10 Reasons people leave their cruise ship vacation disappointed

In:
17 Jun 2023

When you begin planning your cruise, thoughts of what could go wrong are probably nowhere to be found-- nobody wants to go on a disappointing vacation!

Why people are disappointed on cruises

While cruises are a popular vacation choice, if you do not manage your expectations and plan accordingly, you might find yourself wishing that chose something else.

Here are 10 reasons why people leave their cruise ship vacation disappointed and how you can ensure that you have a positive cruise experience!

They chose the wrong cruise ship

Oasis of the Seas next to Liberty of the Seas in Cozumel

As of May 2023, Royal Caribbean has 26 ships in their fleet. When the highly-anticipated Icon of the Seas launches in January 2024, this will increase their fleet size to 27. That means that are over two dozen ships for you to choose for your vacation.

Picking the right ship matters. Do you want a more intimate cruising experience? If so, you will like the environment of smaller ships. They also tend to visit more unique ports of call.

Note, though, that these ships tend to be older. If having newer amenities is important to you, you should spend some time researching whether Royal Caribbean has revitalized the ship or not.

Perhaps you want your schedule to be jam-packed with activities. In that case, select one of today's mega ships that feature activities such as surfing and skydiving simulators, ice skating rinks, water slides, and more.

They did not utilize a travel agent

Travel agent

Whether you have a lot of questions about the cruising industry or are a cruise veteran, booking with a travel agent is the best way to go.

They are a great resource for any question that you may have, such as ship amenities, cabin select, specialty dining and shore excursion recommendations, and more.

Outside of the cruise, they can handle other logistical arrangements, too, such as pre-cruise flights and hotels.

In short, booking with a travel agent will save you time, as you will not have to worry about doing all of the research yourself.

They did not understand what was included in Royal Caribbean's base fare

Hibachi

Your Royal Caribbean cruise fare, unfortunately, is not all-inclusive. It includes unlimited food at certain venues, select beverages, entertainment, accommodations, and transportation between ports. Anything out of that will cost you extra. It is important to keep that in mind when setting your cruise budget.

These option add-ons include alcoholic and select non-alcoholic beverages, specialty dining experiences, shore excursions, spa treatments, and some onboard activities.

Royal Caribbean charges for their escape rooms, lessons on the FlowRider surf simulator, Royal Babies & Tots Nursery services, as well as riding the North Star on a sea day.

They forgot to book cruise add-ons in advance

Speaking of add-ons, you will want to make sure that you book them in advance! If you wait until you board the ship, not only will you find higher prices, but some experiences (i.e., specialty restaurants) will have limited availability.

As soon as you place the deposit for your Royal Caribbean cruise, you will gain access to the Cruise Planner, which is where you will book all extras, including internet and drink packages, shore excursions, spa treatments, arcade credits, classes, and more.

The prices on the Cruise Planner are less than they will be on the ship, as Royal Caribbean often has sales and promotions that make it worthwhile to check the Cruise Planner every so often. You never know when you will find an incredible deal on a drink package or specialty restaurant-- sometimes as much as 40% off onboard pricing.

They selected the wrong dining time

When you book your cruise, you will be prompted to select one of three dining options: early, late, or My Time. The first two are part of the traditional cruise experience, while the latter is the more flexible option.

If you select the early or late seating, you will be seated at the same time each night of the cruise with the same table mates and wait staff, meaning that they will be able to learn your preferences throughout the trip!

On the other hand, those that may not want to stick to a set schedule will prefer My Time Dining, which allows passengers to make reservations ahead of time for the Main Dining Room that work well with their onboard and onshore plans.

Menu at an angle

If you would like, you can also just head to the Main Dining Room once onboard when hunger strikes. Note, though, that you may face a wait if you do this!

With My Time Dining, you will not be seated at the same table each evening, as you are placed wherever there is an opening when you arrive.

Dining times only apply to the Main Dining Room's dinner service, so you can go to the buffet for dinner at anytime during their dinner hours. Similarly, you will not have to select a time for breakfast because it is first-come, first-served!

They selected the wrong cabin and/or cabin location

Junior Suite on Symphony of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has a variety of cabin categories, ranging from interior rooms with no natural sunlight to multi-story suites.

For some, an interior cabin may be the obvious option because they can allocate funds to other vacation expenses. On the other hand, the budget of someone else may mean that they are able to splurge on a suite.

If you are traveling with a family, consider the benefits of booking two cabins for the extra space, even if this means two inside cabins instead of one balcony. Do you think the extra space and two bathrooms will make your cruise better? Would you be okay stepping over everyone's stuff for a week in a single cabin?

