The answer is money. This option can save hundreds of dollars off the total cruise fare. There is a catch, however. You may end up in a cabin with an obstructed view or in a less desirable area of the ship, like under a nightclub. 

45. Plan to arrive a day ahead when flying to catch your cruise

This is one of the most important tips for getting on a cruise. Fly in the day before. There have been countless stories of guests missing their cruise due to flight delays, and unfortunately, it has become a reality for traveling these days. The last thing anyone wants is to start their vacation by stressing out whether they will make it to the port on time. Come the day before, get a hotel, and relax by the pool. 

In addition to this, for those driving a good distance, again, it is best to allow for lots of time. Accidents appear out of nowhere, which can clog up roads for hours. If the worst case happens, the ship will not wait and not be reimbursed for the lost cruise. 

46. Pay attention to ship time

Cruise ships sail on their own time, “ship time," as it is called. All of the activities, entertainment, embarkation, and disembarkation are according to this nautical clock. Many cruise ships sail across a number of time zones while traveling, and the cruise line will advise its passengers if and when they need to adjust their clocks. Sometimes, this aligns with local time, and sometimes it does not. 

This can be confusing at times, especially after a few drinks and you misread the clock at the local bar. Everyone has seen pier runners on social media as they race down to the dock, screaming at the cruise ship to wait for them. You do not want to be one of those people. If you have your phone on roaming, it will adjust to local time, which can add to the confusion. Set your phone to not change by putting it on airplane mode or use an old-fashioned, offline analog watch. 

47. Don’t bother bringing a towel 

This is a frequent question for many but no, guests do not need to bring a towel when packing for their Celebrity cruise. With all the other things that you need to pack, plenty of clothes and shoes, as well as leaving room for souvenirs, a bulky towel is not necessary. 

The cruise line has a number of places throughout the ship to get beach towels to bring on shore for beach days, as well as regular towels in the stateroom. Another plus to sailing with Celebrity is that there is no signup process to get a towel; you just help yourself with no fear of being charged if you leave it by accident on your pool chair. 

48. Bring some cash

It is a good idea to bring some money on your Celebrity cruise, but many people are not sure how much. While most places accept credit cards, cash can be better when dealing with small vendors in ports. Often, for a couple of dollars for some fun souvenirs, they won't take credit cards. It's also good for tipping in a taxi. 

Onboard, cash is the best way to show your appreciation for hard-working staff. Many guests bring small bills for bar staff, cabin staff, waiters, or anyone else who makes the cruise special. 

49. Join a FB group for your sailing (or other message boards) 

There are numerous message boards and Facebook groups that have pages for specific sailings for each cruise line. This is a great way to get information and meet other guests who will be on your cruise. Many times, they organize information events and meet-ups, as well as other activities once you are all onboard. 

This is also a good opportunity to share ideas about excursions, what’s great to do onboard, as well as other trip details like hotels and transportation to the port. 

50. Bring must-haves from home 

Although there are a number of shops onboard Celebrity ships, must-have items like sunscreen can be quite expensive, and the range of products is limited. Your favorite shampoo, late-night snack, or protein bars for a short excursion will probably not be available on the ship. 

Packing all you need is particularly important for families with kids. Make sure to include diapers, your kids' favorite pre-packaged snacks, and everything that your kids need to feel comfortable. Some of these items should be included in your carry-on, as it might be hours until your luggage is delivered to your cabin. Bathing suites are must-haves for many who want to enjoy the fun right away. Don't forget to include them in your carry-on!

Packing for your cruise can feel overwhelming when you try to bring everything you think you might need during your vacation.

Regardless of if you're a first-timer or a veteran, it's tough to know what to pack.

It's my experience that a really good cruise packing list helps a lot, because it can assist with being prepared for cruise line dress codes, what to wear on shore, evening wear, and everything you may need in your cabin too.

Planning ahead can be a great time-saver, as no one wants to use valuable vacation time doing detours while in port in a search for a forgotten item. Or missing out on a great activity, such as a galley tour, because you don't have closed-toe shoes. 

After many years of cruising, here is the list of important things you should pack for any cruise ship vacation. I hope with this list, you can avoid common cruise packing mistakes and be ready for an amazing trip!

Luggage

Before you start packing, it is always a good idea to make sure you have the right luggage. Royal Caribbean does not have a specific limit on the number of suitcases. For most, this will be guided by transportation options, especially flying, which has restrictions on both the size and weight of bags. 

When you arrive at the cruise terminal, you will hand your larger bags over to a porter, and they will be delivered to your cabin later on embarkation day. 

For that reason, you will need to bring a manageable carry-on bag, which should have room enough for important valuables, required documents, and anything else you need right away, such as flip-flops and a bathing suit. 

If you are bringing on wine or champagne, this will also need to be packed in your carry-on. 

Daytime clothes and accessories

As with most trips, clothing is going to be your primary focus and take up the bulk of your suitcase.

The total number of outfits that you are going to want to bring depends on the length and type of cruise. There are no self-service laundry facilities onboard, but washing, pressing, and dry-cleaning services are offered (prices vary per item). It is best to plan clothes for the number of days plus a return home outfit. Two outfits per day is a good rule of thumb (day and night).

For casual daywear, pack:

• T-shirts and/or tank tops
• Shorts
• Swimsuits and appropriate cover-up
• Sundresses
• Comfortable pair of flip-flops and/or sandals
• Jeans and pants
• Activewear/workout gear
• Clothes for onboard activities, such as the all-access ship tour, zip-lining, and rock climbing, which require closed-toe shoes
• Socks
• Sunglasses
• Hat
• Lanyard for SeaPass card

Evening clothes and accessories

For evening events, the dress code varies, but cruisers are less formal than they used to be. Many guests wear "smart casual" for formal night; Royal Caribbean's website explains the dress code to help with packing for evening wear. 

Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear, dress to impress: 

• Collared shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses, or pantsuits for women
• Jackets, sports coats, and blazers are snazzy for men 

Formal wear:   

• Suits and ties or tuxedos
• Cocktail dresses or evening gowns
• Don't forget a shawl, wrap, or light sweater. Some venues are cooler in the evenings. 

There are also fun theme nights, such as the White Party, 70s or 80s nights, etc. Also include: 

• Nicer shoes (heels, flats, loafers, etc.)
• Sleepwear
• Jewelry

Ports and excursions

Whether it is a beach day, bicycle tour, or snorkeling, there are a few things you should probably include for your port days.

It is always a good idea to keep valuables such as a phone and wallet safe when venturing out in ports. Cross-body bags with secure locks or a money belt are good options. It never hurts to stick an umbrella or rain ponchos in your bag in case any tropical showers pop up.

For general water/beach outings, consider packing:

• Mask and goggles
• Snorkel and fins
• Water shoes (where needed)
• Life jackets/flotation devices (especially for children)
• Waterproof phone carrier
• Towel clips (the ship provides towels)
• Beach bag
• Bug spray
• Sunscreen and lip balm
• Rain poncho
• Appropriate footwear 

Packing for Colder Climates

Cruising to colder climates, like Alaska, has become increasingly popular and requires different considerations for weather and activities.

