Royal Caribbean releases 2017-2018 Australia summer itineraries

In:
18 Apr 2016

Royal Caribbean announced its 2017-2018 Australia summer season itineraries.

Ovation of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas will combine to offer 66 sailings ranging from two to 23 nights during the 2017/18 season. From September 2017 through to April 2018 the four megaliners will call at 46 ports across Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Asia and North America with departures from Sydney, Fremantle, Auckland, Singapore, Honolulu and Seattle.

Royal Caribbean remains the biggest cruise line in Sydney over the summer season – with bigger ships and more capacity than any other cruise line.

The recently refurbished Explorer of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas will sail predominantly to destinations like Mystery Island and Port Vila in Vanuatu as well as Noumea, Isle of Pines and Lifou (Loyalty Islands) in New Caledonia.

Meanwhile Radiance of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas will focus on Australia and New Zealand itineraries, sailing to ports around Australia like Hobart, Adelaide and Fremantle, as well as to the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

Radiance of the Seas will also include calls to Fiji and Tonga on her 14-night Sydney to Auckland cruise, departing 3 January 2017.

Royal Caribbean guests will soon start to experience more overnight calls. Explorer of the Seas will make two overnight calls in Suva in Fiji on her repositioning voyages, at the commencement of the season and on her return to Seattle in 2018, allowing guests to enjoy a multi-day shore excursion or choose to stay overnight on land. Both Ovation of the Seas and Radiance of the Seas overnight in Adelaide. Radiance of the Seas will overnight in Adelaide during her nine-night Tasmania cruise departing on 13 December 2017 and Ovation of the Seas will follow suit during her eight-night Tasmania voyage departing 27 January 2018.

Explorer of the Seas will continue the work of Radiance of the Seas in opening up the South Coast of NSW to cruise tourism with a maiden call to Wollongong (Port Kembla) – as part of her seven-night Tasmania sailing departing 12 March 2018 – making her the largest cruise ship to ever call there.

It is Sunday and perhaps it is starting warm up, weather-wise, where you are living. The Royal Caribbean news this week heated up, and we have it all summarized for you here, in case you missed any of it.

Royal Caribbean's 24th ship, Ovation of the Seas, formally joined the fleet this week and started sailing from Southampton, England.

Royal Caribbean took delivery of this new ship in a ceremony held in Bremerhaven, Germany and then sent the ship over the English Channel to Southampton.

Ovation's arrival in Southampton coincided with even more Ovation of the Seas news, as Royal Caribbean revealed who her Godmother would be, as well as the larger-than-life art that would be added onboard.

99 days of Harmony: Izumi Hibachi & Sushi

In:
16 Apr 2016

As we get closer to Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas launch, we are counting down until the ship's debut with new blog posts about an aspect of the cruise.

Izumi

One of the most popular and successful specialty restaurants across Royal Caribbean's fleet is Izumi and Harmony of the Seas will offer her own edition.

The experience at Izumi is about offering fresh, flavorful and quality Japanese cuisine.  This is more than just sushi, and includes soups, salads and an incredible hibachi experience.

INTERVIEW WITH IZUMI'S MASTER CHEF

Sushi is at the heart of the Izumi experience and if you are a fan of sashimi, nigiri and maki, then Izumi is the place for you.

Izumi offers a pretty wide selection of sushi options, so it's not just California and Rainbow rolls.

On Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships, Izumi has expanded to also offer a Hibachi experience where guests can enjoy teppan-style dining.

Izumi's Hibachi option is as much about the experience as it is about the food. Izumi's chefs cook the food in front of guests surrounding a cooking table.

If you have never done hibachi, it is a must-do and if you have, then you need to check out the great food (and show) Izumi offers.

Royal Caribbean to open Tidal Wave water slide on Liberty of the Seas in June

In:
16 Apr 2016

The Tidal Wave water slide on Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas has never opened to guests, but there is a new opening date that points to when guests can begin riding it.

Royal Caribbean updated its web site to indicate the new slide, "will be available in June."

The Tidal Wave is the first Boomerang style slide at sea, but has never opened to guests following its addition to the ship earlier this year.

We have heard the reason the slide remains closed is due to concerns of guests' safety while riding.

Royal Caribbean has had to design padding for the areas where guests may impact the slide, and that is being built currently.

99 days of Harmony: Starbucks

In:
15 Apr 2016

Each day is bringing us closer to the launch of Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas and we are celebrating with a new blog post every day, all about this amazing new ship!

Starbucks at sea

Royal Caribbean made news when the very first Starbucks at sea with Allure of the Seas.  Since then, the partnership between Royal Caribbean and Starbucks has resulted in a lot of happy (and properly caffeinated) guests.

Harmony of the Seas will also feature a Starbucks at sea, but with a new location.

Royal Caribbean added Starbucks at sea on Allure of the Seas' Royal Promenade, but guests looking to grab a cup of joe will head to the Boardwalk instead.

The Coney Island-inspired Boardwalk on Harmony of the Seas will feature the a Starbucks for guests to enjoy that serves up the same great Starbucks menu as on land.

While parents enjoy the newly relocated Starbucks café on the Boardwalk, kids can meet new friends at a new climbing play area.

Trained baristas will offer signature and seasonal beverages and food.  This means anyone can have a Venti at sea!

Larger-than-life panda art work installed on Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas

In:
15 Apr 2016

After being announced earlier this week, the two panda art pieces were installed on Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas.

Perched atop the SeaPlex on deck 15, the piece depicts a mother panda and her cub, reaching out to one another.

The two pandas were designed by a U.K.-based artist Jo Smith and intended to bestow peace and prosperity on all who interact with them.