Harmony of the Seas interior cabin

In addition to the stateroom category, you will need to determine where you want it to be located. If you have a preference, stray from selecting a guarantee cabin, as your room will be automatically assigned by Royal Caribbean closer to sailing based on what is available.

Are you someone sailing with young children or who likes to return to your cabin earlier in the evening? If so, staterooms that are near popular late-night venues might keep you awake longer than you would like.

Likewise, cabins near elevator banks are subject to more noise, as they have more people passing by.

They did not expect for there to be large crowds

Oasis pool deck

Cruise ships can hold thousands of passengers at once. In fact, when Icon of the Seas launches, she will have a maximum passenger capacity of 7,600 guests! That being said, there are moments where your cruise will feel crowded, beginning on embarkation day when you arrive at the terminal.

Once onboard, you may encounter a long line at the buffet, packed elevators, or even a lack of pool chairs on a sea day.

There are some things that you can do to mitigate how often you will interact with large crowds. You can, for instance, dine outside of peak hours, take the stairs, visit the pool deck in the morning or late afternoon, and venture outside of the area adjacent to the cruise terminal in ports of call.

They did not familiarize themselves with ship lingo

You will hear the words "aft," "forward," "stern," "bow," "starboard," and "port" while on your cruise vacation. Taking the time to learn what these terms mean prior to embarkation will prevent you from getting lost and frustrated.

If you hear port port and starboard, know that these are are directional terms used to indicate the left and right side of the ship relative to the bow. This means that, regardless of which way you are physically facing, they never change.

The bow is the ship's forward most part, and the stern is the rear of the ship opposite from the bow. Forward and aft refer to location; forward is the front of the ship and the aft is the rear.

If you decide not to worry about any of the above terms, at least understand what "ship time" is!

When a cruise itinerary crosses through timezones, the ship keeps the same time of the departure port; it does not matter if the local time is an hour ahead or behind!

Failing to learn and adhere to ship time could result in your missing your ship, even if you thought you had time to get back.

They did not purchase cruise travel insurance

Travel insurance

When you book your cruise, you will be asked if you want to purchase travel insurance. This provides coverage for things such as travel delays, medical emergencies, and luggage mishaps.

Travel insurance is meant to provide peace of mind in the event that something unfortunate occurs while on your cruise vacation. Pricing is dependent on the total trip cost and ranges from $39 to $1,799!

If your trip, for instance, costs $2,400, purchasing insurance through Royal Caribbean will cost you $199.

Royal Caribbean offers one tier of travel insurance that is underwritten by Arch Insurance Company. Note that if you are a resident of New York State, this policy is not available to you.

Below is what is covered by the policy:

  • Trip Interruption: Up to 150% of total trip cost if you can't start or finish your cruise vacation because you're sick or hurt, there's a death in the family or another covered reason.
  • Trip Delay: Up to $2,000 ($250 per day) for catch-up expenses
  • Missed Connection: Up to $300 if you miss your trip departure for covered reasons by three hours or more.
  • Accident and Sickness Medical: up to $25,000 if you get hurt and $25,000 if you get sick on your cruise vacation.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: Up to $50,000 if you need emergency medical transportation during your vacation.
  • Baggage Protection and Delay: Up to $1,500 if your bags are lost, stolen, or damaged and up to $500 to buy necessary personal items if your bags are delayed.

You never know when (or if) anything will happen, but if you find yourself in an unlucky situation, you will certainly be disappointed that you opted to save the few hundred dollars and pass on the insurance.

They did not research the ports of call in advance

Mariner of the Seas docked in Labadee

To make the most out of your time in each port, you should spend time researching what shore excursions are available. You do not want to miss out on any once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

If you are sailing to the Caribbean, you might be surprised at what adventurous tours are offered, such as zip lining through jungles, taking an ATV tour of the coast, and more. You do not have to spend each day on the beach (although, there is nothing wrong with that!).

When you begin searching, You do not have to book anything immediately. If, however, you see a tour that you want to do, it is best to go ahead and make your reservation, as you never know how popular the tour will be with other cruisers; it may sell out closer to the sail date!

You do not want to be scrambling to figure out what you are doing the night before you dock! You may find that certain experiences are sold out, leaving you with whatever is still available.

While not a private island like Perfect Day at CocoCay the 17-acre property will be available exclusively to Royal Caribbean cruise passengers.

Guests who purchase a day pass will be able to relax on one of four beaches: Tranquility Beach, Hideaway Beach, Harbor Beach, and Sapphire Beach. And for those who want an upgraded experience, cabanas will be available to rent.