The amount of rain and temperature can vary during an Alaskan cruise, so you should be prepared to keep warm and dry. Layered dressing is the way to go in this climate. Here are some suggestions:

• Shirts and T-shirts for inner layers
• Warm layers, such as fleece pullovers
• Waterproof jacket
• Suitable closed-toe shoes
• Boots for hiking where needed
• Gloves, hat and scarf
• Binoculars
• Water-resistant backpack/cross-body bag for onshore
• Insect repellant is especially important for Alaska
• Hand warmer packs

Location-specific requirements

The cruise planner will list important details for excursions. For example, in Rome, there is no access to the Vatican or St. Peter’s Basilica with exposed shoulders or knees. This applies to both men and women.

For those who love camouflage clothing, it is important to note that it is illegal in some Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica, Barbados, and St. Lucia, as it is reserved for military use. Some non-camo options should be included when packing.

Sunscreen is a must and cruisers should be aware that some destinations require reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the health of their coral reefs. These products don’t contain harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone, octocrylene, and octinoxate. Reef-safe sunscreens are readily available in popular drugstores and other retailers. Ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Aruba, and Hawaii are some of the locations that require these types of sunscreens.

Kid stuff

Traveling with younger kids can definitely add more to your packing list. Beyond the standard clothes suggested for adults, consider including:

• Diapers – pack plenty of extra ones, including regular and swim
• Baby wipes
• Rash cream
• Kids' medicines
• Extra plastic bags for wet items
• Extra clothes
• Light blanket
• Stroller
• Car seat where necessary
• Bottles/sippy cups
• Baby food and formula
• Beach toys
• Activities like coloring, stickers, books, etc.
• Inflatable bathtub to place in the shower for younger children

Also, make sure that you download any favorite shows and games on tablets or phones prior to boarding the ship!

Toiletries

When it comes to toiletries, the cruise line only provides soap and shampoo; many people prefer to bring their own. Here are some of the main things to consider bringing:

• Shampoo and conditioner, and other hair products.
• Skincare products
• Makeup
• Eye care – glass cleaners and contact solution
• Dental – toothbrush and toothpaste (and floss for the 1% that actually do as their dentist tells them)
• Curling / flat irons (cabins have blow dryers)
• Shaving products
• Brush, comb, elastics/ hair accessories
• Deodorant
• Nail products
• Shoe rack to help with organization
• Sewing kit

Tip: For some reason, travel sized products can be pricey despite their size. Reusable travel bottles are a good solution, especially if you don’t need a large quantity of product.

First Aid and Medications

While some items can be purchased onboard, it is a good idea to have a ready-made first aid kit for easy access during the cruise. The last thing you want to do is spend time running around in port to find something,

Unfortunately, some people suffer from seasickness, but there are a number of well-known remedies such as Gravol, wrist bands and patches.

Here are some common medications/ first aid items to pack:

• Sea sickness remedies
• Pain and allergy products
• After-burn care (aloe), lip balm (SPF), and bug spray
• Anti-itch cream/ hydrocortisone
• First aid items such as band-aids and anti-bacterial ointment
• Upset stomach medications
• Cold medicine
• Eye drops

Valuables/Carry-on

The last bag to pack is your carry-on. Once the luggage is dropped off at the terminal, this should contain everything needed until the cabin is ready.

• Money (small denominations for tips/ foreign currency)
• Credit cards
• Cell phone and charger
• Tablet/ computer
• Headphones/earbuds
• Camera
• Required medication (at least 3 days extra worth)
• Eyewear (glasses, sunglasses)
• Contacts
• Comfort items such as gum and mints
• Phone battery (can’t be packed)
• Masks (where required)
• Hand sanitizer and wipes
• Pen/highlighter

Although most people keep documents on their phone, I always feel better having hard copies as well just in case something happens to my phone. Documents to consider:

• Boarding passes
• Country-specific entry requirements (e.g. visa)
• Hotel reservations
• Transportation details
• Insurance details
• A list of key numbers and reservations
• SetSail passes
• Luggage tags
• Excursion details

Tip: Passports applications are taking longer right now, so do keep this in mind if you are traveling to a destination that requires one. It is important to check the expiry date as most countries require passports to be valid for at least 6 months.

Drinks and Beverages

Royal Caribbean allows guests to bring a specific quantity of drinks onboard. This can be a great money saver or is nice if you have a specific beverage you really love. 

According to Royal Caribbean, each guest can bring one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne as long as they are of legal drinking age.

Guests can also bring non-alcoholic beverages up to 12 standard (17 oz.) cans, bottles, or cartons per stateroom. Milk and distilled water brought on for infant, medical, or dietary use are permitted. 

Corkscrews will be provided for guests to enjoy their drinks in their stateroom, and if guests wish to enjoy their wine or champagne in our dining or bar venues, a corkage fee will be applied.

Guests who purchase alcohol bottles onboard, in a port-of-call, or bring more than the two permitted bottles on boarding day, will have their items safely stored by the ship. These bottles will be returned on the last day onboard for enjoyment once home.

Outlets

Royal Caribbean ships have standard plugs, and most Caribbean ports have the same electrical outlets as those in the United States. However, for your pre- and post-stay for international cruises, you may require adaptors and converters.

Adaptors are inexpensive to purchase but do vary by destination, so check what is required for your travel destination. 

In addition, some items may need a converter that, as the name implies, converts it to the proper voltage. This is more likely to be an issue for items like flat or curling irons. These can be much more expensive, so best to do your research ahead of time to determine what is needed.

Miscellaneous

Although there is plenty of food and drinks on the cruise, there are times when it is helpful to have a pre-packaged snack on hand. Protein and granola bars can be great options, as well as favorites like goldfish or cheerios that can calm down a tired toddler.

Other items to consider:

• A night light, as cabins can be dark
• Earplugs
• Reading material – some people love reading on a Kindle or their tablet, but for those that don't remember to bring a book or magazine
• Flashlight
• Straws
• Towel clips to keep your towel from blowing away
• Fan, but must be cordless (can plug into USB)
• Multi-outlet USB charger (non-surge)
• Magnetic hooks
• Ziplock bags
• Water bottle
• Wrinkle release spray
• Watch
• Laundry bag
• Prepackages snacks (protein bars, kids treats)

E-Packing

This is a growing category that I have added to my packing list. With more and more apps, I have to give more thought to what I need to have on my phone for travel, what I consider e-packing.

Some people like to print out everything, which is a good strategy as well, but for some things, it is best to have an app. 

• Royal Caribbean's app - you will need this onboard to get information on activities, your schedule, book entertainment, etc.
• Airline and transportation apps
• Boarding passes
• Excursion details/tickets
• Country-specific requirements like the UK's ETA app, must be completed prior to arrival

I also create a specific travel folder for all of my travel-related emails, such as transportation details and cruise planner purchases.

What to leave at home

There is a whole list of items that can’t be brought onboard, so it's best to know about this ahead of time and not waste space or risk losing them.

There is a detailed list of prohibited items on Royal Caribbean's website, and among many are items that heat up, which can cause a fire hazard on the ship. Anything that could interfere with the safe operation of the ship or the safe and secure environment of guests and crew are prohibited.