Mama and Baby together weigh approximately six-and-a-half tons. Mama is 10 meters high, or approximately 33 feet, from the deck to the top of the sculpture, while Baby is approximately three meters, or ten feet tall.

A Royal Caribbean primer for the Disney Cruise Line fan in sticker shock

In:
14 Apr 2016

Disney Cruise Line released its Summer 2017 itineraries this week and many Disney Cruise Line fans very surprised by the pricing they found.

With this kind of sticker shock, there are some fans who have come to a similar conclusion as Dave.

If you are someone considering an alternative cruise that is just as fun, relaxing and far less costly as a Disney Cruise, Royal Caribbean is a great choice.

That being said, we understand there is trepidation about changing cruise lines and leaving the warm embrace of the Mouse.  We are here to tell you that there's nothing to worry about and that a Royal Caribbean cruise vacation is very similar to a Disney Cruise (minus that price tag).

Here is our guide to how you can learn to stop worrying and love the Crown and Anchor.

Step 1: Disney and Royal Caribbean offer similar experiences

Before one can consider a Royal Caribbean cruise, I think it is important to understand that both Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean offer very similar experiences.

Both cruise lines are mass-market cruise lines that target family travel.

Both cruise lines embrace a strategy of building cruise ships that offer guests a lot to do onboard.

Both cruise lines have plenty for kids, parents, adults, grandparents and everyone of all ages to do and see.

In my experience, many ardent Disney Cruise Line fans have cruised Disney Cruise Line solely and a DCL cruise was their first cruising experience.  Give Disney credit, they are great at marketing their products and getting those new to cruising to give their cruise line a try simply because of the name recognition.

Believe it or not, I like the product Disney Cruise Line offers but like you, I also see this, frankly, crazy pricing Disney Cruise Line has and it is why we cruise with Royal Caribbean.

The first step in giving Royal Caribbean a try is to believe me when I say there are things Disney does better and there are things Royal Caribbean does better, but the bottom line is the experiences are more similar than they are different.

Step 2: Looking at what Royal Caribbean offers (besides price)

While price is a big deal, no one should book a cruise purely on cost factor alone. If that were the case, this blog post should be focusing on some other cruise line options.

Royal Caribbean has 24 (soon to be 25 next month) ships in its fleet and there are a few areas of the cruise experience Royal Caribbean greatly distinguishes itself from Disney Cruise Line.

Itinerary variety

Disney Cruise Line only has 4 ships in its fleet today, so it can only offer so many itineraries.  Royal Caribbean's fleet size means you can take cruises from Florida, Europe, Galveston, Baltimore, Alaska, New York, Australia, China and many more destinations for most of the year.

While Disney serves many of those areas too, they do so only occasionally and in many cases, there is not much variety in itineraries offered.

With Royal Caribbean, you can opt to explore more of the world via a cruise ship or visit your favorite spots again and again.

Ship features

Royal Caribbean's cruise ships are built to be meccas of onboard entertainment.

Royal Caribbean cruise ships may offer Broadway shows, ice skating, surf simulators, rock climbing walls, water slides, multiple pools and much more.

Royal Caribbean ships offer adults-only pools, a wide variety of specialty restaurants, unlimited alcohol and drink packages, and a casino.

Many Disney Cruise Line fans that try Royal Caribbean often comment about the wide variety of stuff to do while onboard.

Step 3: Kids, kids and kids

Earlier in this post, Disney's brand recognition was cited as a reason why many choose to cruise with Disney Cruise Line in the first place, but children are also a big factor.

I get it, Disney and kids are nearly synonymous with each other and many parents are concerned how could any other cruise line compare to what Disney offers for kids.

While Disney does a great job with kids and kids programming, Royal Caribbean has stepped up their children's programming in recent years and it is much closer to what Disney offers than you may think.

Royal Caribbean offers complimentary programming for kids in its Adventure Ocean program, as well as teens in their own area.

The dedicated space for kids and breadth of programming has expanded greatly with each new ship class and for parents looking to cruise with children, the child care facilities on Freedom, Quantum and Oasis class ships should offer excellent choices.

Royal Caribbean also features on nearly all of its ships a nursery option, which for an additional hourly cost, can provide day care for children 6 to 36 months old.

Beyond child care, there is lots for kids to do onboard a Royal Caribbean ship.  Mini golf, ice skating, surf simulator, sports decks, video games, aqua parks and soon water slides are just a few of the options available.

In the Cruise Compass, guests can enjoy even more opportunities for activities throughout the day.

Step 4: (Thinking, considering & pondering) Making the jump

I hope by this point in this post you are thinking along the lines of, "I understand there is a huge price difference and the two cruise lines aren't really that different from each other."

If so, ask yourself this question next, "Why am I paying so much more for a Disney cruise?"

Answering this question may be the linchpin in the proverbial decision axle that convinces you to consider taking a Royal Caribbean cruise.

I think it would be foolish to assume every Disney Cruise Line fan that tries Royal Caribbean would be instant super fans and never look back, but I also believe (based on mine and others experience) that there is a good chance that making the switch would still result in a fun family vacation.

Look at the various options available to you in a Royal Caribbean cruise and consider the various itineraries and ships that might match up with what you are considering.

I often remind people considering Royal Caribbean for the first time, odds are they will still have a satisfying vacation on Royal Caribbean and they will either come around to cruise more with Royal Caribbean or opt to stay with the mouse.  In either case, it will be a good learning experience.

At the risk of shameless self promotion, here are some more resources on this blog to help guide you with what Royal Caribbean offers and what might be of interest to you

Have you cruised with Disney and Royal Caribbean? Share your thoughts on how they compare in our comments!