Once completed, the Royal Beach Club at Paradise Island will have a public-private partnership, meaning that Bahamians will be able to own up to 49% equity and local businesses can take part in managing the majority of the experience.

Both the construction phase and operation of the Royal Beach Club will create hundreds of jobs. The economic impact is estimated to be around $1 billion over the course of ten years.

Moreover, the 17-acre property is divided between the cruise line and Crown Land, with Royal Caribbean owning 13 and the remaining four being Crown Land.

What are sea trials?

Sea trials test a cruise ship's navigational and technical systems. This is the final part of a cruise ship construction prior to delivery.

During these tests, everything from the ship's propulsion to navigation and engines are tested. It is imperative that everything be in tip-top shape when the ship officially joins the fleet.

Sea trials range in duration. Wonder of the Seas', for instance, was only four days. Moreover, sometimes it is common for there to be two different sessions.

The sea trials are conducted with a combination of shipyard employees, as well as Royal Caribbean crew members.

First ship of her kind

Royal Caribbean has not launched a new class of ship since 2014, making Icon of the Seas that much more exciting.

Not only will she be the largest cruise ship in the world, but she will also feature many firsts for both the cruise line and industry, including the record-breaking Category 6 water park.

Upon completion, she will be 6% larger than Wonder of the Seas, who currently holds the title for largest cruise ship in the world.

Hideaway aerial

The 250,800 gross ton ship will be nothing short of thrilling, offering something to appeal to everyone!

From relaxing on the revamped pool decks, to catching an exciting show at the AquaDome, spending quality time together in the family-centered Surfside neighborhood, and indulging in brand-new culinary experiences, Icon of the Seas is set to offer the ultimate family vacation.

"We think it's going to be the best family vacation in the world," said Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley.

Royal Caribbean teases Utopia of the Seas reveal

In:
15 Jun 2023

The wait for details on what Royal Caribbean has planned for Utopia of the Seas looks like it will be over soon.

Utopia of the Seas teaser image

Not much has been said about Utopia of the Seas, which makes Royal Caribbean's tease all that more exciting.

"This is the one — for everyone. 😎 Stay tuned for #UtopiaoftheSeas revealed — it all happens Tuesday, June 20," the company wrote on Facebook.

The website has been updated to include a timer counting down to June 20, too. Here, guests are able to sign up for an email update to get more information when it becomes available.

Following Oasis, Allure, Harmony, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas, this will be the final Oasis Class ship. That is, unless, Royal Caribbean decides to order more in the future.

The company has not said much about Utopia, which has added to the intrigue of what we can expect.

utopia-of-the-seas-countdown

Measuring 1,188 feet long and over 230,000 gross tons, she will be smaller than the record-breaking Icon of the Seas. At maximum capacity, she will be able to accommodate around 7,000 guests, which is similar to other Oasis Class vessels.

There has been no official word on where the ship will sail from or specific itineraries. Royal Caribbean has said, though, that she will visit Perfect Day at CocoCay

Guests interested in sailing on Utopia of the Seas should keep their summer schedule open for next year, as she is scheduled to hit the high seas in summer 2024.

Here is what we know about the ship so far.

First LNG-powered Oasis Class ship

Utopia of the Seas will stand out from her sister ships in that she will be the first Oasis Class vessel to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), which is the cleanest fossil fuel that is able to power ships today.

LNG fuel has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 30%, sulfur emissions by close to 10)%, and nitrogen oxide emissions by around 85%.

Brand-new dining concept

Train concept car

According to Royal Caribbean's Senior Vice President and Chief Product Innovation Officer Jay Schneider, Utopia of the Seas will feature "...a mixed reality immersive dining experience with a train motif...that's going to blow people away."

Immersive dining has become a trend around the world, and cruise ships are no exception to wanting in on this fad!

Onboard Princess Cruises' Discovery and Enchanted Princess, for instance, guests will find 360, an immersive and destination-inspired restaurant that features a 7-course menu. The dining venue is enclosed with LED walls that project visuals that carry a storyline and align with each course.

Dining car concept for Utopia of the Seas

The unnamed dining experience is still a work in progress. One concept that the company is playing around with is serving each course in a different "destination."

The first, for instance, might be Grand Central Station in New York, with the second in Oslo, Norway or Lombardy, Italy.

Importance of booking as soon as possible

Utopia of the Seas name

If you are hoping to snag a good rate, you will want to book your cruise onboard Utopia of the Seas as soon as possible once itineraries open, as you can often find the cheapest cruise fares when new itineraries are released.