Here are some common items that the cruise line does not permit onboard:

• Beer, hard liquor and spirits
• Marijuana (even if medical products), CBD Oil / CBD Products
• Irons and steamers
• Kettle, coffee maker or hot plate
• Candles
• Any other device that produces heat
• Baby Monitors
• Extension cords
• Perishable foods and meats
• Hookahs and water hookah pipes
• Weapons including pepper spray
• Toy gun replicas
• Hoverboards
• HAM radios

I am just off an eleven day adventure on the Celebrity Edge, sailing far south to the Southern Caribbean and the tip of South America. It was a great adventure, and I even got re-married while onboard.

Innovative, revolutionary, and bold are all words used to describe the first in the new class of ships from Celebrity Cruises, a vast departure from the Solstice class or, for that matter, any other cruise ships out there.

Our extended cruise vacation gave me plenty of time to try out tons of food venues, entertainment, bars, and other fun stuff on the ship.

Having never sailed on an Edge series ship, there was lots to explore. Here is what it was like to sail on the Celebrity Edge on an epic 11 day cruise to the Panama Canal. 

Overview of Celebrity Edge

We booked the Edge more than a year and a half in advance. The Panama Canal itinerary was a big draw, and we were eager to try this class of ships.

Previously, we mainly sailed on Royal Caribbean's Oasis class ships. At 129,500 gross tonnage and a capacity of 2,918, the Celebrity Edge is significantly smaller than Wonder of the Seas, which tops out at 235,600, over 80% bigger, with 5,734 guests. So I wasn’t sure how this ship would feel in terms of space.

The ship is quite different in design from any other ships I have sailed on. I missed the open center design, a signature feature of Oasis-class ships, but there were plenty of beautiful spaces like Eden and a rooftop patio onboard.

I was advised by the crew that we were sailing near capacity for our voyage, and the ship did feel a tad busy on sea days. On a few occasions when it was windy outside, it was hard to find a spot in the solarium.

And, of course, there were chair hogs as usual. I think whoever solves this issue deserves a Nobel peace prize.

My first impression was that the ship was quite modern in design. I don’t necessarily gravitate toward this style. Some of the design elements onboard puzzled me, and I wondered how they would age with time. The chandelier that anchors the Grand Plaza looks like a giant crown gone crazy. I was not sure what to make of this supersized light or whether I even liked it, but it was undoubtedly symbolic of the bold design on the ship.

Cabin

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we booked a Sky Suite. We were mid-ship on Deck 10, which proved to be a great location, and the cabin was thoughtfully designed. It was evident that the design team carefully considered how each space would be used, and the flow was excellent.

Sky suites run around 320 square feet, which is plenty of space for two. The finishings were top notch, and the bathroom, in particular, was designed well with a separate water closet. It has one large sink with two faucets and a large shower with a tub.

We had tons of closet space and could easily store our suitcases under the bed. The room also included upgraded bedding, bathroom products, robes, slippers, an umbrella, and binoculars, but no coffee maker. Our cabin attendant and butler provided superb service throughout our 11 day journey.

The balcony was a good size with two chairs. I would have loved a lounger, a very minor point. On busy sea days, I did enjoy sitting there, and it allowed for some amazing scenic views when we passed through the Panama Canal. 

Dining Venues

Food is a major part of cruising, and we ate very well onboard the Celebrity Edge.

Oceanview Café, the main buffet, is pretty much similar to other cruise ships. It offered a wide selection of choices and was busy in the morning, lunch, and sea days. There was a large amount of seating, including some outside, and I never had a problem finding a spot. I liked how they had a separate area for pizza and ice cream, which diverted people from the main food area.

We did venture to the Fine Cut Steakhouse onboard. The menu was incredibly similar to Chops on Royal Caribbean, which we have enjoyed thoroughly in the past. Our food was delicious, and the portions were quite large. The restaurant opens to the Grand Plaza area but lacks a little ambiance.

As part of our Sky Suite, we had access to Luminae. It is quite a large space, well decorated in tones of red, which seemed all the more appropriate on Valentine’s Day. They don’t take reservations, just walk-ins, and we never had a problem getting a table.

The service was excellent, and we enjoyed the varied menu throughout our cruise. If you are a foodie, they have dishes designed by famed chef Daniel Boulud.

Main Dining Room 

One of the most significant differences on the Edge is the separation of the main dining rooms into four different themed venues that look like specialty restaurants. Cyprus, Cosmopolitan, Tuscan, and Normandie offer specialties as well as classics such as steak, chicken, and shrimp, as well as signature dishes.

Being smaller than a standard main dining room, I found the restaurants to have more of a specialty dining feel, especially Normandie, which was a bit whimsical in décor with rose colored accents, and some French style chairs that looked like a French King could have used.

I was also impressed with the food, including a a mouth watering beef tenderloin in pastry. It was so good that we went twice, and it actually became quite busy by the end of the cruise as word of mouth got out about its delicious cuisine. Based on this experience, I would recommend skipping the steakhouse and heading to Normandie to satisfy your beef craving.

We also tried Cyprus twice and Tuscan, Both were good, and I enjoyed the freshly made pasta at Tuscan.

Separating the dining rooms into smaller spaces is an exciting idea, and I would say the only downside is that you don't get to know your wait staff as well.

On my previous cruise on Celebrity Equinox, I had excellent wait staff in the main dining room, and toward the end of the cruise, they knew my tastes and preferences and made excellent recommendations for food and wine. I missed this on the Edge.

Eden

Eden is a unique venue. A fine dining restaurant, bar, a spot for casual bites, and a music venue. It is a three-level, multifunctional space at the back of the ship.

A tropical inspired oasis, it is home to what many consider the best restaurant on the ship – Eden. The restaurant was hands down the best meal I ate all cruise. A 7-course tasting meal with impeccable service. My only complaint is that there was too much food! If you only do one specialty restaurant on Edge, please do Eden.

The acoustic music was terrific and well suited to the serene environment. The splashes of green, wicker chairs and plants made you feel like you were in a jungle on a cruise ship.

Entertainment

The Grand Plaza, which opens up from Deck 3-5, is definitely the main hub on Edge. There is a stage in the middle of the Martini Bar, with lots of music throughout the day. Each evening it hosted a lively show where the bartenders' twirled bottles in the air and then jumped up on the counter and poured a magical concoction into a glass. I was impressed with the live music and the diversity of songs throughout the eleven days.  

It is a lively area throughout the day, and many people sit around and enjoy coffee from Café al Bacio on Deck 5. It serves top not specialty coffees and European-style pastries and desserts. The lounge around popular cafe was always full, and people seemed to love it.

I should note that the coffees are extra or complimentary with a drink package, but the pastries are free.

Even though we were on the ship for eleven days, we did not get to all the events we had planned. I did enjoy trivia and loved the music in the Eden many nights. We did not make it to any shows. We did want to, but after a leisurely dinner, we often chose the options of a post-dinner drink and lively music. It is one of my favorite things.

We attended a captain’s talk while onboard, where we learned more information about the ship and the Panama Canal. We showed up about 10 minutes before the event; apparently, everyone else on the ship did. It was standing room only as we listened to Captain Costas’ funny yet informative session.

Floating Art Gallery

The ship's architectural elements and overall design is nothing like I have seen on any other cruise ship. I was blown away by the number of art pieces, including paintings and sculptures, throughout the ship. This was unexpected and may seem trivial, but I still think about post cruise.