As sailings fill up and there is less availability, rates often increase. Booking early is one way to ensure that you are getting the best price. Plus, you are able to reprice if you find that the fare does drop.

You are not able to reverse this practice and lock in a rate you saw earlier if you find that the price of your cruise of interest has increased.

Aerial view of CocoCay from balloon

Note, though, that price adjustments do not happen automatically. You will be responsible for checking the website to see if the rate has dropped. Likewise, if you booked with a travel agent, you can contact them.

If you have your eye on holiday sailing onboard Utopia of the Seas, booking early will ensure that you have the most flexibility regarding stateroom choice. Holiday sailings tend to book up quickly, meaning that you should not wait to book your Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's cruise!

Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud was first introduced on Celebrity Beyond; however, it will be completely redesigned onboard Celebrity Ascent. Headed by KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group, Daniel Boulud's second restaurant at sea will offer an intimate fine dining experience that is based upon the Chef's travels.

The world-class cuisine offered at Eden Restaurant is going to be expanded with a plant-based tasting menu, which will bring guests closer to the earth through seven courses that are crafted with untouched, fresh, and seasonal ingredients.

On Celebrity Ascent, however, the Cosmopolitan restaurant will be redesigned, with the inspiration coming from the culture of champagne.

Finally, Blu, the exclusive restaurant dedicated to AquaClass guests, will have an outdoor terrance with the ability to seat 24 guests.

Enhanced entertainment, art and retail offerings

Art-Gallery

While food is a major aspect of the cruising experience, entertainment is another selling point for many passengers, and there is no lack of things to do onboard Celebrity Ascent.

First, there will be three brand-new production shows in the Theater, as well as interactive digital experiences in the Club and immersive shows in Eden Bar and Restaurant. Each show will feature world-class dancers, vocalists, musicians, and even specialty artists.

Plus, the Resort Deck is going to be the center of all your nightlife needs. There will be live performances, music, and even a DJ.

MrBeast, YouTube's most acclaimed entertainment star, boarded Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas for an afternoon of fun.

MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has amassed 159 million subscribers and over 27,131,438,600 total views. In terms of popularity, only two YouTube channels have more subscribers, and both are brand channels: T-Series and Cocomelon.

In fact, he is the second YouTube creator in the site's history to surpass 100 million followers. Even his Instagram account is popular, with over 38 million followers.

In a recent video, he boarded Harmony of the Seas to see what the $1 billion ship has to offer and how it compares to other ships, including a boat that he paid a single dollar for.

Since published on June 10, the video has gotten over 71 million views!

Just how popular is MrBeast?

Mr-Beast-Kids-Choice-Awards-Stock

MrBeast is not just a content creator. He is also a philanthropist who has founded and co-founded numerous different organizations, included the Arbor Day Foundation, which has raised over $23 million dollars.

In terms of his viewership, about 112 million people watched the Super Bowl LVII. During the average month, MrBeast harbors roughly 41 million views.

Tim Kasser, a psychologist who studies materialism, conducted a study to prove that if MrBeast were to advertise for any given company or brand, it could cost about half as much as a traditional commercial while reaching a larger audience.

Mr-Beast-Harmony-3

As of June 2023, his most watched video is titled "$456,000 Squid Game in Real Life!" Since it was posted on November 24, 2021, the video has gained over 438 million views.

That, of course, is nowhere close to the most watched YouTube video of all time, Baby Shark Dance, which has been watched over 12 billion times in the six years since being posted to the social media site.

Harmony of the Seas

Harmony of the Seas

While not the largest cruise ship in the world, Harmony of the Seas currently ranks number third, following Symphony and Wonder of the Seas.

When Icon of the Seas launches in January 2024, her position will be bumped down to fourth.

The ship, which measures an astonishing 226,963 gross registered tons, was launched in 2016. Currently, she is sailing from Miami, Florida. In November, she will be repositioned to Galveston, Texas, where she will make 4, 6, 7, and 8-night Western Caribbean cruises through at least April 2025.

Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis Class ship, meaning that she is part of one of the most unique classes of ships in the world and is divided into seven different neighborhoods for guests to explore:

  • Royal Promenade
  • Central Park
  • Boardwalk
  • Pool and Sports Zone
  • Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center
  • Youth Zone
  • Entertainment Place

Likewise, she offers passengers numerous different dining -- both complimentary and specialty -- and entertainment options, such as the infamous AquaTheater performances, Wonderland, Izumi Hibachi and Sushi, and headliner acts in the Royal Theater.

Additionally, there are countless activities for guests to enjoy -- think water slides, FlowRider surf simulators, multi-story dry slide, mini-golf, a zip line, and more. It is easy to see why MrBeast wanted to check out this impressive ship.

In short, there is something for everyone onboard, and there is no possible way that you could be bored while on a Harmony of the Seas cruise.

Mr-Beast-Harmony-of-the-Seas

MrBeast's YouTube video begins by showcasing yachts of various price points, including one that he paid $1 for.

According to the yacht's previous owner, the storage costs were racking up, and he was spending $18,000 per year to storage it. Shortly after the purchase was made, the ship began to sink! They jumped off the vessel moments before it was submerged under the water.

Mr-Beast-One-Dollar-Yacht

After the $1 yacht, he goes on to explore ships worth $1 million, $10 million, $25 million, $50 million, and $300 million dollars. The final ship on the agenda was Harmony of the Seas, which cost a little over $1 billion dollars to build!

"You cannot fathom how massive this ship is," said MrBeast, speaking about the size of Harmony.

"It is literally a floating city...This boat has waterslides, an indoor mall, a basketball court, and tons of other stuff I can't even name!"

Mr-Beast-Harmony-of-the-Seas-2

He and his friends break up to explore different neighborhoods, with Chandler and Nolan heading to the Pool and Sports Zone first.

After being amazed by the water slides and live music on the pool deck, the duo headed over to play a round of mini-golf.

Mr-Beast-Harmony

Next, Chris appears on the Boardwalk: "So I went down a slide [referring to the Ultimate Abyss], and now I'm teleported into like a different world. And you have a carousel?!"

Not only did he charter the ship for himself and his friends, but he ended the video by bringing 400 of his subscribers onboard to partake in the fun, whether that be hanging out on the pool deck, exploring the Boardwalk, playing games in the arcade, climbing the rock wall, eating at Wonderland, and more.

Mr-Beast-Harmony-2

Plus, every single subscriber onboard at the time was gifted with a free three-night cruise on Icon of the Seas.

If they all thought Harmony was impressive, they will be blown away by everything that the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas will offer, including the record-breaking Category 6 Water Park, AquaDome, brand-new dining concepts, and much, much more.

Take a look inside a cruise ship captain's living quarters

In:
08 Jun 2023

We have all seen the videos of how crew members live onboard cruise ships. They live in tight quarters and often have to share a room with another member in their department.

Captain Kate shows what her cabin looks like

Cruise ships captains, however, live a little bit more luxuriously. A captain oversees all onboard operations to ensure that the ship is safely operating during each and every sailing-- it is not an easy job!

While captain of Celebrity Edge, Captain Kate McCue posted a TikTok showing what her living quarters looked like. The video, which was published in August 2020, has amassed over one million likes!

Keep reading to see Captain McCue's living quarters while captain of Celebrity Edge!

Who is Captain Kate McCue?

Captain Kate at the helm

Captain McCue made history as the first American woman to be named captain of a mega cruise ship. In 2015, she became the commanding officer of Celebrity Summit at only 37-years-old.

During her time at California State University, she landed an internship with Chiquita Brands International, where she worked on one of their cargo ships and helped to transport bananas between Ecuador and Los Angeles.

After graduating with her degree in business administration, she moved to Hawaii and worked as a general deckhand on a catamaran. When Captain McCue began to apply for positions with cruise lines, it took her nine months to be offered an entry-level third mate role by Disney Cruise Line.

In 2003, she moved to Royal Caribbean after being offered the role of second officer, and only one year later, she was promoted to first officer.

Her dream was to take command of a vessel one day. In order to accomplish this goal, Captain McCue knew that she needed to further her education, and in 2009, she earned her Chief Mate and Master's License from the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies

By 2011, she was working as a staff captain for Royal Caribbean. This position is second-in-command!

Celebrity Cruises asked Captain McCue to consider applying for a captain’s position in 2015, and she accepted the job of commanding officer for Celebrity Summit, making her the first first female commanding officer of a mega ship in the United States.

As of June 2023, she is captain of Celebrity Beyond, the cruise line's newest ship that is sister to Celebrity Edge. For those interested in following along on her journey as a cruise ship captain, you can subscribe to one of her social media platforms. On TikTok, for instance, she has around 3.5 million followers on TikTok, as well as a total of 8.6 million likes!

What does the main living space look like?

kate-mccue-living-space-celebrity-edge

"Welcome to my humble abode also known as the Captain's Quarters!" says Captain McCue as she began the video and opened the door to her cabin.