One of the most talked about (and I would say controversial) pieces on the ship was the large scale installation in a hallway on the way to Eden. It was quite a discussion point amongst passengers in our Facebook sailing group. I don't know that pictures do it justice, but it was incredibly dark, with large sculpture pieces that looked like contorted Oscar statues.

The most unusual sounds played as you walked through, which may have been marine in nature, too hard to make out. I walked through it numerous times and remained both puzzled and intrigued.

There were numerous sculptural pieces throughout the ship that held my eye, including a White Pearl piece, which seemed to be a play on the Black Pear from the famous Pirate of the Caribbean movies. There were also wooden sculptures of people, which seemed to stare at me, despite having no faces. Excellent pieces and thought provoking, exactly what art should be, and most unexpected on a cruise ship.

Other fun stuff

There were several upscale shops on the ship, all with standard ones like Tiffany. Although I saw a beautiful watch in Bulgari, by the name alone, I knew it was out of my price range and did not venture in. I can't recall seeing anyone in there or Cartier during the cruise.

I first thought the Magic Carpet would be a bit gimmick, but it was much more. Another multipurpose space -  a bar, a restaurant, and a launching point for tenders. On one of the sea days, we were lucky enough to score a seat there. It has the perfect amount of shade and incredible views. For my next cruise, I would love to try dinner on it.  

I am not much of a gambler, but my husband did enjoy blackjack in the casino, and we met friends for a drink in the Casino Bar, which was often not busy. Big shoutout to Celebrity for a smoke-free casino. I love it.

We happened to be cruising on Valentine's Day, and everyone who wanted was invited to participate in a vow renewal, a fleet wide event. It looked like at least 100 people participated, and we were treated to a glass of bubbly afterward. I even received a certificate before the end of the cruise to reconfirm my marital status. Nice touch, Celebrity.

Itinerary

One of the best perks of sailing on an Edge class series is the size of the ship. Big enough to offer all the modern amenities you expect in a cruise ship but small enough to fit through the Panama Canal. 

I wasn’t expecting the canal to be so quiet. As we entered, I was surprised to see so much jungle around it, and I could hear birds calling out as we entered before 7 am. I had envisioned lots of people working frantically, with machines buzzing around. Not so. A few people onshore, but otherwise exceptionally calm and well organized. Once through the locks, we entered Gatun Lake, which was greenish in color and surprisingly beautiful. The ship was buzzing the whole time we went through the locks, with people traveling around to get different views and enjoy the sites.

We also sailed to the ABC islands, although we were delayed in arriving in Aruba due to a medical emergency. We rented a golf cart in Bonaire, which is an island like none other I have visited in the Caribbean. Such diverse topography and remote in areas. We also visited Curacao, where we wandered around Willemstad having great Dutch coffee and visiting the local museum. Cartagena, Columbia, was a vibrant port and full of contrast. Your first glimpses of the city are towering white high rises, which was very different than our tour of the old town, which was full of well preserved Spanish colonial buildings.

Ship tour 

One of the best things I did onboard was a ship tour. This has been something I always thought of doing, and I was well organized this time and booked it before we boarded. It is kind of genius that cruise lines charge you for this and that they sell out.

There were around 20 of us, and we ventured to the galley (of Normandie, which was a bonus). We visited one of the 40 storage rooms onboard, and apparently, around 2,000 bottles of wine were consumed each day. No wonder they needed so many store rooms.  We also visited the laundry room and the recycling areas. I am incredibly jealous of the ship’s folding machine, which was magical in pressing and putting sheets into beautiful squares.

One of the highlights of a ship tour is the bridge. I have previously visited a bridge on Royal Caribbean ships, and it was pretty similar on the Edge. Sparsely populated with only three people working, it was quite spacious and packed with modern technology and the smallest ship wheel you can imagine. Unfortunately, the Captain was not there, but the Chief Office did an excellent job of showing us around. All in all, this was a great highlight of the tour and a great way to spend some of the five sea days.

The Verdict

Celebrity has definitely pushed boundaries with the Edge. They have reimagined spaces and challenged some of the traditional cruise ship designs. The ship lived up to the hype by providing a well designed ship with great amenities, tasty food, and very good service. These are things we all want in a cruise vacation.

I am not sure I need all of the modern design for a great cruise, but the ship has tons of terrific amenities, and its size means it has a lot of possible itineraries. It will be interesting to see how dated the ship will look in another five years, as modern design changes rather quickly.

Eleven days is a significant amount of time that lets you explore and experience the ship, as well as fantastic ports. A genuinely relaxing cruise vacation. I can say with certainty that I would sail on the Celebrity Edge series again.

Packing for kids is a lot like any cruise packing list, but any parent will tell you that kids come with their own set of requirements and nuances you don't get when packing for just adults.

There are also some child specific items that you should bring, especially if you are traveling with the youngest of sailors.

Here’s what to make sure you pack for your next family cruise vacation.

Getting to your cruise  

Traveling with kids, especially younger ones, does call for additional consideration, even before you get on the ship. Whether you are flying or driving straight to the port, there are a few major items that you should pack:  

• Stoller – A stroller is a must have for young kids; however, you may not want to bring your large double stroller from home, as this can be tricky to navigate in the narrow hallways of a cruise ship or some port areas. Many people go for a cheaper umbrella stroller, something light and easy to carry and maneuver.
• Car Seat – While you don’t need one on the ship, some people like to bring theirs for excursions, especially not knowing what is available in port and the likelihood of taxis and buses having them. 
• Cruise paperwork – Like adults, kids need identification for their cruise, so don’t forget their set sail passes along with required ID, vaccine, or covid-testing requirements where needed. 

Travel requirements

Many parents have questions about what is acceptable identification for kids. For US citizens under 16, Royal Caribbean accepts either an original, notarized or certified copy of a birth certificate. A Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by DOS, or a Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services are also acceptable. The cruise line will not accept baptismal papers or hospital certificates of birth as a form of identification. 

Do your research, though, as some cruises require passports, such as those leaving for Alaska from Canada. In this case, a birth certificate won’t do.

Although most cruises no longer require pre-cruise Covid-19 testing, there are a few itineraries, such as Bermuda, Australia and transatlantic/ transpacific sailings, that still require them. It is best to consult the Royal Caribbean website for your specific sailing to see what exactly you need. 

Carry-on items

Once you are on the ship, with all the paperwork out of the way, you should have everything you need until your luggage arrives at your cabin. As with adults, kids need to pack for any activities as well as must haves such as glasses and prescription medication.

Make sure to bring a change of clothes, diapers, and any other immediate needs for your younger kids. A bathing suit, sandals, and a sun hat are all good to have. We can all get a little tired, especially if you travel far, so remember to add anything your kids may like such as their favorite stuffed animal or baby bottles, to help soothe an unhappy traveler.

It can be fun for kids to have their own backpacks to carry a few specialty things, like a toy. Or if they are teens, many want to bring their own phones and tablets. This, along with spending money, should be packed in a carry-on.