There is no shortage of natural light in this stateroom thanks to the amount of windows and infinite veranda.

Immediately, viewers get a sense of how important Bug Naked, an elf sphynx cat that lives with Captain McCue onboard the ship, is to her! You see a plush bed directly under the infinite veranda, perfect for Bug.

captain-kate-living-quarters-edge

The room is furnished with a large couch and coffee table, media console, and television. As she continues on with the video, she shows a framed picture of Saint Nicholas on one of the built in shelves.

captain-kate-mccue-patron-saint

"Because we're superstitious," she says, "there's somebody we never travel without; this is our patron saint of seafarers, Saint Nicholas."

What do the bedroom and bathroom look like?

captain-kate-bedroom-celebrity-edge

Overall, the bedroom feels pretty standard for Celebrity Cruises. She shows a king sized bed, night stands, and another television. As soon as she walks into the bathroom, however, you realize that this is no ordinary stateroom.

captain-kate-mccue-bathroom-celebrity-edge

There is a double sink, rain shower, and even soaking tub, which is great for Bug! The bathroom even connects directly to the primary entry hallway, as well as the bedroom.

Let's take a look at the main galley and office

captain-mccue-main-galley-celebrity-edge

Directly across from the bathroom is the main galley, and yes, there is another television in here! It is also home to Bug's litter box and stroller.

Despite not having a fully equipped kitchen, Captain McCue's Captain's Quarters does have a full-sized refrigerator that is stocked with water and Bug's cat food. Likewise, the drawers of the galley are packed with snacks, such as gummy bear and candy bars. Plus, there is a large table that is able to seat six guests.

captain-mccue-office-celebrity-edge

Connected to the main galley is Captain McCue's office, which in turn is connected directly to the ship's Bridge.

The Bridge is where the ship is commanded, and it is located at the forward of the ship. This is where the captain and other crew members carry out navigational duties.

"We have a minimum of three very qualified and licensed officers manning the bridge at all times," said McCue.

"Three different teams rotate every four hours on and eight hours off....[and] the teams are made up of an officer of the watch, assistant officer of the watch and a quartermaster look out."

How do other crew members live?

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour

Kristine Kugler is currently a dancer onboard Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas, and she posted a video to her YouTube channel in March 2023 showing what her living situation is like. While Captain McCue has her own stateroom, Kugler shares a stateroom with another crew member.

Depending on the crew member's position onboard, they, too, might be able to have their own cabin, albeit not as luxurious as Captain McCue's.

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour-2

Kugler shows a bunk bed, large television, drawers purchased from Amazon for additional storage, closer, and foldable table.

While the room itself is in no way a spacious suite, Kugler provides the most commentary about the size of the bathroom. "The first time we stepped into these bathrooms, it was definitely a culture shock," she said.

Kristine-Kugler-odyssey-room-tour-3

"Because it's a lot tinier than really anything we're used to, and we have to share it with another person."

At the end of the day, the stateroom that a crew member is assigned to is based on their position. Since Captain McCue is the ship's highest responsible officer with decades worth of experience, she has earned the right to one of, if not, the best possible accommodations onboard.

If you are interested in learning more about Captain McCue, check out her social media pages! She has a TikTok and Instagram and posts content regarding operational duties onboard and ports of call.

Dinner on Royal Caribbean: Early Dinner vs. Late Dinner

In:
29 May 2023

When you book your Royal Caribbean cruise, you will be asked to select between three dining options: early, late, and My Time Dining.

Main Dining Room

Whatever option you select will be when you dine in the Main Dining Room for the entire duration of your cruise, so it is important that you weigh the pros and cons of each traditional dining time and choose which is best for you and your travel party.

You can, of course, skip the Main Dining Room and go to a specialty restaurant or Windjammer. Even if that is your plan, you will be required to make a selection during the booking process.

Here is a comparison of early dinner and late dinner on Royal Caribbean cruises.

What is the Main Dining Room?

Women eating in main dining room

The Main Dining Room is Royal Caribbean’s traditional sit-down restaurant that serves three-course meals every night of your cruise. It is also the largest dining venue on any Royal Caribbean ship and spans multiple decks, even on the oldest ships.

Each night, you will be presented with a menu that contains different appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The best part? You are not limited to one of anything, and everything is complimentary, aside from a few premium options listed at the bottom of the menu! If you want to try two appetizers and two desserts, you can order both.

The dining times (i.e., early, late, and My Time) only apply to the dinner service, as breakfast is first come, first serve. You can also dine here for lunch, but only on sea days.

Related21 Tips for the Best Cruise Ship Main Dining Room Experience

Menu at an angle

When it comes to the menus themselves, there will be a new one each evening that is centered around a specific theme, such as Mexican and Italian night. If your cruise is over 10 nights, you may see repeated menus.

Those who are unsure of what to order will appreciate the chef's recommendations at the top of the menu.

Early seating

Waiter serving a family

The first seating in the Main Dining Room usually takes place around 5:30pm or 6:00pm; the exact time varies based on the itinerary. With this seating, you will be able to free up your evenings for shows and other activities taking place around the ship, even if it is just listening to live music in the pub!

The early seating usually appeals to families with children and those who like to retire early. With this seating, you can easily be in bed by 9:30pm, meaning that you will be well-rested for the next day.

If you are worried that you will be hungry later on, you will be able to find late-night snacks available at select venues, such as Sorrento's and Cafe Promenade.

Royal Caribbean main dining room

For passengers wanting to dine around fewer children, it is best to skip the early seating. Of course, you could be seated next to a larger family if you select the late seating; nothing is ever guaranteed!

Likewise, if you are wanting to enjoy the evening entertainment, you may find yourself sleepy after indulging in a three-course meal, especially later in the cruise. Some may prefer to see the earlier shows and eat dinner later.

Finally, the early seating tends to overlap with sail away on the first night, meaning that you will have to skip the Main Dining Room or select a later time if you want to go on embarkation day and attend all of the sail away festivities.

Note that this tends to be the most popular dining option, so if you want to dine during the first seating, make sure you book your cruise as early as possible!

Late seating

Family in dining room

The late seating commences after the early seating has concluded, and the wait staff has been able to reset all of the tables, meaning that it usually begins around 8:00pm. For many, this might be too late to eat every night; however, there are some pros to selecting this dining time!

For starters, you will not feel rushed in the afternoon. You can spend more time by the pool or exploring the ports before returning to your cabin to get ready. Those with early seating will need to ensure that their excursions end with enough time for them to freshen up for dinner, meaning that they could lose an hour or two extra in port!

Late seatings also allow for more pre-dinner activities, whether that is a drink or early show.

Food in main dining room

And often, the service is more relaxed, as the wait staff is not worried about setting up for another seating afterward.

Of course, one of the biggest cons is that you will be staying up late each evening for dinner. It is important that you take into consideration your sleep schedule. Will you want to do other things after eating? If so, will that impact your energy level the next day? You do not want to feel groggy during the day!

My Time Dining

Are you torn between early and late dining? You may want to consider My Time Dining, Royal Caribbean's flexible dining option that allows passengers to make reservations during specific hours for the Main Dining Room ahead of time or show up when they are ready to eat.

This will allow you to eat at 6:00pm one day and 8:00pm the next, if you so wish. Otherwise, you can try to dine around the same time, say 7:30pm, each night of the cruise. It is meant to be an option that allows you to schedule dinner around the rest of your onshore and onboard plans.

My Time Dining, however, is not considered traditional dining. You will not have the same table mates and wait staff each night, as you are seated wherever there is an open table. Many cruisers enjoy getting to know their servers and having them learn their preferences, which is why traditional dining is still so popular!

Early dinner vs. late dinner on Royal Caribbean: Which is best for you?

Symphony of the Seas main dining room

The early seating is best for families with younger children or those who want to retire to their cabin earlier in the evening. Likewise, it is also the preferred seating for those who enjoy evening entertainment, as you will be finished with your meal by the time the ship is livening up!

On the other hand, if you prioritize daytime activities, whether that be excursions or lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand, you will enjoy having time in the evening to get ready, instead of having to cut the afternoon short.

This option will also enable you to attend sail away without compromising on the Main Dining Room experience on embarkation day.

Main dining room

There is always My Time Dining, too, if you are unable to make up your mind. Just note that your overall dining experience will be a little bit different than if you selected a traditional seating-- you will neither be seated at the same table each evening nor have the same wait staff.

My Time Dining also requires you to plan ahead a little bit, as you could be faced with lengthy wait times if you fail to make reservations ahead of time!

Do not forget that you do not have to eat in the Main Dining Room every night, either. You can always forego the lengthy meal and head up for a quick bite at the Windjammer or opt to indulge in a more intimate specialty dining experience one night!

Both of these options, so long as you make your specialty reservation ahead of time, will provide you with more flexibility in regard to dining time.

What does the policy protect?

Symphony of the Seas docked at CocoCay

There are three primary components of the travel plan.