Clothes

How much to pack depends on the length and type of cruise. There are no self-service laundry facilities onboard but washing, pressing, and dry-cleaning services are offered (prices vary per item). The cruise line also offers wash and fold specials during sailings whereby guests can fill up a bag for the fixed amount of $34.99 per bag.

It is best to plan clothes for the number of days plus a return home outfit. Two outfits per day is a good rule of thumb (day and night) for adults. So you may want to increase this to at least one extra outfit, especially for younger kids.

Be sure to include:

• Clothes for having fun on the pool deck, such as a bathing suit, sundress, t-shirts and shorts. Tip: Since many kids spend lots of time in the water, it is a good idea to bring extra bathing suits (three at least). No one likes putting a wet bathing suit on.
• Sandals
• Jeans and pants
• Active wear, including running /walking shoes – especially for sports activities
• Pants and a sweater for chillier spots like the ice rink
• Don’t forget socks and underwear
• Pajamas
• Sun hat/ visor
• Packing cubes can be helpful in organizing clothes in your suitcase or for your cabin.

Evening for kids can run the full gamut, depending upon how formal your family wants to be: 

• Pants, jeans or leggings
• Nicer top, collared shirts
• Dresses
• Dress up shoes
• Suit and tie 

For cruises with colder itineraries, consider:

• Shirts and t-shirts for inner layers
• Warm layers, such as fleece pullovers
• Waterproof jacket
• Suitable closed-toe shoes
• Boots for hiking/walking where needed
• Gloves, hat and scarf

Baby specific items

Traveling with younger kids can definitely add more to your packing list. Beyond the standard clothes suggested, consider including:

• Diapers – pack plenty of extra ones, including regular and swim
• Baby and disinfectant wipes
• Rash cream
• Extra plastic bags for wet items
• Light blanket
• Bottles
• Baby food and formula
• Sippy cups

Excursions

Whether it’s a beach day, a bicycle tour, or snorkeling, there are a few things you should probably include for your port days.

Like adults, kids need comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and other items to make the best of their day. Don’t assume you can buy extra diapers when visiting ports.

For general water/ beach outings, consider kid sized/specific items such as : 

• Mask, goggles and snorkel
• Water shoes (where needed)
• Life jackets and flotation devices 
• Waterproof phone carrier
• UV swimsuit (for those who prefer)
• Sunscreen and lip balm
• Hat/sunglasses
• Collapsible silicone toys are a fantastic option for saving space in lieu of traditional bulky toys

Comfort items/ miscellaneous

After a busy day of fun, it is nice to take a break and relax in your cabin. Kids will feel better with some of their favorite comfort creatures from home. Cruise lines do provide pack and plays; just make sure to request them as soon as possible, as they are in limited supply. 

Other items to pack:

• A tablet with pre-downloaded movies/ games, as tv is limited onboard
• Bring a few toys, including their favorite stuffed animal
• Coloring supplies
• Books
• A nightlight – especially if you are in an inside cabin
• Many parents prefer a bath for young children. A small blow-up bathtub that can be placed in the shower during a cruise
• You may also want to bring your kid's favorite snack, like fish crackers or cheerios.
  • You can only bring non-perishable items, so no fruits or vegetables.
• Refillable water bottle
• A pack of cards
• Kids' shampoo and conditioner

With your family and all their stuff in a cruise cabin, it is a good idea to think about some organizational and storage techniques. Magnetic hooks and an over the door organizer, as well as ziploc bags for convenient storage, are all good options. 

First aid and medications

While some items can be purchased onboard, it is a good idea to have a ready made first aid kit for easy access during the cruise. The last thing you want to do is spend time running around in port to find something. Don't assume that there will be an adequate supply on the ship. Best to pick them up at the local drugstore pre-cruise; a pharmacist can assist with determining what is best for you.

Here are some common medications/ first aid items to pack:

• Pain and allergy products
• Seasickness meds
• After-burn care (aloe), lip balm (SPF), and bug spray
• Anti-itch cream/ hydrocortisone
• First aid items such as band-aids and anti-bacterial ointment
• Upset stomach medications
• Cold /flu medicine

In a new update yesterday, Royal Caribbean has announced some changes in protocols for guests traveling with cruises visiting or embarking in Canada and Barbados.

In an email to its travel partners, the cruise line highlighted new protocols for its customers, good news for many cruisers who had to endure the extra costs associated with testing and other entry paperwork.

Both the Canadian and Barbadian governments recently announced a number of updates to their Covid protocols as it relates to tourists. A welcome change for many, which has allowed cruise lines to modify their policies.

There are, however, no new updated protocols for Bermuda, which still requires pre-cruise testing and entry approval with a fee. 

Here is what cruisers need to know about the changes for cruises to Canada and Barbados.

Changes to cruises to Canada

Starting October 1, 2022, for sailings of 9 nights or less, Royal Caribbean is welcoming all guests, regardless of vaccination status, for cruises that embark, debark, or visit Canada. This is welcome news for cruisers leaving on New England sailings in the remainder of the year.  

Vaccination and testing

Royal Caribbean notes the following protocols based on vaccination status:

• Vaccinated guests, regardless of age, will no longer need to test for sailing lengths of 9 nights or less. And, boarding day tests are no longer required.
• Unvaccinated guests aged 5 and older must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days of the sail date. 
• Additionally, for sailings of 10 nights or more, all guests ages 5 years and older must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days of the sail date.

Despite the changes in protocols, the cruise line continues to recommend that guests be vaccinated against Covid-19. Noting that for those eligible, “ we recommend that guests joining us be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. While vaccination is not required, we kindly ask you disclose your status during check-in to ensure we maintain a highly vaccinated onboard population”.

Testing information

Royal Caribbean, in a major improvement for cruisers, is allowing guests to take advantage of at-home antigen tests; even unsupervised tests will satisfy this requirement for cruises to and from Canada.

Passengers must present proof of a negative test at boarding. This can be provided in the form of a printout, an email, or an app screen from the test provider. Additionally, guests can show a picture of their negative home test on their phone, or present the actual negative test itself.

ArriveCAN App

The ArriveCAN app was introduced by the Canadian government for cross-border travel during the pandemic. Travelers entering Canada had to complete the electronic form with health information and other details prior to arrival in Canada.

The Canadian government has announced that as of Effective October 1, 2022, completion of the ArriveCAN form is no longer required. As such, it is not a requirement for guests traveling to and from Canada as part of their cruise.

Although the government has said that it will be optional, and plans are to make it part of an advanced declaration form to speed up the process for those flying into Canada in the future, 

Current cruises that will be impacted by changes in 2022

This is good news for cruisers traveling on the remaining itineraries to Canada in 2022. Royal Caribbean has sailings running throughout October, including:

• 7-night cruise to Canada, leaving from Boston, Massachusetts, on Voyager of the Seas  
• 8-night Canada and New England Cruise leaving from Baltimore, Maryland on Enchantment of the Seas
• 9 night Canada and New England Cruise sailing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey on Adventure of the Seas

Changes to cruises from Barbados

For cruisers on or after October 1, Royal Caribbean is accepting all guests, regardless of vaccination status, back onboard for itineraries from Barbados. Royal Caribbean offers a number of cruises that originate in Bridgetown, Barbados in 2022 and the future. 

Vaccination and testing

For cruises out of Barbados, the requirements are as follows:

• Vaccinated guests, regardless of age, will no longer need to test for sailing lengths of 9 nights or less. And, boarding day tests are no longer required.

• Unvaccinated guests aged 5 and older must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days of our sail date. 

• Additionally, for sailings of 10 nights or more, all guests age 5 years and older must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 3 days of the sail date.

Barbados Customs and Immigration Form

All guests need to adhere to any entry requirements and complete the Barbados Customs and Immigration form within 72 hours of arrival in Barbados. The form can be completed in advance and once finished, a receipt will be emailed to passengers with a travel code.

Upcoming Barbados cruises impacted by changes

This will impact cruises with sailings out of Bridgetown, Barbados, including both the Rhapsody of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, which start running in November of this year.

Today, Royal Caribbean management participated in a discussion with travel agents, answering questions relating to special needs and accessibility while cruising.  

Ronald Pettit, Royal Caribbean’s Executive Disability Inclusion & Accessibility Officer, addressed several topics along with Renee Didier, Manager of the Sales Training Team.

Pettit has been with Royal Caribbean Group for over 16 years in varying positions and has led the cruise line as an industry leader in accessible cruise vacations. In the webinar today, Pettit elaborated on a number of Royal Caribbean’s practices in making the cruise experience more accessible.  

Here are some of the questions and answers from today’s session.

How much advance notice should we provide about a disability?

Ideally at the time of booking, but “no later than 30 days prior to sailing, except for sign language interpreting requests which must be submitted 60 days prior to sailing".

What are the steps Royal Caribbean takes to prepare for guests before coming on board?

Royal Caribbean collects and reviews all accommodation requests, working with relevant parties to prepare. C

loser to the sailing date, about 10 days beforehand, important details are disseminated to staff, such as housekeeping and dining. 

Where can you find the special needs form?

The special needs form is a very important tool for anyone to use. As listed on the website, the form requires basic information, including:

• Personal details such as name and address
• What accommodations are requested
• If an accessible stateroom is required
• Accessible hotel room pre or post-cruise
• Any equipment that needs to be brought on board
• Dietary request
• Accessible shore excursion
• Any other request

The website notes that information provided on the form will be shared with only those who need it, such as crew members, housekeeping staff, and third parties, including ground transportation staff or shore excursions where required.

How can I get assistance with embarkation and disembarkation?

The cruise line does provide a wheelchair and assistance in navigating the terminal and getting on the ship. Asking the day of can be an issue, as the information is collected and organized days in advance.

Pettit did note that staff does their best to make sure wheelchairs are available when needed, and organizing various boarding times is part of this process. Sometimes patience is required, though.

While onboard the cruise, scooters and wheelchairs are not provided unless it is a medical emergency. Royal Caribbean does work with companies that can provide mobility options that can be rented for the duration of the cruise and even delivered right to the guest’s cabin.

What can be done for guests with food allergies or dietary restrictions?

Pettit noted that dietary restrictions and allergies are the second biggest request after pier assistance. Royal Caribbean is very experienced in dealing with common needs such as gluten, dairy and lactose-free foods, which he noted are well highlighted on menus. However, there are less common allergies that can be problematic for guests.

He advised cruisers can request the following evening's menu with modifications.

What type of options do we have on board for those individuals with autism?

Royal Caribbean is known to be first autism friendly cruise line in the world, partnering with Autism on the Seas, which helps them with specific products and services, including sensory friendly movies, an autism channel, a social storybook to name a few.

 In addressing this, Pettit explained that there is lots of programming that can be offered on board the ship, and literally, they can make any of them accessible.

Can guests bring a service dog on a cruise ship?

When asked if service dogs are permitted onboard, the answer was an emphatic yes, with Pettit going on to discuss the critical, evolving role of service dogs play,  adding they do many things:  “Service dogs help retrieve object, alert people that somebody is at the door there now, medical alert dogs that help people to detect if they're going to have a seizure or to take their medication.

He did clarify that service dogs have been specifically trained to perform a very specific function or take to help a person with a disability, different than a therapy dog who may not qualify under the ADA as a service dog. 

Are there sharp containers and fridges for diabetics?

Yes, Royal Caribbean does provide these in the stateroom, and Pettit advised the need to clearly identify specific requirements.

For example, not all diabetes medicine needs to be refrigerated.  

If a guest needs oxygen, can Royal Caribbean provide it onboard?

Royal Caribbean does not provide oxygen for their cruise; it is only available for emergencies, so guests need to make their own arrangements in this regard.

He noted the advancements that have led to the portable oxygen concentrator that helps convert ambient air into on0demand oxygen, which may be of benefit to some passengers.

If a guest needs dialysis, can they sail with Royal Caribbean?

Guests who can bring their machines and do self-administered dialysis are welcome to sail, and this has been happening for decades.

Royal Caribbean is unable to provide medically supervised hemodialysis; however, some guests have been using self-administered NxStage equipment, which which are permissible.

Are there accessible shore excursions available?

Discussing accessible short excursions, Pettit describes his team's effort, "I have a small six seven member team that deals exclusively with accessible shore excursions, which are akin to a concierge service."

"They work in various ports of call with tour operators to provide guests with what they are looking for. This is also why it is key to communicate well heard of time."

Are Royal Caribbean's private islands accessible?

Yes, they are, and Pettit elaborated that both Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas and Labadee in Haiti have a good amount of access with hard pathways throughout the island, accessible trams,  beach wheelchairs to navigate the sand, pull lifts to get in and out of the pool and accessible cabanas. 

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy the natural beauty of the Canadian maritime provinces, and Halifax is a star attraction, popular on many east coast cruising itineraries. Established in 1749, the historic city is full of east coast charm, with plenty of activities that take advantage of the natural surroundings and seaside location.

With mild temperatures and warm afternoon sun, it is an ideal season to explore the outdoors and the magnificent Atlantic views. The quaint, historic city center with classic red brick buildings takes guests back to the area’s 17th-century colonial roots.

Whether it be for scenic tours, outdoor activities, food, or relaxation, there is something for everyone to enjoy. And, with the busy summer tourist season ending, the atmosphere is perfect.  

Here are some of the top reasons to cruise to this east coast destination in autumn.

Weather and Climate

Halifax is located in Eastern Canada, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated in the aptly named Halifax Harbour, one of the largest, deepest harbour’s in the world, perfect for a cruise ship's port of call.  

Fall makes for great temperatures in this region. September can see cooler mornings but generally warms up to temperatures in the 70s as the sun warms the land, perfect weather for sightseeing. The Atlantic Ocean is still relatively mild in the 60s, which makes it great for boating activities.

In October, as the leaves start to turn into their most vibrant colors, visitors can expect temperatures in the low 50 and 60s and slightly more rain than in September. Make sure to pack a jacket, as the mornings can be cool.

The surrounding ocean and rolling hills of Halifax can create dynamic weather patterns, so it is always a good idea to have layers and an umbrella for a quick shower. Fog is common in the coastal city but most often burns off, so not to worry.

Crowds and Prices

Halifax has become a prime tourist destination, with millions of regional, national and international travelers visiting each year. The summer months, with the warmest weather and lots of festivals, see the most visitors.