The first is the Cancellation Penalty Waiver, which allows guests to cancel their vacation for specified reasons. It also includes a "Cancel for Any Reason Credit" that can be added for an additional cost.

The second component is comprised of the benefits of the travel insurance that is underwritten by Arch Insurance Company:

Finally, you will get worldwide emergency assistance provided by On Call International.

What does travel insurance not cover?

Royal Promenade on Adventure of the Seas

There are some things that Royal Caribbean's policy will not cover, such as Cancel for Any Reason.

This is an addition that can be purchased separately by contacting 1-888-722-2195. If you booked through a travel agent, they will be able to assist you if this is something you are interested in.

Per the policy's contract, "This additional enhancement is offered by Royal Caribbean International as a special service to guests that purchase this cruise ticket Cancellation Penalty Waiver Addendum...Credits are valid for one year from issue date, are not transferable, and have no cash value."

Sail away on Oasis of the Seas

"To be eligible for the credits: 1. The travel protection plan must be purchased prior to having made final payment for the cruise; and 2. Notification of cancellation must be given to Royal Caribbean International prior to the ship's departure."

"Once you’ve cancelled with Royal Caribbean International, please contact the Royal Caribbean Travel Protection Program Help Line at 1-800-453-4022 or 1-516-342- 7262 regarding cruise credits. Please note that AIR2SEA components are not subject to this cruise credit feature."

Additionally, the insurance policy will not reimburse you for inclement weather or cancelled ports of call.

Two cruise ships docked side by side

If, for instance, you book a Western Caribbean cruise but find that the itinerary has been altered to an Eastern Caribbean one; the policy will not provide any compensation.

Also, the policy's fine print states that benefits are not payable for any loss due to, arising from, or resulting from pre-existing conditions; war, invasion, acts of foreign enemies; or being intoxicated or under the influence of any controlled substance unless taken as administered or prescribed by a physician.

If you are worried about something not being covered, you should read the fine print prior to purchasing the policy.

What happens if I have already paid for insurance?

Women on pool deck

If you have already added travel insurance to your booking, you will not be required to pay the difference in pricing.

That is, however, unless a certain event triggers a change. This could be a change in ship or sailing date, the addition of a promotion, or when the booking moves from offered to booked status, among other events.

Why should you consider travel insurance for your next cruise?

Travel insurance is not included in the cost of your cruise fare, meaning that you will need to factor it into your cruise budget.

The purpose of insurance is meant to provide peace of mind in the unlikely event that an unexpected event occurs before, during, or after your trip and protects you against any major financial losses.

Let's say that you booked your flight for the day before the cruise was scheduled to depart. Unfortunately, it was cancelled, and the airline was unable to rebook you on another flight that would guarantee an on-time arrival.

Guest and crew member on FlowRider

The insurance plan would help cover some of the associated costs of rebooking and/or meeting up with the ship at the first port of call.

Additionally, many passengers partake in active activities while on a cruise, whether they are onboard or ashore. Active activities come with a risk, and you can never predict if you will need medical attentional due to an accident.

Note that those residing in New York are ineligible for Royal Caribbean's insurance during booking. A policy can be added after the fact through travelcruisecare.com. This applies to Celebrity sailings, too.

Do not worry, though-- you will still be able to enjoy a selection of complimentary sandwiches, ready-made salads, coffee, and more at any hour; it will also be open 24-hours.

Pearl Café will have cozy nooks that offer specular ocean views, making it a great place to meet up with friends and family before dinner or catch up on your favorite book.

Sorrento's

At Sorrento's you can grab a slice of your favorite signature pizza, or indulge in a specialty one. You will have to act fast, though, as the flavor of the specialty pie will change every day!

And for the first time, you can pair your pizza with your favorite draft beer on tap.

Park Café

Like on Oasis Class ships, Park Café will be located in Central Park and serve breakfast and lunch. On Icon, however, Park Café will be open in the evening from 5:30pm to 10:00pm for late night bites.

El Loco Fresh

Steps away from the Cove Pool is El Loco Fresh, the grab-and-go spot for Mexican food onboard. It will be open daily from 11:00am to 7:00pm.

Coastal Kitchen

Coastal Kitchen is the complimentary dining room for suite guests. Star and Sky passengers are able to dine here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while Sea passengers can only eat here for dinner based on availability.

The two-level restaurant will be able to seat 154 guests and offers views straight into the AquaDome!

The Grove

Available only to Star and Sky suite guests, the Grove is an al fresco buffet that serves Mediterranean cuisine. It is smaller than Coastal Kitchen, with a capacity of 38 passengers.