In the fall, students start back to school after labour day, seeing a significant decrease in crowds. This makes for less traffic, leisurely strolls and easier to get into sought after restaurants along Halifax’s seaside boardwalk.

Also, the latter part of the fall seas better pricing. On select Royal Caribbean cruises, prices drop as much as 40% between September and October. Money that can be spent on fun excursions and lobster feasts.

Fall foliage

One of the foremost reasons to visit the east coast is the fall foliage. Trees change from their summer greens to the most spectacular colors, brilliant reds, oranges, to soft yellows. So beloved are these leaves that a red maple leaf is the centerpiece of the Canadian flag.

There are lots of ways to take part in this scenic transformation, which is at its height from mid-September to October. For a more relaxed pace, stroll the downtown areas of Halifax and its many parks and tree lined streets. Don’t miss the Halifax Public Gardens. Established in the Victorian age, this free park is a stunning showcase of flora and fauna. The crimson colored bandstand is a great spot to take in the views or catch a concert.

The area also has a number of parks, including Point Pleasant Park which features almost 200 acres of serene, forested landscape in the southern end of the Halifax Peninsula.

Outdoor activities

The east coast provides a wide array of activities and sights to see. Many great beaches, boating, kayaking, and trails; the possibilities are endless. For the more adventurous, there is whale watching, or perhaps a “Harbour Hopper” a bus that turns into a boat for a tour of both the land and sea.

Another must see is Peggy’s Cove, a fishing village not far from Halifax. Home to its famous lighthouse and rocky shores, it is truly a picture perfect postcard. A recent upgrade to the area provides a fully accessible viewing deck on the Atlantic Ocean, which is great news for tourists.

For those wanting an authentic mariner experience, Royal Caribbean offers a local excursion where guests get to be crew for the day on a lobster boat. As they sail out of the harbour, cruisers get to learn about the importance of lighthouses, followed by a hands-on experience retrieving a lobster from its trap.   

Seafood and much more

The Haligonian food scene has been shaped by its proximity to the sea and its French, English, and Scottish settlers. In particular, this Atlantic region of Canada is renowned for its bountiful fresh seafood. Throughout the fall, guests can enjoy lobster served with butter in the traditional Nova Scotia style. Don't worry; most places provide plastic bibs for the somewhat messy process of consuming this delicacy.

September is also a great time to take part in Canada’s largest oyster festival. Try a variety of oysters in differing preparations, and see how to shuck oysters from the pros. Fresh mussels, Digby scallops, and even dried seaweed are all on the menu

The region is known for its wild blueberries and freshly harvested apples, which are used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes. Casual eats include a donair, which consists of spicy meat in a pita with a genuinely unique creamy garlic sauce. A product of the Scottish influence (Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin, after all) are oatcakes; a perfect afternoon treat with coffee. And, before you leave, make sure to pick up some authentic, locally made maple syrup for those who weren't lucky enough to cruise with you.

Waterfront  

Some of the best places to try out activities and try some local delights is the waterfront. The impressive 2.5 mile waterfront boardwalk weaves amongst some of its glories from the past, as well as great food and activity options. With fewer crowds in the fall, it is particularly a nice place to explore.

Rent a bike and peddle the whole of the path to get the full experience. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops of all types. Don’t miss Amos Pewter along the waterfront, which makes unique handicrafts and jewelry out of the metal alloy. To cap it all off, try your hand at cards or the slots at the local casino, also located on the boardwalk.

After a walk, visit the Alexander Keith Brewery, which has been making beer since 1820. Listen to some Celtic music at the 200 year old Historic Properties while chatting with locals. The relaxed atmosphere of fall makes it so enjoyable.

Historic Sites

If the weather turns to rain, or simply you are interested in the history of Halifax, there are plenty of attractions that are easily accessible in the downtown area.

Located on the Halifax waterfront, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic takes you back in time as you can learn about the region’s maritime history, including its role in the Titanic recovery. Not far away is Fairview Lawn Cemetery, the final resting place of over 100 victims of the Titanic.

There are also several great museums and galleries located in the downtown area, such as the Museum of Natural History, The Canadian Museum of Immigration, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which features local renowned artist Maud Lewis. Topping it all off is Citadel Hill, is mid-18th century fort with an impressive star-shaped footprint.

Trying to predict the weather is no easy task, and on a cruise ship, there's many more variables to consider than on land.

Did you know Royal Caribbean employs its own dedicated meteorologist to guide the fleet with the best advice based on weather conditions?

Royal Caribbean Chief Meteorologist James Van Fleet is a former TV weatherman, but now works just with Royal Caribbean to give the captain of each ship the best outlook on what the weather is doing now and what it is likely to do in the near future.

On a recent President’s Cruise to Alaska in June of 2022,  Mr. Van Fleet gave a presentation on the “Art of Weather Forecasting”.

During the hour long discussion on the Ovation of the Seas, Mr. Van Fleet talks about his journey to his dream job as well as the challenges of forecasting weather for an international fleet of cruise ships.

Although meteorology is heavily based in science, he takes us through the ambiguities and uncertainties associated with weather forecasting.  

With his talent for storytelling, Mr. Van Fleet recounts his journey, how he joined Royal Caribbean, and what the future holds.

How it all started

Originally Van Fleet had ambitions to be a DJ and was lucky enough to get a job at a local radio station at 18 years of age. After a while, seeking out some variety, he tried his hand at the weather.  

Some time afterward, an opportunity came up to do weather at a local tv station; Van Fleet was keen to move but was warned that his chances were slim. The preferred candidate never showed up for an interview, and he landed the job. So began his television career.

Working in weather hot spots like Oklahoma and Texas, Van Fleet gained experience broadcasting about severe weather, including tornadoes that are common in the region. Moving to Florida, he expanded his knowledge by working on hurricanes and storms. This time laid the groundwork for his future career in international cruising. Although with the last name fleet, it clearly was his destiny.

How he came to work at Royal Caribbean

In 2016, the Anthem of the Seas was caught in some unexpected bad weather at sea while cruising between New Jersey and the Bahamas. After an internal investigation of the unsettling event, the cruise line decided they needed an in-house, dedicated resource, and Van Fleet was brought onboard as Chief Meteorologist. His “dream job” as he describes it.

Hard to believe, but his appointment was an industry first. Prior to this, cruise lines used outside vendors to provide them with forecasts. However, it was felt that this was no longer sufficient.

Talking about the transition from weather forecasting on land to a company with international ships, Van Fleet says that he used to provide just over 2000 forecasts a year, and is now responsible 18,950, a momentous task. Not to mention that it is even more difficult than forecasting on land.

What’s a typical day?

Six years later, listening to Van Fleet talk, you quickly get the picture that there is no such thing as a typical day in his job. He can be in Miami, where he spends at least half the year working through hurricane and typhoon season, or he may be visiting weather specialists in Oklahoma. You may even find him flying on a NOAA hurricane hunter plane, seeking out the eye of a storm.

According to Van Fleet, he gets some ribbing from fellow colleagues about what it's like to make mistakes and still get paid. Joking aside, he is very cognizant of the ramifications of an error.

 As he describes it, there are not two days that are the same and “even when it is beautiful in Miami… there is something going on somewhere.”

Weather forecasting

One of the biggest challenges to marine forecasting is that, unlike on land, both the weather and the ships are moving, creating far more variables to deal with.

In addition to this, they monitor the company's private islands in the Bahamas and Haiti, as well as ports where they get food and fuel or have shipyards and dry docks.

Van Fleet says it all starts with the current weather, and they go from there. He looks at plenty of maps, but predicting weather internationally has its challenges. Talking about the upcoming world cruise, Van Fleet discusses the specific challenges of this type of journey. He notes that the hardest part will be the crossing of the Drake Passage, the body of water between Cape Hope Horn, Chili and the islands of  Antarctica. He will be onboard the Serenade of the Seas for this part of the adventure.

Tools of the trade

An invaluable tool in weather forecasting is computer models. There are more than a dozen weather models, and they don’t always agree, which is why viewers see differing forecasts, especially as it relates to hurricane modeling.

Meteorologists also use radar, but Van Fleet cautions that infrared radar can have issues as it relies on temperature differences. On a foggy day, you won’t necessarily see it on a radar, which can be a problem for a ship.

The other issue in understanding weather, especially at sea, is that there are plenty of data gaps. On land, there are weather sensors everywhere, but there are many places on the sea that do not. This means, in a way, you can be flying blind.

Why you can’t go to Perfect Day at CocoCay

Sometimes ships need to change course and skip a scheduled port stop. This can be a big disappointment for Royal Caribbean guests who love the cruise line’s private destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Van Fleet explains that weather can be difficult to predict in the Bahamas. He has even tapped into a local weather resource, the Bahamas Spotter Network, who use old school walkie talkies to communicate about impending bad weather.

Another variable is the ship class. Royal Caribbean has 5, soon to be 6 classes of ships, and their characteristics mean that they respond to weather differently. The larger ships of the Oasis class are better able to navigate turbulent water than smaller ships.

It also depends on what is going on that the dock and pier assignments. It's fair to say that if you miss a port, it is because it's not safe to dock. 

Communication

Communication with guests is a big part of Van Fleet’s job at Royal Caribbean. Whether it is supplying information for a cruise compass or on social media channels.

This is something he is also working on with the ships. He has embarked on a campaign to visit the officers of all the ships, so he can get to know them better. He also does a fleetwide call every week to make sure they are on the same page. During the pandemic, he designed a course, Marine Meteorology Training, for bridge offices.

Van Fleet acknowledges that the weather business receives a lot of blowback about hurricane forecasts gone wrong.   As he says, errors expand with time, but he feels like there is an opportunity to better explain to viewers why there is a range of impact zones, especially the farther out you go in time.

Looking to the future

Meteorology has improved by leaps and bounds, especially as it relates to forecasting storm landfalls. According to Van Fleet, the next big challenge is understanding and predicting the rapid growth in intensity. What causes a tropical storm becomes a category 3 storm overnight is one of the most pressing challenges in forecasting.  

There are also unexpected events, such as the 2021 eruption of the La Soufrière Volcano in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Van Fleet worked on coordinating ship efforts as Royal Caribbean assisted inhabitants in getting off the islands. He also had to monitor the potential impacts of ash and smoke on the company's ship cruising in the Caribbean.

As he closed out his presentation, you can’t help but come away with the impression that Van Fleet loves his job and his passion for it is boundless. He made a special thanks to Royal Caribbean cruisers who “ do a phenomenal job in sharing pictures on social media”, a great help to him.

Great news for travelers flying home to the U.S. after a cruise, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will no longer require travelers entering the U.S. to provide a negative Covid-19 pre-departure test.

An official announcement will come from President Bident later today, a welcome change for the travel industry and travelers alike.

The new policy will come into effect Sunday at 12:01 a.m. after heavy lobbying from airlines and the travel industry.

Despite these changes, Royal Caribbean still requires pre-cruise testing for its sailings worldwide, along with vaccination requirements.

Current Covid-19 testing

Since January 2021, travelers returning to the United States from international destinations must complete a pre-departure Covid-19 test for their flights. A major inconvenience for cruisers traveling back home after cruises abroad, who have already tested before their cruise.

Currently, airline passengers must present negative Covid–19 results, using common tests such as rapid antigen or PCR. Specifically, the test needs to be completed no more than 1 day before the first scheduled departure time in the flight itinerary, applying to all travelers, including U.S. citizens, residents, and transit travelers.

This is another headache for many travelers, and especially cruisers disembarking abroad, who have to find a testing site, out of the country that meets the tight 1 day testing timeline.

Stress for cruisers

For cruisers traveling for the popular summer season in Europe, this means more money, and in some cases, more stress.

Initially, Royal Caribbean provided its guests with onboard testing to assist in meeting requirements to return home after their cruise; however, they discontinued the process, leaving guests to find their own solutions in unfamiliar cities.

While many airports provide pre-flight testing, recently, European cruisers reported issues with booking timely testing. In May, popular ports like Barcelona, Spain, had long lineups for airport testing, with some cruisers reporting that they were unable to book or get same day testing, forcing them to spend an extra day.

Ongoing flight cancellations and airline delays have further aggravated the situation for passengers, leaving them scrambling to find new testing solutions with last minute changes.

This not only affects European cruises but other cruises, such as those to Alaska. A number of cruises home port in cities such as Vancouver, Canada, requiring cruisers to test before flights back to the U.S.

Additional cost

The cost of pre-cruise and return testing adds up. In Barcelona, a major hub for European cruises, antigen tests can cost in excess of $40 per person. Some opt for online proctored tests, but this requires reliable internet access, which is another expense on a cruise.

In addition to cost, many cruisers have expressed concerns about what to do if they test positive in a foreign country. Looking for the right insurance, including Covid-19 coverage, is one more thing that cruisers need to consider in their planning.

Complicating this are ever changing protocols that vary by country. From the time you book a cruise, to sail, policies may change significantly.

Pre-Cruise testing

Today's announcement is welcome by many, but for now, Royal Caribbean continues to require pre-cruise testing for all its cruises, with specific protocols varying by region and country. As noted on the cruise line’s Healthy Sail Center website:

"All l guests 2 and up take a COVID-19 test before sailing. All crew are tested regularly per CDC guidelines."

For cruisers leaving from destinations such as Barcelona, the criteria specifies:

• Vaccinated guests who are up to date (with vaccines) must show a negative result for a PCR or an antigen test taken no more than 2 days before boarding day. Vaccinated guests who are not up to date will have a 1 day window to take this test. Kids age 5 to 11 who have been vaccinated may present proof of full vaccination and follow the testing protocols for vaccinated guests.
• Unvaccinated kids age 2 to 11 must show a negative result for a PCR or antigen test taken no more than 1 day before boarding day.
• Guests under 2 years of age do not need to complete a pre-cruise test.

An important condition for many countries in Europe, the most recent vaccine dose can be no more than 9 months (270 days) ago. Royal Caribbean continues to require all guests age 12 and up are fully vaccinated. Booster doses, though not required, are strongly recommended once you are eligible.

Specific telehealth options continue to be accepted but must be completed with a supervised virtual video visit, and all tests are at the guests’ expense. Royal Caribbean sells eMed Tests Kits and allows Canada’s Switch Health online tests.
